Police catch man after he beheads girlfriend on Greek island

Police shot a man five times after he allegedly killed and beheaded his girlfriend on the Greek island of Santorini on Sunday.

Athanassios Arvanitis, a cook at a local restaurant, fled the crime scene in a patrol car, but a chase ended when police shot him five times. He was undergoing surgery at an island hospital.

Neighbours said that following a heated argument, Arvanitis beheaded his girlfriend's dog with a butcher knife and then killed and beheaded 25-year-old Adamantia Karkali, a teacher in a local village.

An official said when a policeman tried to handcuff Arvanitis, he knifed the officer and flung the woman's head into a patrol car. Arvanitis then took off in a second patrol car and ran over a motorcycle before he was caught.

That's a tough one, I understand perfectly what you mean, but these stories do need to be reported (in my opinion)- it's a callous, and repugnant crime- and as such, cannot be 'swept under the carpet'. I think the big questions are: Are these assailants mind-controlled operatives? Are these sacrifices prior to the Olympics??

I don't read the gory details though, and would never want to be 'desensitised' to such horrific, diabolically inhumane events.
