Scottish Water has apologised for pouring millions of litres of poo into the Firth of Forth.

As someone on the BBC site suggested, maybe Thames Water could make it impossible to pump sewage into the sea.
Its a shame they couldnt pump it to Balmoral instead.

It happened to me once. The sewers got backed up, and went straight into my own back yard. It was never the same. I would not allow the kids to play in the yard after that.

I'm actually in this line of work (although not for Thames although I do know the guy in charge of their operation up here)
The reason they have emergency outfall is for exactly this type of situation. All pumping stations house at least 2 pumps which operate on a duty / standby basis, in the event of failure of both of these pumps, to prevent a backlog in the system which would result in sewage appearing in your street, the emergency outfall is used to allow the sewage to flow safest place possible, in this case, the sea. It is unfortunate that the pumps failed over the weekend as this has obviously affected the response time.
