I am off to New York for a week next month, with my wife and friends for my 40th birthday.
Its somewhere i have always wanted to visit.
So....in the current climate do you think i am daft and will i end up in some FEMA death camp if everything goes belly up whilst i am there !

In truth i still have every intention of going and celebrating my birthday in New york. I say this tongue in cheek, but i am genuinley worried about the current economic crisis and its effects on the world, and also leaving my 2 children home with their grand parents whilst we are gone.

Should i worry ?

Enjoy yourself I say...Unless something drastic happens in the meantime in which case just don't go.Make sure you know where the British Embassy is before you go, if anything does happen, try and get to that. It'll be alright though anyway. It'll take a few months for things to reach a boiling point.

Yeah i know what your saying, i have visited plenty of places more interesting, spiritually shall we say ?
I guess its the movies :D
I just want to let my hair down and have some fun in the bright lights, do all the tacky tourist stuff etc.
Then when i turn 40 i intend to calm down.... a bit.

dont even joke about terrorists or bombs when going through the airport, they will whisk you away to a nice locked room and totally ruin your holiday.

remember when they say "anything to declare"
you DONT say
"yes umm, about 40 lbs of plastique and a couple of RF detonators..

.. shit!"

Well just think if at all goes tits up you'll get free board at a local FEMA death camp and if your lucky free plastic coffin, burial or incineration. You could save yourself a pretty penny. Always look on the brightside :D

Yes i am looking forward to Central park, the trees should be turning golden when we go at the end of October, I take it the John Lennon memorial is easy enough to find ?
I am expecting it to be rammed as the New york marathon is on whilst we are there.

Bet you ANY money that you will be put on "special security" as you go through the airport (all random of course *cough* ahem*) where you will have a thorough search, shoes off, belts off, electronic testing for explosives and a thorough body search and you get to stand in a queue with anyone who looks slightly indian or middle eastern. Mark my words.

Your internet logs reveal a lot about you, such as visiting dissenter websites like DI.com, I bet that you are on the blue list, which means they will want to take extra special care of you as you pass through security.

Come and let us know how you enjoy it when you get back, and I wish you a happy birthday in the big apple.

Seriously ????

I will warn my wife and friends, i have not managed to switch them on to the truth yet. That might convince them !
Or if i dont get any "special security" they will think i'm even more of a loon !

Anyway, thaks for the early birthday wishes :)

Yeah just tell your wife that you might get singled out due to your web surfing, thats what I did when I went to Amerika.

My wife was like "yeah yeah sure you will" and sure enough at check-in a call was made and I was informed that I would have "special security checks". I checked in, got immediately moved to the queue of people wearing turbans, iraqis, anyone with even a hint of brown colouring and had the most intense scrutiny of all my stuff and a thorough full body search. I went to Florida but went via washington, had the same at washington airport (just for a connecting flight!!) and when i got my case back at Florida it had security tape all over it and had been well and truly rummaged through, I know this because the interior straps had not been done up like I had done them.

When i left florida to go to denver, SAME security stuff even though I was taking a connecting flight to Vegas and then the SAME when I came back via Chicago.

It was an eye-opener for sure and even more amazing was that I predicted that it would happen.

The fuckers at Florida even OPENED a clear plastic box of candy floss that I bought at Disneyland. I hadn't intended on opening it either, it was a gift for someone back in Blighty, but now ruined. Wankers.

Needless to say, i vowed NEVER to go to America again.

IMO, you can't live your life wondering "what if" or whether the worst is going to happen. You'd be going nowhere fast! Go, relax, make the most of it, have fun!

I hope you enjoy New York - it's not every day you get to celebrate in such style! Have a wonderful time. :)

well, i have a friend who applied for canadian citizenship and he just took the citizenship test, which is the last step in the whole procedure.

few months ago i mentioned him 9/11 and he watched some documentaries and he was fully convinced that it was an inside job. i even mentioned him about reptilians, david icke, underground bases, etc. i used to sent him links and i'm sure he was looking at most of them as he was interested in this stuff.

anyway, when he took the test and passed last week, they gave him a list consisting of 10-12 items (employment letter, tax returns, car insurance...) to send them. now, as anyone who knows the procedure, if you managed to take the test (last step before you gain citizenship) you have already been checked multiple times. i suspect that his web activity could be the reason for this.

let's see if i will go through the same thing next year. i'll let you know :)

New York is a nice place. I visited Manhatten for a week on a study trip. Just try to avoid drinking the water there or breathing the air. Maybe smoke alot of cigarettes since the air you get through a cigarette filter even with the tobacco is cleaner ;)

Also, visit times square at night :) It seems like day there. With those high building you almost have to dislodge your neck to see the sky, so normally you dont even notice that its night there at all, unless you look at your clock.

Because omfg it's the best dessert place I know. I highly recommend the frrrozen hot chocolate. It's the best chocolate thing I've ever had in my life, as well as the best dessert.

And while you're in new york, make sure to eat at the occasional diner, and try to hit up every pizza place that isn't a chain. Go to the one street that is little italy and find the restaurants that have to take you through the place into the backyard where you eat surrounded by fans. those places rule.

OH YEAH - And eat as much italian ices as you can get your hands on. They are better in new york than you'll find anywhere. Just find the places that serve the right kinds.

It's just a mixed opinion here as it is anywhere else. Only here you will get people that are super serious about the whole thing, and would sooner punch you out then have you spit on the memory of the people that died there. Because if you believe the government blew up the WTC you're an idiot.

Well on a positive note, when those people DO find out the truth (and accept it), then the shock will hopefully have an effect of them and make them realise that THEY have been massively deceived, and they will feel as just as strongly about bringing Bush/Cheney etc to justice.
From what I heard, the firemen in New York are well are that their colleagues were murdered on 911 by the "government".

i'm not sure lightseeker, maybe its just a coincidence but i never heard of additional papers being asked after taking the test (not that i know a lot of people who went through the process). i think he mentioned that that it was only him among 20-30 people. mine was just a thought maybe it was a random check though they already have all that info, and you don't even have to be present in the country after your application... so i find it quite strange that they ask all kinds of documentation -it's like some asking you to take a 1st year exam just before your graduation from university :)-

good luck with the application!

I've only been gotten the SSSS on the bottom of my ticket once and it was because we had to go through security twice and missed our plane. And of course I recited the Declaration of Independence as I was being searched & told passersby to vote for Bob Barr. I go much worse dissenter sites than DI.com, have done street action protests, & have had Fed visits (not at 3am - they like us) so don't be too worried!

My brother-in-law's a New Yorker, a good old fashioned Bronx boy! :)

I'd say you should go - one of the best cities in the world, with some of the friendliest, most intelligent, funny, welcoming people I have ever met! (and, coming from Wales, that's a BIG compliment! :p)

I adore NY. :)

But for no longer than 2 weeks at a time! Could NEVER live there - I'd go mental!! ;)

Ooh, one bit of advice, when you get off the plane and they tell you not to switch on your mobile until you've left the airport - make sure you adhere to this!

I nearly got dragged away for trying to ring my sister to let her know I'd landed!

I'm sure you'll be ok, though I cannot think of any reasons why I would ever want to step foot on the United States of Fascism.

A gave a Dutch friend of mine a 9/11 DVD last year, and when he was coming back from the USA to Holland, he was asked to take off his shoes, and he made some comment that there wasn't likely to be bomb in his shoes, they got all shitty with him and he was taken to one side; he then mentioned about the plane not going into the Pentagon, coz he'd seen this DVD I'd given him, and he was arrested and taken away for over 8 hours. They kept on grilling him, asking if he was for or against America; I can't remember the whole story, it was better when he told it, but the place is fucking crazy if you ask me.

Just don't mention the war (on terror)!

Don't worry you're going to love it, NY is an amazing city. :D

To add to the already good list of suggested things to do:
See the view from the top of the Empire State Building.
OK that's very touristy, but still a cool experience.
