better yet, use firefox plugin(s) and within a click of a button - download the videos.

my favorite extension for video download is download helper

I use a firefox add on/plugin called "video downloader". Most times it gives you 3 options for the file type you would like to download it as. Flv is good but you need to download the player to view the videos. The .avi option is one that i have never been able to get to play. I'm not sure what codec it is. I've tried it in premiere pro, ulead mediastudio pro and even windows movie maker  so i don't use that option. The other one is .mp4 which is played in Apples quicktime player.
To convert them for watching on a dvd player then a good free converter is one called "Super". It will convert just about any file you want (except that bloody .avi file :D ) . On some conversions the sound may get out of sink with the audio.
One other thing, encoding/recoding videos can take a long time and needs a fast computer to do it. Your best bet is to start the encode and go out for the day.

If you have a laptop or your computer is close to your tv then you may want to think about connecting your computer/laptop upto your tv and playing them straight off your hard driver to friends when they come over.

Tickles.

Does anybody know if there is something like this, a toolbar option, for Safari? (I find it more stable than firefox)

a free .flv player
http://www.download.com/FLV-Player/3000-2139_4-10467081.html

a free encoder to change .flv files to mpg or avi
http://www.rivavx.com/?encoder
just change destination file from name.flv to name.mpg and press encode you can change it to name.avi but does not always work, anyway most dvd players will play .mpg files on a data disc dvd or cd with out make an dvd movie disc up.
