Wow, check out the details in the panoramic on this page, its the same image that statue is in except wider.

Check the right hand area of the photo, there are water/irrigation channels or possibly foot paths, and what appear to be arranged stones in a eye/oval shape with circular stones in the middle. That looks like housing remnants to me, the blocks are all square cut !

Me thinks it's a statue from a long lost Martian city like David's been saying. It certainly doesn't seem to be a rock, which is the official source (surprise, surprise).
