£1 billion is in overseas banks in Iceland, so obviously we are paying too much council tax. So , we now want a reduction in Council Tax and a rebate of the money they have stolen and not returned by way of service provision. Plus compensation to those who have suffered from their decisions. Local councils and public services are renowned for being less than honest about their finances.

I bet this is the tip of the iceberge..... How many other bank acounts have they all got, with OUR money stashed away in them?

Apparently this was at the "advice" given to them by..... John Prescot. When he was Dep PM. The whole thing stinks of a Common Purpose plan to me.

Dont forget Common Purpose came from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

Yes I can confirm that the LA's have this money in long term investments. they also have it all over the place. So Iceland was not all of the money which they hold in reserve! Obviously we expect them to have some quick access cash for day to day affairs and meeting the bills, paying wages and contracts etc. But having money invested in 3 and 5 year bonds!?! This could of course all be a clever ruse by the PM to give back everyone loads of cash just before the next election. Labour did it with working families tax credits when they first came in a few years ago. These guys have loads of different schemes all feeding off of each other. They manipulate us so well.

LA's should of purchased the gold reserve from the government with any spare cash, as well as buying up property in other areas of the UK. This reserve of property could of been let out on a short term basis to the key workers who are on a 'low' income. Who after working for x number of years would of earned the right to buy the property directly from the LA without the need for a mortgage. With them only being able to sell/give the property back to the LA's for other key workers to live in. The gold reserve could of been centrally held and then this could of been the basis for a form of gold backed currency. As the gold would be held for all LA's in the UK. No one area would have the position or wealth to manipulate the system to their own good. Immediately LA's should be able to purchase all of the empty and excess housing stock with this excess cash. Ending the homeless problem in one fell swoop. This would kick start the economy leading to increased employment and consumer activity. Or we can let the casino go bust and see what happens

Could it be that councils - rightly or wrongly investing OUR hard earned money -were specifically advised to put money into Iceland banks in order to create this 'stand off'????

QUESTION: If UK councils have invested such huge amounts of 'surplus' cash (i.e. OUR money) in foreign banks, then surely there is some sort of legal case that the people (i.e. council tax payers) can bring against their local councils for dishonesty, fraud, deception, and failure to disclose and publicly account for this cash etc., and for not ploughing all that surplus cash back into local public services and community programs. How long has this been going on for?

Secondly, no one has mentioned the huge amount of credit INTEREST that has been gained on these huge sums of money invested abroad. It's obviously kept very quiet, but it's a certainty that the interest is definately being 'skimmed off' by someone. As the original sum is still there in the bank, the council doesn't come under any sort of scrutiny. So WHO is benefitting from all the credit interest gained on OUR money sitting in these foreign banks? And into who's pockets is all that interest going?

These people need to be exposed and brought to trial.

This would have been the sensible thing to do. But ofcourse the Labour government is far from sensible. All these councils claim they were advised by John Prescott to do this. so there is clearly a coordinated agenda going on.
Police forces, councils, Transport for London, probably NHS trusts as well.
They cant have all poured our money into this black hole without there being a plan.

It was disclosed today that UK councils may have as much as £8billion of our money in their accounts abroad. Scum!

Common purpose leader Jeremy Beecham says council tax will increase to replace the money.

THE North East faces cuts in public services or higher taxes after councils and Northumbria Police invested more than £43m in crumbling Icelandic banks.

And councils may have to sell assets to pay for losses after it emerged £23m of Northumberland County Council’s money is at risk – sparking warnings that the switch to unitary authority status could be threatened.

Icelandic banks hit by global economic turmoil have also seen a £4.5m investment by council chiefs in Gateshead, along with £7m from Derwentside and £6m from Redcar and Cleveland.

Northumbria Police invested £3.5m in a bank owned by the troubled Landsbanki. Hopes of getting money back may prove difficult as Iceland slides towards bankruptcy as its banks have run out of cash.

Financial turmoil, sparked by uncertainty over banks’ bad debts, may also worsen with more institutions finding money frozen.

And the Government has rejected a guarantee against council losses after crisis talks with town hall leaders.

More than 100 councils and other public bodies nationwide have been caught up in the crisis, as campaigners branded their investments a “disgrace” and Tories estimated the value of affected assets could top £1bn.

Sir Jeremy Beecham, vice-chairman of the Local Government Association, said: “At the end of the day that money has to be replaced by increases in council tax or reduction in services.

“So there are potential implications, but it depends on the individual circumstances of local authorities.”

The Government should “stand behind” councils and provide guarantees over any losses, added the Newcastle councillor.
