A Two-Time Universe? Physicist Explores How Second
Dimension of Time Could Unify Physics Laws

For a long time, Itzhak Bars has been studying time. More than a decade ago, the USC College physicist began pondering the role time plays in the basic laws of physics — the equations describing matter, gravity and the other forces of nature.
Those laws are exquisitely accurate. Einstein mastered gravity with his theory of general relativity, and the equations of quantum theory capture every nuance of matter and other forces, from the attractive power of magnets to the subatomic glue that holds an atom’s nucleus together.
But the laws can’t be complete. Einstein’s theory of gravity and quantum theory don’t fit together. Some piece is missing in the picture puzzle of physical reality.
Bars thinks one of the missing pieces is a hidden dimension of time.
Bizarre is not a powerful enough word to describe this idea, but it is a powerful idea nevertheless. With two times, Bars believes, many of the mysteries of today’s laws of physics may disappear.
Of course, it’s not as simple as that. An extra dimension of time is not enough. You also need an additional dimension of space.
It sounds like a new episode of “The Twilight Zone,” but it’s a familiar idea to most physicists. In fact, extra dimensions of space have become a popular way of making gravity and quantum theory more compatible.
Extra space dimensions aren’t easy to imagine — in everyday life, nobody ever notices more than three. Any move you make can be described as the sum of movements in three directions — up-down, back and forth, or sideways. Similarly, any location can be described by three numbers (on Earth, latitude, longitude and altitude), corresponding to space’s three dimensions.
Other dimensions could exist, however, if they were curled up in little balls, too tiny to notice. If you moved through one of those dimensions, you’d get back to where you started so fast you’d never realize that you had moved.
“An extra dimension of space could really be there, it’s just so small that we don’t see it,” said Bars, a professor of physics and astronomy.
Something as tiny as a subatomic particle, though, might detect the presence of extra dimensions. In fact, Bars said, certain properties of matter’s basic particles, such as electric charge, may have something to do with how those particles interact with tiny invisible dimensions of space.
In this view, the Big Bang that started the baby universe growing 14 billion years ago blew up only three of space’s dimensions, leaving the rest tiny. Many theorists today believe that 6 or 7 such unseen dimensions await discovery.
Only a few, though, believe that more than one dimension of time exists. Bars pioneered efforts to discern how a second dimension of time could help physicists better explain nature.
“Itzhak Bars has a long history of finding new mathematical symmetries that might be useful in physics,” said Joe Polchinski, a physicist at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at UC Santa Barbara. “This two-time idea seems to have some interesting mathematical properties.”
If Bars is on the right track, some of the most basic processes in physics will need re-examination. Something as simple as how particles move, for example, could be viewed in a new way. In classical physics (before the days of quantum theory), a moving particle was completely described by its momentum (its mass times its velocity) and its position. But quantum physics says you can never know those two properties precisely at the same time.
Bars alters the laws describing motion even more, postulating that position and momentum are not distinguishable at a given instant of time. Technically, they can be related by a mathematical symmetry, meaning that swapping position for momentum leaves the underlying physics unchanged (just as a mirror switching left and right doesn’t change the appearance of a symmetrical face).
In ordinary physics, position and momentum differ because the equation for momentum involves velocity. Since velocity is distance divided by time, it requires the notion of a time dimension. If swapping the equations for position and momentum really doesn’t change anything, then position needs a time dimension too.
“If I make position and momentum indistinguishable from one another, then something is changing about the notion of time,” said Bars. “If I demand a symmetry like that, I must have an extra time dimension.”
Simply adding an extra dimension of time doesn’t solve everything, however. To produce equations that describe the world accurately, an additional dimension of space is needed as well, giving a total of four space dimensions. Then, the math with four space and two time dimensions reproduces the standard equations describing the basic particles and forces, a finding Bars described partially last year in the journal Physical Review D and has expanded upon in his more recent work.
Bars’ math suggests that the familiar world of four dimensions — three of space, one of time — is merely a shadow of a richer six-dimensional reality. In this view the ordinary world is like a two-dimensional wall displaying shadows of the objects in a three-dimensional room.
In a similar way, the observable universe of ordinary space and time may reflect the physics of a bigger space with an extra dimension of time. In ordinary life nobody notices the second time dimension, just as nobody sees the third dimension of an object’s two-dimensional shadow on a wall.
This viewpoint has implications for understanding many problems in physics. For one thing, current theory suggests the existence of a lightweight particle called the axion, needed to explain an anomaly in the equations of the standard model of particles and forces. If it exists, the axion could make up the mysterious “dark matter” that astronomers say affects the motions of galaxies. But two decades of searching has failed to find proof that axions exist. Two-time physics removes the original anomaly without the need for an axion, Bars has shown, possibly explaining why it has not been found.
On a grander level, two-time physics may assist in the quest to merge quantum theory with Einstein’s relativity in a single unified theory. The most popular approach to that problem today, superstring theory, also invokes extra dimensions of space, but only a single dimension of time. Many believe that a variant on string theory, known as M theory, will be the ultimate winner in the quantum-relativity unification game, and M theory requires 10 dimensions of space and one of time.
Efforts to formulate a clear and complete version of M theory have so far failed. “Nobody has yet told us what the fundamental form of M theory is,” Bars said. “We just have clues — we don’t know what it is.”
Adopting the more symmetric two-time approach may help. Describing the 11 dimensions of M theory in the language of two-time physics would require adding one time dimension plus one space dimension, giving nature 11 space and two time dimensions. “The two-time version of M theory would have a total of 13 dimensions,” Bars said.
For some people, that might be considered unlucky. But for Bars, it’s a reason for optimism.
“My hope,” he says, “is that this path that I am following will actually bring me to the right place.”

The Nanotech Construction Kit is a new project aimed at improving the understanding of molecular structures at a nanometer-scale level by visualization and interactive manipulation. Our very first prototype is a virtual-reality program allowing the construction of silicate and carbon structures from scratch by assembling them one atom at a time. In silicate grids, the basic building block is an SiO4 unit, with the four oxygen atoms arranged around the central silicon atom in the shape of a regular tetrahedron. Two silicate units can connect to each other by their silicon atoms covalently bonding to one shared oxygen atom. Geometrically, this means that two tetrahedra can link at their vertices. Thus, silicate units can form regular crystals with a structure similar to diamond.
Carbon structures have single carbon atoms as basic building blocks. In the structure types of interest, each carbon atom forms three covalent bonds with other carbon atoms; the three bonds form a triangle with the carbon atom at its centroid. Therefore, carbon structural units can be represented as flat triangles connecting at their vertices. Due to their bond angles of 120 degrees, carbon units form flat hexagonal grids with the connectivity of chicken wire. By introducing "flaws" in the grid - either pentagons or heptagons - it is possible to create grids with positive or negative local curvature, respectively. It is also possible to wrap hexagonal grids into cylindrical or conical shapes. Carbon structures of interest include Buckyballs (C-60 Buckminsterfullerene) and Nanotubes (wrapped hexagonal grids of varying circumference). Especially interesting is to understand how to introduce flaws into Nanotubes to make them form branches or junctions.

will look at this tommorrow. but isn't time, a unit created by man to measure. a measurement of celestial movements, eg sun, moon, rotation/orbit. also what about the measurement eg 60 cycle. also something does not have to be seen in order to exist. also time/date are up for manipulation. i think people think that we would not exist etc if time/life did not exist. when time is merely a measurement, not a dimension, actual thing. if you measure a piece of wood, in cms/inches, if you don't measure it, its stll there, so time to me is a measurement only.
if processes are to happen etc, then this will take a peroid of time/measurement. so can time exist without the process, or is the length of the process time? this why time, is tricky
... isn't time, a unit created by man to measure.

I've often wondered how physicists keep adding dimensions to space (the last count was 11!), but never onto time. A second dimension of time is an amazing thought. I was listening to someone talking about it, but I can't remember who. They said that UFO's use it and that's how they do such incredible manoeuvres.

Time, The Fourth Dimension

We live in a world of three dimensions. Well, we only perceive three dimensions. We can hypothesize many more dimensions. But, they are difficult to imagine.
Because of Einstein, we often call time the fourth dimension. Special relativity shows that time behaves surprisingly like the three spatial dimensions. The Lorenz equations show this. Length contracts as speed increases. Time expands as speed increases.
Scientists have been graphing time, as if it were a length, for hundreds of years. To the left is a typical graph, showing two things in motion at the same speed, one to the left and one to the right. Time never behaves exactly like a spatial dimension. You cannot go backward in time. And you normally cannot go forward at different rates. But, there are surprising parallels. For some purposes, it is handy to call time a fourth dimension. For other purposes, it is not.
Pretend, for a moment, that there are more than three spatial dimensions. What is a four or five-dimensional cube like? It is hard to visualize. But, we can make a few deductions about such an object. What if a 5-dimensional cube is 2 centimeters on a side, what is its 5-dimensional volume? Well, we can easily generalize from the first three dimensions. A 2x2 square is 4 (2x2) square centimeters in area. A 2x2x2 cube is 8 (2x2x2) cubic centimeters in volume. A 2x2x2x2x2 5-dimensional cube is 32 centimeters-to-the-5th-power in 5-dimensional volume. None of that can be visualized. But, it makes sense. What is the distance between two points in 5-space? You can easily deduce a 5-dimensional Pythagorean Theorem.
Addendum:
I once read in a science fiction story that time is the fourth dimension, and space is the fifth. That's pretty poor; space is the first three dimensions, and there may be more spatial dimensions that we cannot observe or interact with. One would expect a science fiction author to get the simplest science right.

Is a time dimension possible

Can someone tell me how time is supposedly a dimension unto itself. I
understand the function of time as it is related to distance movent through
space as well as change in state but change in state takes place at
different rates for different things and different systems. There are also
many different relationships in regards to distance or motion. How is it that
we can also be moving through a time dimension. Scientists are so quick to
say space-time and that they are seemingly integrated, but how can then there
also be time dimension. This implies a dimension which is distinct. It seems
that time is basically a function of state change , motion through space,
speed and distance. If there is a time dimension then where were any of us 5
minutes ago. 5 days ago, or 5 years ago. If a time dimension exists then we
should be able to discern where we were back in time and even go back in time
if we had the right technology. Since I was in a different state 5 years ago
how could I go back to that same state and since different things change
their state at different rates or speed then how would all these different
things reintegrate themselves to their previous state if they have no
internal knowledge of their previous state. If their is a specific time
dimension then the past should be kind of like a movie or hologram composed
of a complex array of electromagnetic energy patterns that describe how the
universe existed at any single moment in time. If this were true then our
whole universe would have to be viewed like a holographic computer program
and spacetime as the computer on which it runs. How would going back in time
be possible and how would you be able to go back and locate that array of
information that is locked up in time. Would there also be a spacetime energy
axis that you could somehow manipulate to go back to the desired set of
electromagnetic energy patterns in spacetime. If we did manage to get back
into time would our current electromagnetic energy patterns change
back(possibly through some repatterning mechanism) into their previous state
which would presumably be recorded into this array of EM information. Somehow
I am skeptical about a time dimension at this time and see time as a function
of state change in a system or as function of distance and speed but I will
keep an open mind. Maybe scientists who use this term spacetime should give
us better working definition of time and the time dimension as they think it
exists.

who funds these, see if time is dimension, then its can be manipulated? but only one dirction, is time linear or circular? also as for ufo tech? could be gravity/electromagentic manipuilation, eg manipulation of the 3d/laws of nature etc? ufo tech could be govt tech. calling them ufos hides the true levels of tech the govts have. look at the f117 stealth fighter, how many people would say before public knowledge/disclosure that this was man made or alien tech. heck if you showed someone in the 60's the chips, we have today, they would think it was alien tech.

alos does time act the same when in higher dimensions, eg existence beyond 3 dimensions. we don't know do we. time might be irrelevant in higher dimenions, slower, longer the possibilites are endless. if it can manipulated, then is it really a constant, or only a constant in this 3d world?

After describing the real time appearance as beginning in a singularity I wonder which is the "real" time?:-
This might suggest that the so-called imaginary time is really the real time, and that what we call real time is just a figment of our imaginations. In real time, the universe has a beginning and an end in singularities that form a boundary to space-time and at which the laws of science break down. But in imaginary time, there are no singularities or boundaries. so maybe what we call imaginary time is more basic, and what we call real time is just an idea we invent to help us describe what we think the universe is really like.

Pay close attention to what I am now going to reveal to you about the behind-the-scenes planet on which you live, for you will not hear these things anywhere else. There is no book anywhere on the subject we are about to discuss, no article on the Web. Normally only gods and extraterrestrials are privy to this information. The Theosophists should know it, but they haven't got it in them. The Hindus should know it, but they cannot think past their noses. Some Buddhists could potentially know it, but they don't even try because they are caught up in a subtle ignorance. The Illuminati who are destroying humanity cannot know it because it does not flatter their spiritually perverse, soulless and evil nature of playing God with abuse of technology. The New Agers cannot know it because they are too caught up in shallow scientific mysticism. Only a few hundred people on the entire planet can know it, and for them this is written. The rest will either reject it outright or merely believe in it emotionally without understanding.
Surrounding and penetrating the Earth is a subtle or dream realm Earth, and beyond that but penetrating both the physical and subtle globes of Earth is a Causal Sphere of Earth, which is composed of Karma and karmic souls or reincarnating human egos. This Causal Sphere of Karma is called by different names. The New Seers of Mexico call it "The Eagle". They know that karmic souls are prisoners of "The Eagle", who eats them. "The Eagle" also spits them out now and then or reincarnates them for further karmic lessons and gradual development of things like the eventual ability to think, to act in an ethical manner with real conscience, to learn devotion and wisdom, and eventually to evolve into superhumans or adepts. Transcendence of the karmic causal sphere of Earth is a very rare liberation of a highly developed soul.
People who try to believe in reincarnation of souls of the Earth do not know how it really works over long cycles of time. To be able to take regular incarnations in the physical and subtle worlds of life and death is already a great advance beyond the majority of human souls, which are extremely primitive and generally kept in deep storage in a dreamless sleep for long ages. At certain pre-arranged times they are brought out of storage and reincarnated massively. This is what is happening now. Normally there are only a few millions of souls reincarnating on the Earth planet physically. So, a certain standard is maintained, but even then this is a "giant's scheme", which means the peoples and cultures remain patriarchal, warlike, bloody-minded and male-dominated. Spiritual sensitives are suppressed and higher development has to take place in secret, protected circumstances, such as remote mountain valleys or in underground city-schools. Life is tough and the premium is on slow but sure development of logic, cunning and cleverness. The so-called "New World Order" is thus the Old World Order fighting for its life to maintain its corrupt and cunning ways of clever evil and brutality. But all of this is getting a huge amplification through the sudden influx of empty, intellectually incapable and heavily selfish, crude, primitive souls. They are the vast majority of present subhuman humanity and its corrupt, evil leaders. This means that the corrupt, evil leaders will continue to increase and intensify world problems and the masses will stupidly allow it because they are incapable of knowing better. You have to very clearly register this Causal Situation if you want to understand what is going to happen.
I call this mass of primitive, empty causal bodies (souls), The Bubble-Pack. You see, they do not get to reincarnate very often because (a) they are incapable of voluntary, innovative learning and (b) they are only capable of involuntary indoctrination leading to shock-learning through being mislead by soulless, stupid and lying leaders such as we see in the headlines all the time. The Bubble-Pack are here to learn by catastrophic shocks or runaway global problems. The tiny minority of reasonably mature, thoughtful and ethical souls cannot stop this global shock-learning process because it is the next step in causal evolution of the majority of primitive, intellectually inert and unspiritual souls who need their "shock and awe" events. That America and Britain have become utterly evil and blackhearted in the form of their governments and supportive populations is the way the Cosmic Causal Engineers have arranged everything. And it is has all been done before to an Earth over-populated deliberately with weak, empty souls lacking intellectual and ethical development. It happened about 15,000 years ago with the Great Flood and the sinking of the continent of Atlan. It also happened to the same mass of primitive causal bodies when they were over-populated on Mars as the planet Mars was taken out of its Earthlike orbit, freezing its oceans and killing the masses with few survivors. That the New World Order is trying to make a survival colony on Mars for its chosen corrupt and evil Illuminati families and associates is the re-enactment of a deep old unconscious program in their causal unconscious karmic tendencies brought over from Mars. This is why the reincarnated, stupid ex-Neanderthal President of the United States wants to overtly heat up the Moon and Mars programs. The leading members of The Bubble-Pack want to make it good for themselves and kill off the rest of The Bubble-Pack behind them as they go. Then they think they will return and repopulate the Earth sometime with their crude, unevolved and fucked-up clever "elite". Actually, it isn't going to work out that way for them as they are going to be captured by the Cosmic Police at the right moment and put into painful confinement, where they will die horribly, shocked and dazed, for they are, after all, also Bubble-Pack and can learn no other way in their weak and empty causal bodies.
All the causal bodies of the causal sphere of Earth are numbered and tagged for further storage and sometimes disposal or mass causal shiploads to other primitive evolutionary spheres elsewhere in the Galaxy where further future "shock and awe" can be arranged for them in what you would call "primitive alien races" on "backward planets" if you could see what is going on. That is why in Hindu lore there is a group of entities called the ganas, the "numbers", which are actually, unknown to the Hindus of today, the mass of causal human souls. They are ruled in the Hindu myth by Ganapati, the elephant headed demiurge or "patriarch of the numbers" as the Lord of Karma. Ganapati is thus pretty much the same entity as The Eagle of the Mexican Seers. Another Hindu name for this entity is Brahmaa, the four-faced creator of the Earth. In Vedanta, it is the samashti chitta, collective inner mind of humanity, the Collective Unconscious of Carl Jung's psychological cosmology.
The average member of The Bubble-Pack is so empty, stupid and lacking in individuality, that it cannot keep itself in one piece mentally when incarnate in the physical body. So each one is assigned an artificial, subtle entity to keep it in one piece for undergoing foolish activities and suffering the results in future of such actions. These artificial, subtle entities are what the Mexican Seers call the "flyers" or "mud-shadows". In Rudolph Steiner, this entity is called the "Guardian of the Threshold". This entity in Steiner helps maintain automatic connections in the consciousness, the chitta, so that thoughts, emotions and actions will provoke repeating reactions. Without this entity feeding on the energy of the human being and maintaining automatic, conditioned thinking, emotions and actions, there would be no one left there to receive the coming shocks for awakening higher thinking and understanding in the causal body. The Bubble-Pack couldn't make it into the future without these "Mind Parasites", as Colin Wilson calls them. So it is that each and every stupid and unethical subhuman human has a "monkey on his back", or something more resembling what Gurdjieff called a "slug". Also, in Robert Heinlein's old sci-fi novel, The Puppet Masters, this same theme was intuitively developed where everybody on Earth got a "slug" entity attached on the upper back which would control the thinking, emotions and actions of the "taken over" so called "human individual". Another similar theme was developed in the movie, The Body-Snatchers. What the Neo-Nazi American government has installed as their Patriot Acts is a societal mechanism that wants to make sure that every last American citizen will be a thoughtless, numb piece of flag-waving fodder for the military occupation and privatization monopolies takeover of the entire planet where no real thinking or true ethical conscience can any longer function. Every man and woman is to have a "slug" on their back without exception. Kissinger and the Neocons, the Bilderbergers, fear Thought and Real Conscience making a comeback in the population. They also want to spread the black operation of CIA/Mossad pseudo-Al-Queda self-terrorism in order to stamp out true democracy and free thinking individuals in Europe, as with their 9/11 follow-up in Spain on 3/11. Of course, this temporarily failed as the Spanish people became slightly wise to what was going on, but even the new Spanish government will not admit that it was an act of joint complicity with the outgoing Spanish government. So Continental Europe's governments are also secretly in league with the Devil, as it were. All Europeans are supposed to receive their "slugs" if they do not already have them. The New World Order wants zero free thinkers and souls on the planet. Nothing but Bubble-Pack is supposed to be incarnate on the planet according to the ruling part of The Bubble-Pack.
All this is indeed the Cosmic Causal Plan for the Earth. Get used to it. You cannot stop it or "awaken humanity". Humanity is Bubble-Pack. It needs its coming horrible shocks, suffering and enslavement to the New World Order bastards. But there is a dispensation for the tiny minority of more or less thoughtful and ethical human beings. It is called by the Mexican Seers, The Eagle's GIFT. It is also called the Sufi Way of the Naqshbandiyya. It is also simply any genuinely personal and private Yoga without large emotional gatherings or cults that appeal to the Bubble-Pack. Manipulating light waves, or electromagnetic radiation, has led to many technologies, from cameras to lasers to medical imaging machines that can see inside the human body.
Scientists at the University of Michigan have developed a way to make a lens-like device that focuses electromagnetic waves down to the tiniest of points. The breakthrough opens the door to the next generation of technology, said Roberto Merlin, professor of physics at U-M. His research on the discovery will be published online July 12 in Science Express.
Everywhere we go, we are surrounded by electromagnetic waves that are generated naturally, such as sunlight, and artificially, by appliances such as microwave ovens and radio transmitters. Some waves are visible, and some are invisible.
Materials respond differently to different wavelengths, and when using electromagnetic waves, one is usually limited by the length of the light wave, Merlin said. For example, the amount of information you can store on a CD is limited by the number of bits you can fit on the CD, and this is dictated by the length of the electromagnetic wave. The smaller the wavelength, the smaller the bit, which means more bits of data can be stored on the CD.
There is a huge push underway to find ways to get around this limitation, but until now scientists didn't have a good method for achieving that, Merlin said.
Using mathematical models, Merlin developed a formula that removes the wavelength limitation. Merlin is now working with assistant professor Anthony Grbic from the U-M College of Engineering to build the device, and they have filed for a patent.
The device will look like a plate or a disc, and is etched with a specific pattern. As the waves pass through the patterned lens, it is sculpted into different sizes and shapes. The lens does not refract, or bend the light waves---which is how conventional lenses work---but rather it reshapes the wave.
The discovery holds promise for applications in data storage, non-contact sensing, imaging, and nanolithography.
With the new technology, a CD could hold up to one hundred times more information by using terahertz radiation rather than visible light, even though the length of a terahertz wave is about 1000 times longer.

The Thoughts of Man
IT is the purpose of all ciphers to invest a few signs with much meaning. A peculiarity of the Book of Genesis is that it begins with a very strict and close code and gradually develops and unfolds its fifty chapters through symbols and allegories and finally through semi-historical tales.
In the severity of its beginning, in its first chapter, in its first verse, in its first sequence of letter-numbers, is the seed, and in the seed is the whole. This whole can be (and is expected to be) grasped in the Bayt-Raysh-Aleph-Sheen-Yod-Tav of Bereshyt. This sequence is in the Revelation and is the Revelation, and those who grasp it are in the Revelation and are, in action the Revelation itself.
It is in effect a formula, or rather a fundamental equation of the interplay between Aleph and Yod. Aleph, timeless pulsation life-death-life-death, is shown in the first three graphs BaytRaysh-Aleph in its surging motion of creative energy, and Yod, the evolutionary process of existence is held, so to speak, between the hammer of cosmic metabolism, Sheen, and the anvil of its resistant container, Tav.
The complete schema goes beyond a mere formula affirming the equivalence of those two terms; its sweeps beyond every duality by amalgamating Aleph and Yod and making them one. The very formulation of that equation is therefore its solution. In spite of being introduced by means of an intellectual approach it can project in us the essential game of life and existence if we will allow it to break up our every-day linear way of thinking.
The six graphs of Bereshyt do not express different ideas linked one to another by a logical sequence. They do not belong to any time process. They are simultaneous and can therefore be permuted so as to form different schemata, each one of them significant. But these developments cannot be considered here. It will be enough to examine the equation Bereshyt just as it is written.
There is no delusion in it because the Revelation is not a fantastic message from a supernatural world. Surely the fantastic thing is to be alive and yet not to know what life is. The whole mystery of life is within us, and yet we search for revelations concerning it in books. Does thinking or speaking about God give us any knowledge of what God is? Are we surprised to discover that the human mind is in a state of total contradiction? We are living in time and space, which we can measure only by sections. We can never reach the top of the ladder; for it is just as impossible for us to conceive of a beginning or an end to time and space as it is to imagine that time and space never were at all.
Thus our reasoning faculties are inadequate if we wish to express any vital truth in terms of daily language. Such vital truths are: existence, life, death, the cause of thought or the way to awaken the revelation within us. The words which our reason has concocted belong to a world where everything is measurable and contradictory (as are life and death). In fact, contradiction exists in the very thought that has coined these words. The sacred language of the letter-numbers, however, is not a product of this thought. These signs are apertures through which to glimpse the presence of the cosmic forces. What is more, they permit these forces to penetrate into our very being.
It is necessary that we understand the extraordinary dissimilarity between the language of the letter-numbers and our own language, into which the so-called translations of the Bible were made. This difference becomes strikingly evident with regard to the word Bereshyt, the very first sequence of letternumbers in the Bible: 2.200.1.300.10.400. It is absurd that this should have been translated, In the beginning (God created the heaven and the earth). That unconceivable "beginning" abruptly thrusts the mind into the deadlock of a creed. The believer is he who dreams an unthinkable thought.
We make two fundamental errors. In the first place, our own language is an exclusive language: that is to say, if we speak the words "chair" or "yesterday" or "hot", we exclude every thought that is not "chair" or "yesterday" or "hot". We have thus settled our thoughts exclusively upon a certain thing or fact. But when this thing or fact is "the beginning of all things", which we cannot conceive, we do not know what we are talking about-we are simply dreaming.
The second error is to use this limiting thought in trying to perceive the totality of life; for as soon as we designate something that we do not know, we do not designate something that exists. At once, we are in the projection of our dream. We can "talk our heads off" saying words such as God, the Eternal, Supreme Being, or Universal Mind; but what we mean by those terms will never be anything more than indefinite imagery, and very mediocre and puerile at that, since it is in accordance with the limited measure of our own thought.
The result of these two mistakes is that as "believers" we tend to think of God in terms of men. We attribute to "him" thoughts, will, projects, a plan of evolution and what not. When in our thinking we relate ourselves to something which we do not know, we are, in fact, imagining something about which we are ignorant. What we need, instead of faith, is direct perception. This includes, first of all, knowledge of ourselves. Our instrument of perception being ourselves, if we do not perceive directly so as to be Revelation itself, why do we not "check" our instrument and detect the flaws in our functioning, instead of searching for truth with inadequate means? To discover where and what is the error: that is what truth is.
