Local legends and stories say they were a couple who where bitten by adder snakes and died. Seems unlikely. Another story is they were vampires what looks like bat's wings can be seen on the stone, this may just be a ghost story to keep the children out the Church yard.

It's kind of spooky looking and ideas?

The Snake part, looks like the Ouroboros symbol (above).

Until seeing your post, I hadn't looked into it and didn't know its name, but immediately recognized that I was familiar with it from the past, once seeing your photo there. Apparently it is a symbol of eternity (for obvious reasons) with the snake eating its own tail (the search words I used to get the answer). Its origins go way back, it seems. But at the moment I don't have time right now to go into further. Hopefully that will kick start your enquiry. On the grave (along with the skull symbolising physical mortality I guess) it probably simply meant death=eternity

(from within the beliefs of a certain faith, of course)

Void :)

Good theory. I had though of Ouroboros but didn't know how to spell it lol. Maybe the wings represent flying to Heaven.

Or perhaps it's - "Hey, this will keep them wondering for years" :D
Or yes, maybe - "Hey, this will keep the little mo fos well away" :p

Thanks Lemonique

Strange that only a few select gravestones have these symbols on when the others in the same Churchyard don't, wonder if these people where considered special to someone in some way.

Where is the pic taken?

Sometime the skull is used to mean the death of the ego and therefore the emergence of the spirit. The bat is held by some to be a guide through the underworld as it can get through the darkness without relying on it's eyes. The serpent eating its own tail is ouroboros, a symbol of eternity.

People often read a negative meaning into such symbols because it forces you to look strongly at your own mortality

I'd interpret that differently: the skull is everywhere you look now: just look at electricity control boxes (small grey metal boxes along pavements/roads, about 2 feet high), all musical events (especially ones that celebrate the jews/zionists - such as The Brits: the skull and crossbones was everywhere) and on flags flown in many towns, on T shirts, skull scarfs and on and on.
The skull and crossbones represents mankind's lowest, most evil aspect (yes, the outer ego, devoid of any soul or love for one another) which is the state that the human race is being driven to thanks to eating highly chemicalised food/drink, having no central spiritual core and the removal from easy access of money - essential to everyone to survive.

The Ouroubos - snake eating its tail - symbolises the self named 'elite' making their money from the opposite end of the spectrum - those who can't afford to eat/drink anything but unhealthy CRAP McDonalds and other very damaging foodstuffs and can't afford expensive university education - basically it's the Vampires getting off (whether by sacrificing humans to get their vital 'get high' hormones) on other humans.

I think those symbols are older than some of the things you mention. Why should the skull and crossbones be an evil symbol just because it creates a sense of fear in you? like I said before it makes you confront the idea of death. The skull is also a symbol of mortality.

It is that sort of interpretation that you give whch really helps to confuse the issue. All you have done is to conceal the real meaning, but if you feel that is right for you then that is what it will mean for you. Symbols can also have their subjective aspects.

I know someone who has this thing about skulls. Rings, pics - you name it anything skull themed. Although she lost her dad and boy friend. Maybe a link?
