View Full Version : Cannabis smokers face tougher penalties uk

People caught possessing cannabis for a second time will be given an £80 fine instead of a warning, the Home Office has confirmed. The move comes as the government launched a robust defence of its decision to reclassify the drug back to class B.

"While cannabis has always been illegal, reclassifying it to a class B drug reinforces our message to everyone that it is harmful and should not be taken," said home secretary Jacqui Smith.

"Fewer people are taking cannabis, but it is crucial that this trend continues."

That claim was rubbished by drug reform groups who point to advice from the government's own scientific advisory council calling for the drug to be left at class C.

"Cannabis use was falling when the government dismissed the advice of its appointed experts and decided to reclassify cannabis to class B and use has continued to fall," Danny Kushlick, Transform's head of policy, told politics.co.uk

"It's latest announcement to increase penalties is yet more populist posturing that flies in the face of the science and evidence that harsher penalties are no deterrent to users."

Cannabis possession was decriminalised by former home secretary David Blunkett in 2004, making it a largely non-arrestable offence.

The reclassification of cannabis will take place on January 26th 2009.

Here in Seattle the police went to the gov't to make weed the lowest priority of all their laws. here in Seattle you can pretty much smoke where ever, but because I am from back east I don't just smoke everywhere. Unfortunately because of the WTO riots, the police in Seattle have a bad name, but most of those cops involved were not local Seattle police at all. Out of all the places I have lived and been too, the Seattle cops are the least fascist of them all. But like I said there are other police here in WA that are not so nice.

BUT now what they do is concentrate all their energy on is busting the big time growers and sellers. Over the past few years many, many, many huge grow operations have been busted which effects us smokers and for the past 2 years the weed has not been as good and harder to find because of it. Either way until they legalize it, all of us smokers will suffer.

ok so in order for you to overdose on cannabis, you would have to smoke 1500 pounds of the plant within 15 minutes, I read that somewhere. Also you can smoke cannabis your whole life and not get cancer but if you smoke cigarettes, you may get cancer as for cannabis is not carcinogenic as cigarettes. I would much rather smoke cannabis than smoke cigarettes or drink beer or any other type of drug but since it is illegal, I don't do it. Hopefully in heaven marijuana will be there and we can smoke all we want.

well said!

I believe that one of the reasons that pot is illegal is because it wakes you up to a higher knowledge that those in power want to keep for themselves. If there was not some other hidden reason like that for keeping weed illegal, then they would legalize it because of the money they could make off of the taxes. There is definitely a conspiracy when it comes to weed.

Why criminalising industrial hemp is criminal

Cannabis, Hemp, Marijuana, seeds

The cannabis plant is being rediscovered for it environmental friendly applicability. As you might know hemp is one of the oldest crops domesticated by man. The history of cultivating hemp goes back for thousands of years. Cannabis cultivation appears to have evolved simultaneously in separate civilisations across Eurasia.

Humankind’s earliest utilisation of cannabis was most likely in eating the seeds of the plant. Hemp seeds are among the most healthiest of grains on this planet. These seeds are low in saturated fats and full of high quality protein.

Hemp is one of the most valuable and versatile resources known to man. The manifold advantages of fibre hemp as a primary agricultural resource are apparent from the very outset of cultivation. Apart from hemp’s natural resilience, the fibre for which the plant is prized for is not a viable food source for pests. Therefore, industrial cannabis requires no insecticides. Hemp outgrows any competing plant which removes the need for herbicides, and even weeding.

Furthermore, the fibre hemp root system is highly beneficial to the structure of the soil in which it grows. Hemp requires no artificial fertilisers and, vitally does not deplenish its soil of essential nutrients in the way of many cash crops (such as cotton, corn and tobacco which can ruin for decades the land upon which they grow). This is due in part to the outstanding self-composting properties of hemp.

The stalk of the hemp plant produces one of the world’s strongest natural fibres and can be used to make things like rope, textile and paper. Hemp pulp is by far the most efficient, rational choice for paper production. Hemp also competes with the other fast growing plants that are presently a resource for pulp.

Most of these products can be recycled several times. For example, after being used, hemp textiles can be processed into paper; paper converted into building material which on its turn may ultimately be used as an energy source. Also the seed of the hemp plant contains high grade food oil that can be used as a bio-fuel and in the manufacturing of paint and soap.

Equally important is that in the treatment and processing of hemp fibres, wood and seeds, no chemicals are necessary – only mechanical methods and natural decomposition. Therefore, hemp does not only benefit the environment, but also human beings, animals and plants because the final products do not contain any harmful chemical residues.

These are just a few of the solutions offered by hemp to the various environmental problems faced today. The qualities that made cannabis one of our ancestors’ most useful and valuable resources are no less important in the 21st century. Considering the sorry state of our planet’s ecosystem and endless political turmoil over the control of finite, fossil-based energy resources, we might conclude that hemp is of even greater importance to us than to our forbears.

Dismissing these arguments just because of the fact that cannabis is an illegal substance is not only short-sighted but flat-out criminal.

Do you save your pennies by growing your own? :D An old pal of mine I shared a house with used to do that in his attic and him and his brother would spend hours at a time getting stoned on it :D

And why not grow your own baccy too? Least that way you won`t get any poisons put into it ;)

Do you smoke marijuana?

Then you are in good company!

From the WikiPedia article on physicist Richard Feynman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_feynman#Personal_life)

According to Genius, the James Gleick biography, Feynman experimented with LSD during his professorship at Caltech. Somewhat embarrassed by his actions, Feynman sidestepped the issue when dictating his anecdotes; consequently, the "Altered States" chapter in Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! describes only marijuana and ketamine experiences at John Lilly's famed sensory deprivation tanks, as a way of studying consciousness. Feynman gave up alcohol when he began to show early signs of alcoholism, as he did not want to do anything that could damage his brain.

Very good company!

From the WikiPedia article on Carl Sagan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_sagan#Personal_life_and_beliefs)

Sagan was a user of marijuana. Under the pseudonym "Mr. X", he wrote an essay concerning cannabis smoking in the 1971 book Marihuana Reconsidered, written by Sagan's close friend Lester Grinspoon. In his essay, Sagan wrote how marijuana use had helped to inspire some of his works and enhance sensual and intellectual experiences. After Sagan's death, Grinspoon disclosed this to Sagan's biographer, Keay Davidson. The publishing of this biography, Carl Sagan: A Life, in 1999, brought much media attention to the issue of the use and legalization of marijuana.

Ah fuck that. Who cares about laws as long as you don't get caught. Let your moral compass guide you. Treat others how you'd like to be treated and what else do you need? Some guy tells you that you cannot have a plant? Why should you listen to authority? What the hell have they done for you?
Fuck laws.
Be a good person.
Smoke it, grow it, share it.
