in my experience spyware hits at random even without browsing websites.
what protection do you use if any?
adaware for example is not enough to keep thing out. these programs are better at scanning your pc.
I say you need an updated antivirus/firewall solution. I have tried various combinations and I never have problems.

Some so called Anti-spyware programs are actually spyware programs, you have far too many spyware program there to start with, they could actually conflict and make them ineffective, this may be the reason why you are getting spyware. I would suggest you get rid of all those anti-spyware programs, and download AVG anti spyware, for a free firewall I suggest zonealarm free, and for an anti-virus AVG anti virus free edition. I would also suggest adaware SE for Adware. This is the perfect defence. As an option you might also consider downloading Rootkit revealer from systernals to check for rootkits. Note: The current version shows Two false positives on scan, in HKLM/passwords/secrets/policies/ these are just that, harmless errors.

A decent external router is ideal too.

Sorry but AVG and ad-aware are rubbish.. I've got far more advanced protection than what you suggested tho i'm by no means having a go, thanks for the reply..

No problem, your choice but as for them being rubbish a recent in depth survey in a highly rated computer magazine found all the free programs I mentioned to be as effective as the best paid for protection. In particular AVG anti-virus rates among the best anti-virus protection out there, and that include paid for protection.

you definitely have too many programs. One good firewall and at best backed up by some uptodate antivirus is what works. Anything but that is useless in my experience. This isn't about this program can detect this and that can detect that on your pc. It's about keeping the damn thing out in the first place - guarding your ports - and in case it comes in anyway prevent it from connecting to a remote server.

but maybe you're gone already as I just read in your other thread?
You forgot to mention why and what you found the forum to be lacking, do you perhaps prefer/recommend another to this one?

Geez, I come on this thread thinking it was about spywear, you know the kind of classy shiny shirts women love men to wear that have little cameras in so you can secretly film their boobies, and instead all I see is a bunch of geek talk.

Way to ruin my Friday night.

I've been using Zone Alarm, Adaware and AVG for a number of years now on two machines at home and I've not had issues. Decent products that do what they say on the tin in my experience.
