Well, I guess the good thing is, you certainly don't have citizens policing each other. Although most people would probably think that the poor guy forgot his combination or something else. I had a friend who was maced for his bike once. He had just dropped 2500 on it.

Bike thefts are on the rise... clearly something must be done. If only we had more cameras in the street to catch these criminals in the act... now of course people could not react in time, but if we had a data-base that has everyone's face in it, and an automated system to identified crimes being commited, match the face of the bike theif and issue a warrent for his arrest these bike theifs could be quickly and effeciently caught.
On top of it, since we have them on tape commiting the crime we can just skip with the pesky trial. We know he is guilty, so there is no need for a jury of his peers determine that. We can just go straight to sentencing.
Don't you WANT to protect your bike? What this sounds like a bad idea... you must be a bike theif then... or a thought criminal. Only criminals have something to hide.
Sigh. I can see a lot of people I know who would say, "Hmmmm he has a good point..." unfortunately.

Wow, excellent point dt! I say we get this underway immediately. Ugh..i hate that mentality. "Only criminals have something to hide"
Or...bikes could just be free for everyone and then stealing them wouldn't be an issue...
Or...you could hire a security guards at bike racks. :D
Or...I've run out of ideas.

Just don't ride a bike that looks as though it's expensive enough to be nicked - I do (a fully functional but aging mountain bike), and nobody's ever had it away, and I just use an old bit of fence chain and a padlock.
You don't really need anything flash to go cycling in town or off-road, and you certainly don't need any of that designer crap spandex outfit either.

Maybe be polite and tell them to have it, say it doesnt even work. Shout police...your under arrest and run after them. Act like the joker, a real fucked up freak. Reverse psychology. The outcome where advocacy of one course of action persuades another person to do the opposite.

But...i like my flashy purple spandex! :( :p Kiddin. I swear I don't own any purple spandex...they're pink :D. :
Yeah...I drive a 1984 nissan sentra...i never worry about it being stolen...worry free! :D
However, I had a 10$ mountain bike stolen from me that I got at a garage sale...
So thievery is not limited to shiny bikes.

I wrote a similar thread at http://northernrailways.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1082&sid=d4bad4892249264c338ff2cfadf24c16 and sadly nowadays even if you have a bike that`s not really much some bugger will still want to nick it
Saying that though I think lockers are better than racks.

Ride a bike someones doing you a favour by robbing. Tell them have it, it doesnt even work. Reverse psychology. The outcome where advocacy of one course of action persuades another person to do the opposite.
although usually the thievery occurs when you're not around...you could leave a note though!

Make it look like a police bike with some sort of new world order tracking device. Big Brother is watching you.

Mountain bikes and car stereos were always the currency for the druggies back in the day.
I remember my first car, was a shoddy Ford Sierra - it got stolen twice but I was such a cheap skate there was only about £1.50 worth of diesel in it each time and the poor thieves got about 2 miles down the road before they ran of petrol :D. But the buggers stole my banging stereo and amplifier  and wrecked my lock. I had to start it with a screwdriver until it died.
More recently I had shoddy Peugeot diesel and I would deliberately leave it unlocked in the hope someone criminally deranged would steal it and I could claim the insurance back. But damn, no takers - the thieves have got more sophisitcated. The only people who took any notice were the cops. I found out one night when I was pulled up by them via a number plate recognition camera becuase the cops had flagged it as abanoned .
Seeker + pink spandex = shudders :D

haha...and a small flashing light to look like it's equipped with an alarm. and put a sticker on it from a home security company.
its like those stores that have all the stickers plastered no their walls saying "Smile you're on camera" when there's not a camera in sight...

Just to play devils advocate what if you saw someone doing this stopped them asked them what they are doing and they said they had lost their key to the lock and had to cut their lock..
are you going to restrain them and call the police? It could well be true I had to do that very thing when I lost my key no one cared whilst I cut my lock and I wouldnt have cared if anyone had stopped me either, but this is the problem really people never really know in a world with lies.
Like today a child of about 8 begged me for money, I knew it was likely his parents where somewhere nearby and making him do it and they probably pull in about £100+ with the scam but I gave him a fiver anyway because how can you really be sure?

Nah never said restrain them and call the police. I said shout police and run after them. Have a scuffle and pretend they got away. No police required, it's called acting. If their innocent they wont run, unless your a bad actor off course. They might bullshit you at first but if your convincing they will think twice.

it's NYC, interfere with what they are doing and if they are a thief, you will probably be assaulted. One should never directly 'Stare' at someone going about 'unusual' business for 'Too Long', an imprecise amount of time, but exceeding it may get your ass in a jam, requiring fight or flight.
In NYC I use a motorcycle cover on my motorbike, and it never gets molested, I was thinking there may be a need for bycycle covers for the same purpose.
i'm 54 and I got a canondale F5 this spring, Black!!!! Woo Hoo!!!
happy and safe riding!

Maybe if I wasn't a police officer I would be arsed.

tptb could stop bike theft anytime they wanted. Just run a few scare stories where vigilantes had booby-trapped bikes with spring-loaded spikes in the seat-post.
