I think Google is a great company, even though I suspect that there are fat communication lines going from many of Google's servers to NSA mainframes. Maybe even legally so. I use many products from both Google and Microsoft, two giants that I feel I can trust enough, but it's important that agencies like CIA and NSA can be trusted too, and that is something to keep an eye on.

Everything you do on the internet is logged. EVERYTHING. It is done using IP addresses. :D :D :D It was set up that way. All the Google/NSA and whatever other stories in the news are smoke screens. However just because it is being logged doesn't mean that humans are going through that massive amount of data logs.

Some people say that they don't mind that their activities are being logged since they have nothing to hide. But that could be a too trusting stance. What if some organization or government uses the logged information against you, for example if they find you inconvenient, EVEN WHEN YOU HAVE DONE NOTHING UNLAWFUL AND HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE. They can give information about your bank accounts or credit cards to criminal Mafia type organizations they cooperate with, and to bring you down, these criminal organizations can use the information about your bank accounts, credit cards, passwords, user names, etc, to steal from you. Or they can do bad things and then blame you for doing them since they can emulate your surfing behavior to such degree that even professional analyzers will not be able to tell the difference when examining the Web logs.

it took me a little while to understand the implications of google's ipo opening at $100 a share, but this is it: data mining. even if you're credit card numbers are secure, google can tell all kinds of things about you by matching your id info, your age, your location, with psychodemographic/'lifestyles' data. it's a marketers wet dream.
the relational database programs on supercomputers are sophisticated enough that the only human interface that's required is to punch in the search parameters on the keyboard.
we're well on the way to the kind of 'personal advertising' that they demonstrated in the movie 'minority report'. yuch! :(

IMO, relevant ads are good. But when it comes to personal advertising I think there should be an option that allows the user to inactivate that feature.

You are right this is their web and they don't want peope to use it as a weapon against them. Some people hate it when you say all forums are full of shills because they aren't them and are trying to talk to others who are studying the same material they are. It's a mix. The web is full of real people trying to talk to each other and the agents trying to kill all threads and forums that could go to a higher level.
