TM to Repay Debts of 2,000 Female Prisoners
A bill approved by the Tehran City Council authorizes Tehran Municipality to pay off the debts of about 2,000 female prisoners.
Based on the bill, Tehran Municipality is obliged to allocate 10 billion rials (about $1 million) for releasing female prisoners in one month, with the assistance of Tehran Prisoners Supporting Organization, reported Mehr News Agency.
The bill is aimed at supporting families, preventing an increase in the number of delinquent women and separating first-time offenders from habitual criminals.
Women breadwinners, married women with or without children, and girls who have not committed moral and security crimes as well as those who have not been imprisoned for drug smuggling are among those covered by the bill.
The release of women guilty of unpremeditated crimes and those who were jailed because of debts are also included in the bill. The municipality will provide facilities to prisoners whose debt does not exceed 10 million rials (about $1,015).
