CAIRO (AFP) - An Egyptian donkey has been jailed for stealing corn on the cob from a field belonging to an agricultural research institute in the Nile Delta, local media reported on Thursday.

The ass and its owner were apprehended at a police checkpoint that had been set up after the institute's director complained that someone was stealing his crops, the state-owned Al-Ahram daily said.

The unnamed ungulate was found in possession of the institute's corn and a local judge sentenced him to 24 hours in prison. The man who had his ass thrown in jail got off with a fine of 50 Egyptian pounds (nine dollars, six euros).

A minister in the Democratic Republic of Congo has ordered a Kinshasa jail to release a dozen goats, which he said were being held there illegally.

Deputy Justice Minister Claude Nyamugabo said he found the goats just in time during a routine jail visit.

The beasts were due to appear in court, charged with being sold illegally by the roadside.

The minister said many police had serious gaps in their knowledge and they would be sent for retraining.

Mr Nyamugabo was conducting a routine visit to the prison when, he said, he was astonished to discover not only humans, but a herd of goats crammed into a prison cell in the capital.

He has blamed the police for the incident.

It is not clear what will happen to the owners of the goats, who have also been imprisoned.

BBC Africa analyst Mary Harper says that given the grim state of prisons in Congo, the goats will doubtless be relieved about being spared a trial.

There was no word on what their punishment would have been, had they been found guilty.

Sheep arrested over man sex attacks
A sheep has been arrested by police investigating a series of violent sex attacks on men.

A sheep was taken into custody over a series of attacks on humans at a farm in Chislehurst, Bromley.

Officers arrested the sheep during a dawn raid at it's home in Dulwich, south east London.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the sheep was also arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs with intent to supply.

The move follows several complaints made to police about a sheep molesting men on grassland off Botany Bay Lane, Chislehurst, in May and June.

Witnesses reported a sheep sexually assaulting men before running off, often leaving wool at the scene.

Two joggers became suspicious when the sheep was spotted pulling up his wool as he stood near a man that was lying on the ground.

A young stable girl who came face to face with the sheep during a similar incident also contacted detectives.

It is understood that the sheep was traced after forensic scientists identified DNA recovered from a piece of wool found at the scene.

Two men were found dead in the field during the period of the attacks but it is not known if their deaths were linked.

Police are also investigating reports that the suspect took photographs of the men before the attacks.

Penetration of or by an animal is illegal and carries a sentence of up to two years imprisonment.
