AMIDST THE ECONOMIC turmoil, French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, is having his own personal financial crisis, as thieves got their paws on his online banking passwords and proceeded to siphon off cash.

Sarkozy was certainly not taking a laissez faire attitude after noticing that several apparently smallish sums of his fric were disappearing from his account and called in the police.

French secretary of state for consumer affairs, Luc Chatel, told French radio, "the swindlers will be punished". You can bank on it.

Chatel also spluttered that something had to be done to tighten internet banking security in France, which, according to the French crime agency, has apparently seen a nine per cent rise in attacks this year.

An AFP source, clued in to the inquiry, reckoned the thieves pirating Sarkozy’s account probably "did not know that it was the president's account".

"This was a classic case of data piracy, likely by one or several low-level swindlers, " he said.

"When one gives personal information to one's bank, it is not so the information is used for marketing or recruiting purposes, or that it should be divulged here or there," Chatel indignantly fumed. µ
