I think i asked this in a previous thread.
but what single piece music really, really seems to touch you in a personal unique way, summat that touches your soul and makes you feel like crying.
I got a muted response last time, let it go people, what does it for you?
My personal fave is Brian enos..An ending(Ascent)....so melancholy, but oh so beautiful too.

Music doesn't make me cry unless I'm watching a movie. For example, I just watched The Fast Runner about the Inuit eskimo's, and the music was amazing and made me cry.
Although I really love music, I can't say it has any particular purpose other than to pass the time. However, my personal favorites are the Blade Runner soundtrack, Stars of the Lid, Woob 1194 and ummm... well, I'm just getting into ambient. I hear Eno all the time on Drone Zone, and from what I remember he's realy good.

The greatest piece of music ever written is Beethoven's 9th Symphony. I hate the EU for adopting it's major theme as its anthem. There is lots of music I love but everytime I hear this piece it just blows me away.

Music is one of the greatest experiences known to man, it can draw countless emotions from inside, when I connect with a piece of music it can me cry - in different ways, tears of happiness, nostalgia, empathy etc).
It can also banish apathy and make me spring into action.
and just looking at the cd cover can send shivers up my spine.
That scene from V for Vendetta when Evie is in the prison cell reading the letter, the music that scene has whilst she's tellin her story is nothing short of cosmic and gets me every time.
Year Zero (last track on the album of same title) is tearing me to shreds at the moment.
Yep music is an excellent life enhancing tool when you connect with it.
My favorite music changes all the time, a few of my personal favourites that come back time and again are:
The Sisters of Mercy (everything, but especially FLOODLAND and EMMA)
Pink Floyd - Darkside of the Moon (a popular choice!)
Roger Waters - 'Perfect Sense' from 'Amused to Death
Requiem for a Dream - Michael Dansel (think thats who made it, only just got it yesterday and I can't be arsed to move from the settee :) )
The Beloved - Lets come together
David Bowie - Station to Station the song
ah hem...The Butthole Surfers - everything
the list goes on and on...
enjoy,

Nice thread jinjo.
I personally couldn't imagine life without music, it's a majorly important aspect for me. I love going to gigs & have music on most of the time.
I'd find it hard to pin down a favourite song as I have so many. It all depends on what frame of mind I'm in, I have quite a varied taste & just go with wherever the mood takes me at that particular time...
I'm actually quite absorbed in the new Linkin Park album at the mo, but that's just cos it's new & very catchy!!:) Had a massive Pink Floyd revival last week after the Roger Waters gig. But I love all sorts from rock, goth, folk, indie, tribal, trance, classical, relaxation, soundtracks, girly mushy stuff & allsorts really LOL!!:D

Anyone here heard of Beggars Opera?
They were a progressive rock band in the early 70's. Their music is absolutely fantastic. They took old classical music, then played it with modern instruments. I'll provide a link later with their best album.

My all time favorite is Pink Floyd, and this piece of music (especially from about 3 minutes in) moves me so deeply. It transports me into another world...
http://www.globalfailure.com/images/Pink_Floyd_Wish_You_Were_Here.jpg
Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

In the deepest sense, ask yourself why you listen to music. It makes you feel good right? You said it defines you. But does it define the real you, or the "space suit" that is your human mind/body? It seems the real you --the real us if you will-- is not something you can define, it just is. You can call it God. Therefore, music and movies and all this stuff is simply just that; stuff, which defines a false self.
We do these things and anything because we're affraid not to do anything. Motion and seeking and learning and doing create the illusion of progress. The illusion of motion is the illusion of thinking you're going somewhere, and that something is happening. In fact, nothing is happening. Yes, there is the illusion, the Matrix, which is happening, but in the deepest sense there is nothing to do, and no reason to do it. Therefore the Matrix is purposeless. It's only purpose is to sustain it's purposelessness, which is purposeless.
When I did shrooms a couple times --I hate mushrooms BTW, and will never do them again-- I got into this state where I saw everything for what it was. I was watching people going back and forth from a supermarket. Everyone was doing something, often times looking stressed and hectic. But I saw that they weren't really accomplishing anything. Sure, they were feeding the family and all that, but it's all a big sick joke! It was scary how true it was--how these people do things and not a single one of them knows why they do things, they just do!
It's so difficult to explain. It made me sick and sad, and above all, there was a huge feeling of hopelessness and dread, and I felt naked seeing the world in this way. The scariest part was the foundation which it is all placed on, the canvas if you will. I felt like the Matrix was what David Icke describes it to be, and the underlaying foundation is like a cold nothingness. There's something inherently evil about the Matrix, or at least it is the very definition of cold.

I love music. I have listened to music that has touched me, in particular I love Jazz and blues. One album I cannot get enough of is Victor Wooten double Cd set 'Yin' and 'Yang'.
But to state that music defines a person I feel may be stretching it a bit far.
I agree with cleft that music is a time passer and can deter you for a brief time away from other things. it can raise your vibration and make you feel good and certain music can make you feel sad or touched in some way. But again this is just a temporary fix of feelings and emotions. to become reliant on this to sustain yourself is to me like any other addiction which provokes emotions and feelings which are purely brain chemicals. A drug maybe. A temporary side track from reality.
But....we all must do what makes us feel good I guess or what the fuck else is the point? maybe there isn't actually a point, and that in fact is the point

Brilliant thread, Cleft & Purps on ya guys:D I like most people enjoy music, but it does not define who I am. Music along with smell are directly connected with memory and emotions, thats why a piece of music that you like will take you back to the first time you heard it & will also give you the emotional hit that you had originally.
It is important to be aware that the PTB now own most of the recording and production companies in the world and a lot of popular music is under there control, and knowing how the memory/emotional response works they are in an ideal postion to manipulate the masses without them knowing.
I'm not saying don't listen, because we all need an emotional lift or rest or whatever from time to time, but be aware that things may not be what they seem. Music is extremely powerful at raising emotional responses, be carefull what your responding to.
http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/feat/archives/2007/01/01/2003342873
Observing 13 subjects who listened to classical music while in an MRI machine, the scientists found a cascade of brain-chemical activity. First the music triggered the forebrain, as it analyzed the structure and meaning of the tune. Then the nucleus accumbus and ventral tegmental area activated to release dopamine, a chemical that triggers the brain's sense of reward.
The cerebellum, an area normally associated with physical movement, reacted too, responding to what Levitin suspected was the brain's predictions of where the song was going to go. As the brain internalizes the tempo, rhythm and emotional peaks of a song, the cerebellum begins reacting every time the song produces tension (that is, subtle deviations from its normal melody or tempo).

"I'll be" by Edwin Mccain absolutely slays me everytime
Here it is :)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=f0hvOdYVTG0
Lyrics by Edwin Mcain:
The strands in your eyes that color them wonderfull
Stop me and steal my breath
Emeralds from mountains thrust towards the sky
Never revealing their depth
Tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated, I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above
And I'll be your crying shoulder
I'll be loves suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
Rain falls angry on the tin roof
As we lie awake in my bed
You're my survival, you're my living proof
My love is alive not dead
Tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated, I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above
And I'll be your crying shoulder
I'll be loves suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
And I've dropped out, burned up, fought my way back from the dead
Tuned in, turned on, remembered the thing that you said
And I'll be your crying shoulder
I'll be loves suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your
I'll be your crying shoulder
I'll be loves suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
The greatest fan of your life

All music touches me, sometimes I dont like the feel of some music, but more often than not it is a learning experience, even when listening to tracks or music I have heard many times for many years. Hi Cleft hmmmmm treble or bass, ;) My real me, is really aware of the music, (from whatever source) not the space suit me, that was defined as human mind and body, because I am not sure that is a correct definition, I am sure my body helps me greatly with the music, but are you suggesting my mind on its own wouldn't hear the music, wouldn't be touched by it, or defined by it...
We do these things and anything because we're affraid not to do anything.
Motion and seeking and learning and doing create the illusion of progress. The illusion of motion is the illusion of thinking you're going somewhere, and that something is happening. It was scary how true it was--how these people do things and not a single one of them knows why they do things, they just do!
Seeing everything for what it is, is one of the first real things you become aware of after having shrooms. Learning to use that skill, completely, lasts for the rest of your being.
It's so difficult to explain. It made me sick and sad, and above all, there was a huge feeling of hopelessness and dread, and I felt naked seeing the world in this way. I really must study more..... If all those people you spoke of were truly unaware as you say, the feelings of hopelessness and dread, and nakedness, were yours and yours alone, 'look' for the ever present music and let that define you rather than the feelings of hopelessness and dread, and nakedness, Everyone (that has experienced them) gets to a stage when they know they dont need shrooms anymore. you can get much higher than that, with vibrations and waves.

Actually shodan, until a few months ago i didnt even know who Brian eno was!
Which surprised me cos hes seemingly been going since time began, even more surprising is that i found out that he was a member of Roxy music, who were massive when i was a teenager.
Anyway, over many years, ive kept hearing this particular tune on TV adverts, films, documentaries etc.
It just melted my heart every time i heard it,so i did some researching and it turned out to be the gloriousy beautiful, melancholic An ending(ascent).
I bought the APOLLO cd on the strenght of it..Deep blueday is great too,it was used on the film Trainspotting.
The rest of the album is good too,but does sound Country n western...
which i dont like much.
can you recommend any other good Eno music?

Just read this post. Great stuff there mate. Like a hampster in his wheel. Going through the motion of running but ultimately not going anywhere or doing anything. Just running and running and running....
I try to live in the moment of now whenever i can. Problem with this is i don't tend to think much about the future and hence don't accomplish much...no goals or flags in the ground and all that. Just being.
People spend too much time trying to 'go' somewhere or 'be something' when in fact all we are, or need to be is right here and right now. It's all we have.
I do wish i had some sort of ambition (but i suppose it's because everyone is playing a game i want no part of) though as i tend to feel a little worthless at times....but then again, what is the point anyways eh?
Meh!

I know I've said this before, but to me music is all about resonating frequencies and whether they lift you beyond the here and now.
Have a listen and see if this one resonates with you.

I am mainly into uplifting house, uplifting trance/techno and Old Skool Rave music.
BUT
This track hit the charts in 1988 and went to number 1 for quite a while, and i think it is one of the most uplifting chart/pop songs i have ever heard..it is totally not any of the above styles of music, in fact it is a VERY simple tune but very uplifting.
It's called "Don't Worry....Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin 1988
