I've looked at those before and definitely want one. Another thing I have been thinking about a lot is concentrated solar electricity generation. It wouldn't necessarily require photovoltaics. A steam engine can be run off of concentrated sunlight. Perhaps it could run on salt water and produce distilled water and salt as a side benefit.

Yeah you can make them out of satellite dishes :)

I havent got one but I am definitely gonna be making a couple of them. One out of an umbrella and the other from a windshield shader from the Pound Shop. Also I would like to make one from a satelitte dish but I dont have a satellite dish unforunately.

I`m surprised I`ve not thought of getting a foil windshield shader myself to try something like that :o maybe because I don`t really like cars (or rather most motorists ;))

In that "Solar Evil Genius" book I mentioned in another thread there is a project for a parabolic heater using just an old satellite dish from junk, mirrors cut into square pieces, adhesive and that`s pretty much it. Will have to try that too sometime :)

This is a great idea & thanks for sharing steevo:) But would it work in the UK with our definite lack of sunlight, does it say what the minimum temperatures are?

Hi homebrew. Cutting mirrors into squares and placing on a satellite dish is very good info, so thanks for that :)

Hi Lookfar. I think that they would work in the UK if it was a hot summers day. Even if we can only use them in the summer, it's something. Also, just by building these things, they are gonna lead onto other projects based on the same principles. This is only the beginning. Most of the people building these things have only just learnt about it. This knowledge has been hidden from us. This technology is potentially huge (and is free). Having said all that, I wish we had more sun here in the UK :( Oh well, let's make the best of what we HAVE got :)
