FIGHTER jets, infantry troops, destroyers and submarines will converge on Wales next month for one of the largest military exercises of all time.
The two-week exercise – codenamed Joint Warrior – is designed to recreate a scenario in which Britain and other sovereign nations go to war against a “state-sponsored terrorist movement” – using a vast array of lethal modern weapons.
Taking place between October 6 and October 16, it will provide coordinated training for all three UK Armed Services, plus forces from EIGHT allied nations.
The whole of Wales has been designated as a flying area for the exercise, while so-called “managed danger area” ranges at Castlemartin and Manorbier in Pembrokeshire and Pembrey near Llanelli will be used for ground strafing, bombing and missile practice using live ammunition.
An area of the West Wales coast has also been earmarked as a maritime “warfighting” area for Joint Warrior.
The exercise is aimed at giving pilots, ships’ crews and ground troops vital training before they deploy to war zones like Iraq or Afghanistan.
According to the RAF, Joint Warrior will be particularly useful for Forward Air Controllers (troops directing airborne missile strikes), the role made famous by Prince Harry who became known by his call sign Widow Six Seven while directing fire against the Taliban.
Six companies of infantry, 29 surface and four sub-surface maritime units and 60 aircraft – flying at a rate of about 80 to 100 sorties a day – will be involved in the exercise.
An MoD spokesman said: “The two weeks will develop through a period of tension into simulated warfighting/open hostilities.”
The exercise aims to provide opportunities for all warfighting disciplines including:
nClose Air Support (CAS) – executed by fast jet aircraft and Forward Air Controllers, often using live weapons;
nConvoy Support, Time Sensitive Targeting (TST) and urban close air support scenarios – “in order to replicate current Middle-East operational missions”;
nLarge Force Element (LFE) missions – which will target fixed and mobile targets including inflatable Scud Decoys and Electronic Warfare (EW) emitters simulating surface-to-air threats;
nAnti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Warfare (AsuW) and also, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions – all carried out by Maritime Patrol Aircraft;
nJoint fires – involving live weapons on ranges in Welsh Wales;
nSubmarine training – boats will complete sub-vs-sub and sub-vs-ship exercises.
The MoD spokesman said: “The exercise will accommodate a squadron of Tornado GR4s from 12 Sqn, RAF Lossiemouth and a squadron of Gripen aircraft from 171 Sqn, Swedish Air Force plus asso-ciated support personnel drawn from support units throughout the RAF.
“This is a particularly important exercise for the Tornado GR4 deployment as this will also act as a full mission rehearsal for their forthcoming deployment to Afghanistan.”
But Squadron Leader Peter Sinclair of the RAF in Wales moved to allay fears about the impact on people – and the environment.
He said: “Some of the exercise areas overlap environmentally-sensitive conservation zones, which contain a wide variety of marine wildlife, sea bird breeding grounds and protected fauna and flora.
“Furthermore, the farming, fishing and tourist industries are important economic activities, which benefit from the natural beauty and relative isolation of some of the exercise areas. Against this background, the MoD recognises the impact of military activity and takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously.
“During the planning of the exercise, Environmental Impact Assessments are conducted for all potentially damaging activities, such as the use of active sonar and live weapons. Furthermore, close working relationships with landowners and key national stakeholders, combined with engagement with local communities, ensure that appropriate environmental mitigation procedures are put in place and then adhered to.
“It should be noted that the MoD has decreed that environmental considerations are always to take priority over the achievement of training objectives. This direction remains a primary consideration throughout exercise planning and execution.”
The director of the exercise, Capt Paddy McAlpine OBE said: “Joint Warrior will offer high-quality joint tactical training with maximum tactical interaction, tailored to meet the participants’ requirements across the whole of the UK whilst creating as little impact on the environment as possible.
“I am sure that the high-fidelity joint tactical training environment provided by JTEPS within Joint Warrior will ensure that UK and allied participants are rigorously prepared for operational tasks in theatres world-wide.”

i have been thinking this myself. there are many things pointing to an attack in london.
my partners father is a fireman and has told us about "terrorist bombing" drills that are coming up soon across britain. inparticular here in Edinburgh and in glasgw and london.
since 7/7 anything that states its a drill ive have my eyes firmly on. sadly he still thinks terrorism is real and that 9/11 was not a conspiracy and was done by terrorists..... ah how the light of truth will shine very soon .

They need the training, they're not prepared. I was arrested and held under the terrorism act in Feb 2007 for calling in a suspect package. The police opened it and declared it a hoax, then cleared Gravesend Town for a controlled explotion of it. It was when I questioned why they were frightening the people the way they were when they KNEW the bag was not a threat, they opened it in front of me and my son, that I was arrested and held for 8 hours, to cover their own incompetance! It was reported in a 1 inch collum in the Gravesend news and no where else.

I still have a letter from the police chief explaining to me that his officers where not abusive with me but perhaps a little robusque, to which I responded, when I tell you to fuck off I'm not being verbally abusive just a little bit colourfull, it depends on the spin you put on it.

I then realised the trouble they could course for me and bailed out of taking it further with the independent police commission. But like I say, they are not prepared to handle major incidences. They need the millitary to do it for them.

By 'out of the way' that could be interpreted as 'otherwise occupied', and in the light of what happened to the military 'on exercises' during WTC 9/11 and the security, fire, ambulance, police services etc., 'on a practice drill' on London 7/7, I'm sure that most here would agree that anything 'they' say is just 'a drill', or 'an exercise' these days is highly suspicious.

USS DOYLE, At Sea (NNS) -- Ships led by Commander, Destroyer Squadron (COMDESRON) 24 left the U.S. East Coast for Scotland Sept. 19 to participate with allied navies in Joint Warrior, a coalition exercise designed and led by the Joint Tactical Exercise Planning Staff (JTEPS) in the United Kingdom.

Sailors from USS Mitscher (DDG 57), USS Doyle (FFG 39), USS Klakring (FFG 42), USS Hawes (FFG 53) and USNS Leroy Grumman (T-AO 195) will play a prominent role in the exercise intended to improve interoperability between coalition naval forces and prepare participants for upcoming deployments.

"Joint Warrior will provide our Sailors with an opportunity to engage in a variety of training scenarios that explore real-world challenges on a strategic, operational and tactical level – in a controlled environment," said Capt John Kersh, commander, DESRON 24. "We will focus our efforts on enhancing our ability to operate in a multinational, multi-platform environment."

Look at the terrain of Wales as it may give a hint to the type of scenario they are training for.

Before the D-Day landings, US troops practiced on the South coast of the UK, on a piece of land which was 'as near as possible' to the terrain of the designated beaches in France. This included the land beyond the beach such as dunes etc.

FIGHTER jets, infantry troops, destroyers and submarines will converge on Wales next month for one of the largest military exercises of all time.
The two-week exercise – codenamed Joint Warrior – is designed to recreate a scenario in which Britain and other sovereign nations go to war against a “state-sponsored terrorist movement” – using a vast array of lethal modern weapons.
Taking place between October 6 and October 16, it will provide coordinated training for all three UK Armed Services, plus forces from EIGHT allied nations.
The whole of Wales has been designated as a flying area for the exercise, while so-called “managed danger area” ranges at Castlemartin and Manorbier in Pembrokeshire and Pembrey near Llanelli will be used for ground strafing, bombing and missile practice using live ammunition.
An area of the West Wales coast has also been earmarked as a maritime “warfighting” area for Joint Warrior.
The exercise is aimed at giving pilots, ships’ crews and ground troops vital training before they deploy to war zones like Iraq or Afghanistan.
According to the RAF, Joint Warrior will be particularly useful for Forward Air Controllers (troops directing airborne missile strikes), the role made famous by Prince Harry who became known by his call sign Widow Six Seven while directing fire against the Taliban.
Six companies of infantry, 29 surface and four sub-surface maritime units and 60 aircraft – flying at a rate of about 80 to 100 sorties a day – will be involved in the exercise.
An MoD spokesman said: “The two weeks will develop through a period of tension into simulated warfighting/open hostilities.”
The exercise aims to provide opportunities for all warfighting disciplines including:
nClose Air Support (CAS) – executed by fast jet aircraft and Forward Air Controllers, often using live weapons;
nConvoy Support, Time Sensitive Targeting (TST) and urban close air support scenarios – “in order to replicate current Middle-East operational missions”;
nLarge Force Element (LFE) missions – which will target fixed and mobile targets including inflatable Scud Decoys and Electronic Warfare (EW) emitters simulating surface-to-air threats;
nAnti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Warfare (AsuW) and also, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions – all carried out by Maritime Patrol Aircraft;
nJoint fires – involving live weapons on ranges in Welsh Wales;
nSubmarine training – boats will complete sub-vs-sub and sub-vs-ship exercises.
The MoD spokesman said: “The exercise will accommodate a squadron of Tornado GR4s from 12 Sqn, RAF Lossiemouth and a squadron of Gripen aircraft from 171 Sqn, Swedish Air Force plus asso-ciated support personnel drawn from support units throughout the RAF.
“This is a particularly important exercise for the Tornado GR4 deployment as this will also act as a full mission rehearsal for their forthcoming deployment to Afghanistan.”
But Squadron Leader Peter Sinclair of the RAF in Wales moved to allay fears about the impact on people – and the environment.
He said: “Some of the exercise areas overlap environmentally-sensitive conservation zones, which contain a wide variety of marine wildlife, sea bird breeding grounds and protected fauna and flora.
“Furthermore, the farming, fishing and tourist industries are important economic activities, which benefit from the natural beauty and relative isolation of some of the exercise areas. Against this background, the MoD recognises the impact of military activity and takes its environmental responsibilities very seriously.
“During the planning of the exercise, Environmental Impact Assessments are conducted for all potentially damaging activities, such as the use of active sonar and live weapons. Furthermore, close working relationships with landowners and key national stakeholders, combined with engagement with local communities, ensure that appropriate environmental mitigation procedures are put in place and then adhered to.
“It should be noted that the MoD has decreed that environmental considerations are always to take priority over the achievement of training objectives. This direction remains a primary consideration throughout exercise planning and execution.”
The director of the exercise, Capt Paddy McAlpine OBE said: “Joint Warrior will offer high-quality joint tactical training with maximum tactical interaction, tailored to meet the participants’ requirements across the whole of the UK whilst creating as little impact on the environment as possible.
“I am sure that the high-fidelity joint tactical training environment provided by JTEPS within Joint Warrior will ensure that UK and allied participants are rigorously prepared for operational tasks in theatres world-wide.”

There's training going on already... Cambridge area had something going on recently, there have been wings of planes going over here and low level hercules and even an apache helicopter. This is central wales and over the last month. As you say, noisy buggers. Wish they'd all piss off and go play their murder games somewhere else. Better still hope they all crash.

I actually heard a Chinook twice today as I sat at my desk in Central London. I have never heard one pass over my work place before today. I didn't see it but I knew it/they were low. They pass over my house on the outskirts of London quite regularly, and I would say within the last year they have been more frequent.

this is very true, my girlfriends dad is a fireman and he said military and emergency services will be doing "anti-terror" excercises. we live in edinburgh and he mentioned there would be "staged" events for training drills etc. he didnt give any specific dates tho or if it was nation wide, from the sounds of things it will be and is.

good question. yeh i agree, i know of a few large excercises however this is quite extensive. im farely sure they are preparing for something and they know what is going to happen.
i mean we could look at it like they have information that involves the protection of the country and they are preparing to do what they have to to protect........ but i find that highly unlikely considering who it really is that we are referring about .
please people just be on the safe side have food supplies etc ready. if the worse thing happens like a situation where we all have to protect ourselves and leave the city then it really is best to be prepared.
i dont want this to happen and im sure alot of people would agree but this "nation wide" excercise is looking way beyond anything "normal".

I remember a recent interview on The jeremy Vine Radio Show with the American equivelant of shadow foreign secretary and when pressed she stated that if/when Obama became President he would be prepared to 'go into' Pakistan to root out and arrest Osama Bin Laden.
