Please tell me I'm not going mad......but are most tv presenters & newsreaders using a northern type pronunciation when saying such words as bath, past, afternoon, aftermath etc.......I Know loads of bbc & itv stuff comes from Manchester now, but I hear people who never did it before suddenly slipping into it. For Instance one used to be called Andrew (Cahstle), and now he's Andrew (Cassel). Is this now hip & trendy or just part of the general dumbing down of television.Even the shipping forecast, which used to be a bastion of R.P. is now RIP. I hope someone else has noticed this as most of my friends can't tell the difference.......

It's not just those words. Presenters talk the same in general. It's the same on the radio - you can go from one end of the country to the other and radio DJs all talk the same way.

Welcome bull.
I'm in Australia, but I know what you're talking about from seeing an episode of Grumpy Old Men the other night where they were bitching about the exact thing you're talking about. How Newcahstle had become Newcassel etc.
The phenomenon is not isolated to the UK, there was a trend to pronounce shit the way the natives to that place pronounce it, years back here in Australia, but it kinda went out of vogue.
SBS TV here still does it a bit, since it's the world news service, but generally it died in the ass big time because TV sketch comedy shows took the piss out of the newsreaders who did it.
Probably wont be long before the same happens over there.

Maybe they can't notice it because they're hypnotized? ;P
Well, I don't know about those tv shows you mention here, but I get the feeling that newsreaders are actually trying to hipnotize people just so they can believe what they're saying.. or maybe I'm just paranoid.

Speaking of an Austalian vocal influence (who was? Me!! :D ) I remember that when 'Neighbours' hit our shores, all the kids in the country were raising their tone at the end of a sentance. God it got my tits. It hit the press and a kerfuffle was generated.
What goes around comes around, and now it must be a northern England influance. Thats all.
Tom.

What a shame, people from Manchester being allowed to speak on the television- this should not be allowed not happen! Could we start a petition? I don't think people from the North of England should have the right to speak on the television or radio- don't they know their place?
P.S. Screw the South! :D

Just having some banter mate! :D
I know exactly what you mean, I've noticed the decline in 'standards' over the years; you do make a valid point. :) Honestly. :)

Regional accents are the big thing on telly these days. It's a good thing, IMO, as not everybody speaks the olde worlde BBC English from Alexandra Palace... :)

Oh dear, sorry- I always joke around like that... although we Northerners aren't all THAT bad- surely? :D
There has been a marked decline in voice-over standards- but I think that is more to do with a marked decline in standards across the board- including society in general. I don't really think it has anything to do with accent, more to do with presentational style, and articulation. Although a Northerner myself, I do have a very good 'reading voice'- and a fairly 'neutral' accent. I really do think that I'd make for a good voice-over artiste- but alas (poor Yorick), I do not have the necessary 'connections'! :-/
Welcome to the board anyway! :)

Speaking in a northern accent is a sign of being dumbed down is it?! Cheeky git!

Have any of lot been in London lately? The cockney accent has almost gone. All the young kids talk with this strange mixture of West Indian rasta talk and Asian bangla sort of. It's horrible to listen to. The ordinary London accent has disappeared among schoolkids.

Well, isn't that rather ironical, given the apparent disdain for Northern accents? :D
