I rung those Tax Credits people today to update our apllication so we wouldn't get overpaid. They weren't interested in my earnings until they knew the exact details of my Wife's small part time job, even though she has told them about it when she started in March and again when she recieved her first payslip six weeks later. Somehow though this information doesn't exist on their systems and we have to work it our all over again. Now if I had tried that trick when I was self-employed with my tax returns I'm sure they wouldn't have excepted it as an excuse!
It bugs me because the people who rely on tax credits are the ones most likely to suffer when things go tits up. The system is designed to make people reliable on the system it also discourages people from standing on their own.
It is such a complicated system that I'm sure very few people truly understand it. I wonder if Mr Brown himself does. Then again he loves complex bureaucratic policies. Also, he keeps carping on about the enviroment, so why do they send a Tax Credits letter to me and an exact copy of one to my wife when we both live at the same address? What a waste!
Just imagine what it will be like when Identity cards are introduced;
"Sorry whoever you are, you are not on our system so you don't exist"
