I'm in Pluckley, Kent and wow what a difference an hour makes, all that evil cloud has peeled back and given a spectacularly clear sky and full moon to die for. Stars all in their relevant places, not a lot happening, it seems really calm, without any noise, it's quite beautiful in fact.

I took some photos, but looking at them now, not a great deal to see. Lots of orbs though (or is it dust particles? Lens flare? :D) so who knows.

I feel this is the calm before the storm.

"The Hunter's Moon, Jupiter The King
And UFO Alert!"


Horkheimer: Greetings, greetings fellow star gazers. And have we ever got four goodies for you. A magnificent Hunter's Moon, Jupiter still high and bright in early evening, Mercury has its best morning appearance of the year and the planet that's always mistaken for a UFO returns. Let me show you.
O.K., we've got our skies set up for any night this week and next 45 minutes after sunset looking west where just above the horizon you'll see what looks like the bright landing light of an oncoming airplane or a UFO. And each night throughout October just after sunset it will be a bit higher in the sky. It's not a UFO of course but whenever this planet returns to evening skies as it is now people always claim there is a UFO in their front or back yard. It is of course the most brilliant planet of them all, same size as our planet Earth, 8,000 mile wide Venus. Venus is the brightest planet. But if you look over to its left to the south in early evening you will see the second brightest planet. It is the king of them all 88,000 mile wide Jupiter which means we could line up eleven 8,000 mile wide Venuses or Earths across its middle. So you have two wonderful planets for early evening viewing all month long.
But if you look toward the east just after sunset next Tuesday night the 14th you'll be greeted by an exquisite Hunter's Moon just rising. And as you regular viewers know my two favorite full Moons of the year are the full Moon of September the Harvest Moon and the full Moon of October the Hunter's Moon because they always remind me of giant golden jack o'lantern pumpkins as they rise and set. But do you remember why this full Moon is called the Hunter's Moon? Well traditionally this is the first full Moon after the Harvest Moon. And since the fields were harvested one month earlier hunters could ride out after sunset through the harvested fields by the light of this Moon and catch small animals that had come out to glean the fields. So please don't miss Tuesday night's super beautiful, super colorful, super romantic Hunter's Moon.
And now that we've got all of you early evening cosmos watchers covered what's left for you early birds to see? Well just keep facing east and during the last half of this month the smallest and closest planet to the sun, also known as the pink planet, will have its best morning appearance of 2008. Start looking about 45 minutes before sunrise next week and you'll see tiny 3,000 mile wide Mercury just above the horizon. And if you watch morning after morning it will continue to get higher and brighter and on the morning of the 26th will make an exquisite picture with an old waning crescent Moon. Plus on the 27th you may be able to see an even skinnier crescent Moon just below and to the right of Mercury in the early morning twilight.
So there you have it, Mercury at its morning best for 2008, a jack o'lantern pumpkin colored harvest Moon next Tuesday night the 14th, the king of the planets in the south in early evening and the UFO planet Venus in the west just after sunset. What a plate full of cosmic goodies from which you are free to partake

Not piss taking here. But here is a lesson in taking pictures with a camcorder, in the dark. Then a digital camera, in the dark.

With a camcorder, you will get grain unless you go manual.

1) You put it on a tripod. Turn the switches to manual.
2) Turn the gain button right down.
3) Zoom in and focus on a cloud or the moon if there and lock the focus. Turn of the digital zoom. Use software later to zoom in. Your pc has better software than your tiny, even expensive, camera.
4) Open the iris fully. Lowest F-number there is. If you zoom in it might change depending on your camera type. This will allow most light in. It also lowers the depth of field, but dont worry with these distances involved. With the focus locked it wont matter.
5) Go into the menu and set the 'shutter speed' to 3 frames a sec. This gives a judery image but is best for getting a dark image on the ccd.
6) go 'wide angle'.
7) Raise the gain at single points untill you get an image that is bright but not too grainy. You decide the target against this. If it is illuminated then lower it again and remove the 'grainy' images, if not illuminated but is pinpointed with spots of lights then open it to reveil the 'body' of the thing.

Note that you might want to raise the 'shutter speed' to 6 or 12 frames a sec if it is a bright night. This helps as it reduces the juddery images.


For a stills camera. If it uses film stock then you already know about long exposures so I wont teach youto suck an egg.

But for those with a digital stills camera it goes like this.

1) A tripod or lean against a post. You will never learn to hold your breath and stablise yourself for the amount of time you need.
2) Go manual.
3) Zoom in and focus on the moon or bright distant object and lock the focus. This could be a lamp in the far distance or the distant hills against the sky. Turn off the digital zoom.
4) Turn off the flash.
5) This is where the differing cameras make it hard to tell you exactly how to do it, so I will generalise. Read the rest with that that is typed in above for the camcorder in mind.
6) Set your F-number to lowest. It will go up again when and if you zoom in. The F-number is the Iris. The lower the number, the more light hits your ccd (chip). When you zoom in, you lower the light hitting the lenses due to the crap inside the zooming section of the camera. So dont forget to look and open it again to a lower F-number if you can.
7) Set the gain to the lowest. On some cameras this might be by lowering the ASA number on the menue. This ASA or ISO number is what is used to describe the film stock speed. The higher the number, the more grain and the more light it collects at any one time. The lower the ISO number, the more time the shutter has to be left open, but the 'crisper' the image. Your camera uses these 'numbers' as a guide as to what that function does. With a low number set by you, it will reduce the grain in the image and keep the shutter open longer. Tripod folks or post.



Try it and see.
