View Full Version : Should Animated Gifs be Allowed?

This is something I feel very strongly about because I believe this forum is a serious forum which is generally inhabited by intelligent people. As far as I am concerned the use and very often overuse of animated gifs changes the whole vibe of a forum.

I am sure many of you have visited forums where they were used. Little angel4u posts a row of five smiling gifs to her friend babe121 who then posts back 10 to show her appreciation. Not to feel left out hunkyguy decides to show his love by posting 10 lines of beating hearts to show how much he really really loves them.

I mean come on we are adults here aren't we?

Can we also ban "People who talk a load of hippie new age nonsense" ?

When I first came here I hated the look of the place; big signatures, coloured fonts etc... then after a while I liked them because it showed so much more about each poster... people were being creative and now I really enjoy each individuals posting style, it shows their personality.

Recently people were talking about animated emoticons and I thought "fuck no, not those bloody things" then less than 24 hours after they were posted I was using them. They are fun and quite appropriate in some places... I do feel able to express myself better now.

Aren't you the one who complained about the photo thread being on the forum? It's funny that you are putting so much time into telling others what to do and complaining... start up some serious threads and put some energy there if that is what you want to do.

I didn't like the photo thread cos it wasn't my cup of tea, so I didn't click on it. Too easy. Last night I got involved for some fun... you know fun? Humour, have a laugh?

Try kickin' back with a big fat spliff and open up your cerabral cortex, hypothalamus and crown chakra... you may see things in a different light. http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/5008/jointun9.gif

I suppose that's hippie shit to people like heretic. Hey if you wanna label people hippies fine... I'm sure no one labels you a 'conspiracy theorist' out there.

Where attention goes, energy flows.

On second thoughts, if the place gets over run with 'em, then yeah lets get rid of 'em. But why not wait and see?

There is no need to pass a law. Animated gifs can be turned off.

Find out how to do so with your browser.

You might try searching Google for "disable animated gifs" + the name of your browser.

I cant see a huge prob with gifs at all, infact they can be quite expressive. I dont use them all the time only occasionally, but it can be a bit of fun.

As Graflok says, if you dont like them and the offend....just turn them off.

I have found the peeing man thread one of the funniest yet, all that laughter...one little peeing man gif...:p

Thanks for that graflok.

I don't want to come across as a killyjoy but I think the (over) reliance on them just makes the standard of discussion decline in much the same way text speak makes the poster appear lazy or dumbed down..

Hey pollock, what about colours?......especially GREEN ;)

Sorry truth....I'm through hijacking your thread.

On a more serious note, I do take your point, and at times people do go a little over-board with the emoticons. My hope is that when the novelty wears off, their occasional or less frequent use will be acceptable to all users....because if not over-done, they really can be quite fun, even when discussing the more serious topics.....if they're used appropriately.

No they should be banned, they slow the forum down. It's painful at times trying to connect to this forum.

I think they are a lot of fun and should be available for the light hearted, fun threads, of which we have a few :p

I would hope that people would have enough sense not to use them inappropriatley when discussing something in a serious thread.

If someone was using insulting emoticons, one would imagine they would be dealt with in the same way as insulting words. I like words too, tc but I sometimes find it offensive the way some people speak to each other.
