No he isnt.
But at least he is not as bad as the totally dire Ricky Gervais.
A real comedian is Al Murray, Jack Dee, Lee Mack, Jon Stewart, Bill Hicks, or this geezer:

I find Peter Kays stand up to be very tame but "Peter Kays Pheonix Nights" now that is funny! And Max and Paddy's road to nowhere has its moments.

IMO Lee Evans is the king of stand up, Omid Djalili and Dylan Moran are good too.

I think the early stuff is hilarious, top of the tower was genius, that peter kay thing was funny, pheonix nights, max and paddy brilliant observational comedy
saw him live on the mum wants a bungalow tour, to be honest not as funny, kept repeating the old material
IMO the show I saw the other night was total car crash TV, absolute dross, didnt laugh once, almost as anoying as the real talent shows
:mad::confused::mad::(
I think the office and extras were brill but dont find ricky gervais's stand up act funny in the slightest
I like Lee Evans, Harry Hill,Bill Bailey, that tall Geordie Guy with the long hair (sorry) used to like Billy Connelly till he turned into a stuck up self important tw@

peter kay is to safe, repeats all his jokes over and over again and conned all the other writers out of the rights to phoenix nights. he is a fat, conning unfunny purple headed yoghurt squirter! didn't watch his new show just judging by the title could tell it was unfunny and just plain stupid.
i like comedians who take risks and are not PC, like ricky gervais. i find the only people that don't like him are fat, cos he does make a few jokes about fat people. don't mean to insult anyone, i'm sure there are plenty of slim people who don't like him, that's just what i've observed.
little britain - risky to the point of offensive- very funny
bill hicks- plenty of risks and funny.
oddly tho, not a fan of chubby brown- too risky for my sensitive little brain and too many peodo jokes
haven't seen any recent billy connolly but love the stuff i have seen
funniest ever stand up is kevin turvey :D

Lee Evans and Billy Connelly are my favourite British comedians, Billy builds into his jokes like storys which he usually spins out into other storys sometimes even forgetting the orginal joke, he is incredible, probably the best ad libber of all time.
The funny thing is, most of his act is made up on the night, he has said to his wife he doesnt have a clue what hes going to talk about untill he gets on stage, then it all just flows out, hes just a naturally good storyteller, and knows how to put humour into them, hes not really a comedian in the normal sense, hes something different.
Lee Evans is the opposite, the laughs come from nowhere, very quickly and from a bizzare angle usually that is very unexpected and inredibly amusing, very good at using effects and props as well, he plays a kind of comic lovable fool/genius, unlike Connolly he writes his jokes and acts out before hand, practices them for hours with help from other writers before he goes on tour, and has sold out Wembley, the only comedian ever to do so.
Where as Billy, a great observer of people and life, simply remembers all the amusing things that he sees and hears, and then makes all the jokes up from that, which he incredibly does live.
Both men are comic genius, and I cant pick which one I like best, I dont think I ever will.

Peter Kay was funny until last weekend. I predict he has killed his career from that dire crap he thought was entertainment.
Gervais is one of the best comedians.
Lee Evans is good to watch after a few spliffs & Dylan Moran cracks me right up!!
One of the best comedy stand ups I have ever seen is Richard Pryor!!

I think Peter Kay's stand up is hilarious...mainly because he's about the same age as me and his childhood must of been just like mine so when he talks about his mum doing full housework at 3 am before they go on holiday cos she doesnt wanna come back to a dirty house, or buying crap pop that noone likes I die laughing.
I always thought Ricky Gervais was genius..then I saw his last stand up and although I really wanted to..I didnt laugh once.

He's reasonably funny. Phoenix Nights and Max and Paddy are both excellent. His stand-ups are decent but he repeats the same material over and over again. His recent show was garbage, but with him being worth over £10million, I doubt he gives a rats arse.

As a stand-up, Peter Kay is genuine lowest common denominator stuff - not in a 'scummy' way, I don't mean that, but just in his really bland, inoffensive, fun-for-all-the-family comedy kind of way. It's aimed primarily at people who don't really know much comedy. Nothing wrong with that, and he is OK, but he's hardly a master of the art.
His TV shows are much better, mind, but they don't match up to The Office or Curb Your Enthusiasm, as two examples.
However nothing, NOTHING, will ever top Catherine Tate for the 'lowest common denominator' accolade. She is genuinely ATROCIOUS. The fact she had a popular TV show is indicative of just how easy it is to entertain the mindless masses these days.
I agree with Zarah about Gervais though - The Office is genius on many, many levels, but he's failed to hit those heights since then. His stand-up shows are fairly good, but nothing more. Likewise with Extras.

His first two stand-up DVDs and Phoenix Nights were funny. I haven't found him anywhere near as funny since.

his stand up - abysmal - if it was anyone else he'd be booed off stage

The differences in England between people from different areas are just astounding, for such a small country.
Whereas in Australia its the opposite, huge country, but everyone is the same, with a few slight variations that are mostly barely noticable.

I despair at the state of British comedy. Jack Dee? Gimme a break! Al Murray? Gervais? Izzard? Kay? Connolly?
You people really think these bores are funny?
There has not been a British comedian with wit and intelligence since Peter Cook.
American humour is so much sharper and smarter. We are decades behind them.
Hicks, Seinfeld, George Carlin...now that guy was funny...Lenny Bruce, any of the Saturday Night Live crowd, even Bob Hope was streets ahead of any of the Brits mentioned above.
As for that Iranian dullard! A previous poster got it right. How long can you go on trying to be funny about your ethnic status? Same with the female muslim "comic".

Hmmmmmmm. Not sure that is true.

George Carlin was fantastic. But lets be honest for a moment, there are plenty of American stand up comics and sitcoms that are not remotely funny. The sitcoms over there are vehicles for moral comment where celebs like William Shatner strut on and a receive a big Whooooooooo yeaaahhhhh from the audience.
Our sitcoms are even worse these days - lame, predictable and without humour or wit of any kind.
But on a happier note, both us British and you Americans can thank God that we're not exposed to German comedy.
