Despite the economic crisis, Tesco today announced profits of 1.45 billion pounds for six months, a rise of 10 percent. People Before Profit Charter supporters are holding protests in a number of cities.

Tesco started out as a small grocers and grew into the big co you see today through the hard work of the owner Jack Coen (someone Coen, I think his wife was Tes.) What's wrong with a hard work making profits?

Because of supermarkets, especially Tosco and sheeple flocking to them, I now have to drive to get the most basic of foods (fruit & veg).
This is NOT A GOOD THING FOLKS.
Wait till these giants pull the plug on our food supplies.

Lol thats not what they tell you in the induction, where did you find that info? Its entirely wrong.
the guy that started was called TES Cofield, it was one of the first shops that introduced distribution centres to speed up delivery of alike products throughout many areas
You know I don't know where I heard it....I think it was my grandparents who claimed the guy owned a shop near where they lived when they were younger.
Can't find info on tesco origins on wiki, or a quick google search.
Still what is wrong with private companies making profits?

Wiki Jack Cohen and it will tell you it was him that founded Tesco. I watched a documentary back in school in business class about the origins of Tesco which more or less fits with what the wiki says. Then again I think it was the BBC...

This is hardly suprising when my food bill was £47.50 on the weekend and this time last year the same amount of stuff was under £30 bloody quid.
Money grabbing tosspots. clearly they have obviously increased the amount they are charging much higher than what it has cost them to buy.

Tescos are gathering all the farmers and suppliers in their fold. They cut back on what they pay farmers and push up food prices. They are the number one supermarket retailer. They will soon be in America. Four or five big companies will push out all the smaller Asian corner stores and will dominate the market, Soon we will have no choice where to shop and when they bring in cashless shopping you will have to be fingerprinted and belong to their club before being allowed to buy food!
If the government deem you a dissident or subversive or a David Icke fan thay can cut you off at central computer, No food for you!

Its ok making profits as long as you share the profits equally with the people who give you the profits, after all his business would not have made profits without the help of others, and not forgetting the people who shop there and the businesses that are driven out of trading due to these corporations:(
do not all people who work, work hard:confused:;)

Dont like it, don't do it.
If you don't think you get paid enough for your work, go somewhere else, if no where else will pay you more for your work. You got to ask yourself are you worth more?
If the answere is still yes, work for yourself.
Are other businesses driven out if business by Tesco, or are they driven out of business by the consumers?
Answer: Consumers.
Tesco makes record profits but the wages of the people who worked there arse's off to make tesco the success that it is get NO PAY RISE its a sad sad world.

my goodness, aren't you full of compassion:rolleyes::p
what about respect for workers.
not everyone is as fortunate or educated as some are,so what do you say to them like it or lump it,this is why we are in the state we are in with attitudes like that.
And small businesses are driven out due to the undercutting in prices of the bigger corporate businesses who can afford to sell things cheaper due to corporation greed buying goods from source at low costs,
and shoppers obviously shop where it is cheaper, are you getting it?
and not everyone is able to work for themselves, there is a bigger picture in all of this.
And it as a lot to do with corporate GREED and MASSIVE profits for a few.
i feel you need to go back to 1694 or some other dark period,oh you do not have to ,its already here.
The Bank of England (formally the Governor and Company of the Bank of England) is a state-owned institution[1] and the central bank of the United Kingdom. It was established in 1694 to act as the English Government's banker, and to this day it still acts as the banker for the UK Government. The Bank has a monopoly[2] on the issue of banknotes in England and Wales. The Bank's Monetary Policy Committee is responsible for managing the monetary policy of the country.

So it is the greed of shoppers for lower prices, rather than their compassion for more "ethical" shops which actually drives the smaller shops out. That is the bigger picture.
A Co-op has just opened near me, I will join and shop there almost exclusivly. How is that for compassion.
I know I am butting heads on a few threads, but I think the goals are in reality the same, we are just on very different paths.

Lady Porter, daughter of Jack Cohen the founder of Tesco, was not short of a bob or two. It is, rather, about the lust for power and, more seriously, about how a determined rich individual, can overcome her own unpopularity and take over a major instrument of government, Westminster City Council, and subvert it to her ends.
The Porter scandal goes back to the late 1980's when she presided over a Council initiative to sell Council properties to those in marginal wards who were potentially inclined to vote for the Conservative Party of which she was a member.
The initiative, selling some 500 Council homes a year, under the grand title of "building stable communities" was nothing but a despicable scheme to buy votes, and she was well and truly nailed by later investigations into the affair.
The District Auditor accused Porter of, "wilful misconduct" and "disgraceful and improper gerrymandering", and the case for recompense crawled through the courts with Porter denying any wrongdoing and proclaiming that she would fight the case all the way. Following a House of Lord's ruling, Porter was eventually ordered to repay the losses demanded by the Council.

What do you expect people to do who are watching every penny due to low wages???????? Thats if you can get a descent job?
Recently shops like aldi and netto are doing more business due to the price hike, everyone is feeling the pinch, apart from the elites, and it will all end in tears:(

I dont have any problem with Tesco making huge profits.
It is a good shop to shop at.
Firstly they give the punters what they want.
You can buy very cheap Tesco value items which are just as good but alot cheaper. EG: 3 bars of Soap for 14p made using good ingredients.
Secondly, Tesco move with the times quickly. They introduce new ranges such as low carb and msg free, etc.
I dont buy anything which has margerine, soya, msg,
Tesco is alot cheaper for me than ASDA.
I dont shop at Marks and Spencers or Sainsburys because much of their profits go to Israel. I realise ofcurse that Tesco had similar roots but today they trade alot more ethically than in the past.
I would love to shop at Waitrose but an average weekly shop costs double what it would at Tesco.
The people moaning about this are usually the BBC and Channel 4 and they want everyone shopping at Sainsburys or M&S for selfish reasons.
I dont like Lidl because all it's food have too much chemical additives.
Iceland is good but there is usually no free parking.
So most of my shopping money goes to Tesco.

Nothing at all, I'm all for free (non destructive) enterprise.
But i take exception to them taking over the whole country, driving local businesses out of business and flogging nothing but over priced chemical laced shite. My local shop is a 'tesco express' and sells absolutely nothing any vaguely sane person would want to eat.

Down with big fat corporate supermarkets, that's all i can say, yeah i am sure they have compassion for the profits they make, have you read any of my posts?
I remember when we did not have supermarkets, just markets and smaller shops, the food was cleaner and greener.

BUT people wanted cheaper rather than cleaner and greener so that's what they chose.
You have the freedom to choose your own food and where you get it from.
If it costs extra to go ethical you have to overcome your own greed for lower prices. I'm guessing you have, but you can't tell the next person NOT TO shop at tesco any more than they can tell you TO shop at tesco.
Educate them on the subject yes, but the choice is theirs.

tesco sucks arse... why do they now refuse to open a checkout after 11pm,leaving a crowd of workers to stand around watching you piss about with their crappy self serve checkouts? why do they allow such poor customer service?
honestly, compare your shopping experience and final bill to asda and you will be pleasantly surprised. not that asda are any less evil, being part of walmart, but at least they have excellent customer service, genuine bargains and aren't afraid to make plenty of bread and then reduce it to 5p a loaf at around 9pm!
now whenever i go shopping, i pass tesco on the way, fill up a basket and abandon it near the customer service desk in a typically english protest!

How is saying that big brother you have misinterpreted:confused:
restriction of choice and restriction of education is what most have, only the choices of the elites that are made for most, with fat cat corporations taking over everything, pushing the smaller people down. How can that be freedom?
