My auntie doesn't want to take the stuff the doctors dish out.
Is there something safe without nasty side effects that's a proven cure or at least will help with the problem:confused:

i dont know if she already does this but if she doesnt tell her to cut out MSG (monosodium glutamate) it caused me awful migraines for years untill i read an article about it , it also mentioned cutting out cheese and chocolate but i just made sure i cut out the msg, (i dont wanna give up cheese n choc!!), its in a lot of foods...especially walkers crisps! once i cut this out the migraines went!!
another thing i have heard is Lemon Grass is meant to help migraines but i dont know in what form! and drink as much water as possible...apparently migraines are often caused by dehydration and poor diet! this has worked for me and also slowing the pace, not worrying so much about stuff, dealing with the deep down problems that had been swept under the carpet in the past.....all of this was contributing!!
i was on medication from the dr for over a year for migraines popping 3x a day everyday but it still didnt keep them away... so i did the above and i cleared them up myself!!
hope this helps....let you know if i think of anything else... i utterly sympathise with your aunt...migraines are pure torture! :(

G'day Eternal Spirit.
This could be a structural problem with an area of the spine. Seek out a chiropractor for your auntie to visit, or if she's not into that, a massage therapist, or both.
It could also be diet related, hydration of the body could be imbalanced, or a host of other reasons. The links below should be of benefit for research...

Agreed. I used to get mega headaches and I cut out diet coke (which contains aspartame and caffeine) and I've hardly had any headaches since.
Also, I've read a lot about how caffeine can cause headaches. This is a very interesting site;

Ideally lengthy Fasting should be utilised in order to cleanse the body up correctly.
Yes its true that many excitotoxins create migraines along with other useless poisonous substances out there as spoke about above. So yea certainly cut these out asap.
Mucus and Acid Causing foods should ideally be cut out and people should certainly learn the teachings of the wise Professor Arnold Ehret.
My mother used to have many migraines before I got her upon the Mucusless diet and cleanup herbs. She would suffer hard and when she did I told her about Cayenne and to try it. She found nothing better than the taking of Cayenne Pepper. So folks you can either take a Tincture, whole pepper or Powder. With the Powder put ideally 1 teaspoon within 250ml or less warm water. You may only be able to take 1/4 tsp initially. Once you understand how Cayenne works you will then understand how it works to relieve migraine.
Remember folks a toxic body is the reason for this problem in the first place. If you wish to deal with the source then please tackle the body not just the symptom like an allopathic "POISON" doctor wished he could.

My Husband suffers with migraines, he even went in hospital as they got so bad, he suffered for years. Then one day he noticed that after he had eaten onions or garlic, the headache would come on. He has cut these out and doesn't suffer as much, although there will always be something with garlic and onion in it. But it's definately cause by what you eat or don't eat in some cases.

my son and my ex suffer from migraines so i did a search and found this , wont cure you but i hoe it helps , they havent had a migraine to test it.....................this is how you do it ...........................HEADACHES:
There are several types of headache, caused by various reasons. Some are associated with organic disorders, such as kidney troubles, others are known as psychogenic, or tension headaches. Then we have the most annoying of all; the migraine headache. Many people have had relief from headaches by the use of honey. Two teaspoons taken at each meal may well prevent an attack. Another effective means is to take apple cider vinegar. Equal parts of cider vinegar and water should be placed in a small basin on the stove, allowing it to boil slowly. When the fumes begin to rise from the basin lean your head over it until the fumes are comfortably strong. Inhale for approximately 50 to 80 breaths. Generally this alleviates the headache considerably, if not entirely. hope this helps

I also occasionally get migraine headaches. If I'm able to take a painkiller while in still in the "jagged flashing light / blind in one eye" stage, and then am able to lie down in a quiet darkened room, usually the attack won't be too severe.
A few year ago, I woke up early on a Sunday morning, had my morning coffee, and bam.... I was blind in one eye and partially blind in my other one with the jagged flashing lights. The lights were growing in intensity. I couldn't will the attack away. I searched my house as best I could for some aspirin, Advil... anything. There was nothing in the house. I was in no condition to drive to a convenience store to buy a painkiller. And, even if I could have driven, by the time I got to the store, stumbled about looking for painkiller and paid for it, I would have been well past the flashing light stage and into the pain stage. If I would have called someone, by the time I explained and they arrived, it would have been too late also.
So, what to do?
Fortunately, I still had one alternative.
I've been using SpectroChrome Therapy for many years to treat a variety of illnesses and other problems (flus, colds, back pain, allergies, rashes, burns, wounds, and so on), but I never tried it with a migraine because if it didn't work, I'd be in for a very bad time. It's not really a good idea to mix S-C with other therapies, so I wouldn't use S-C and painkillers. Anyhow, I thought... "What choice do I have?"
I went back into my bedroom and fortunately the lamp was already set up. I only had to change the lens. I put in the combo for the color purple, aimed it at my pillow, darkened the room, and rested there with the purple rays aimed at my head. The blindness cleared up and I thought to myself, "Oh boy... here it comes!" With me, after the flashing light stage, I have a brief time of calm when I actually feel OK and think maybe it won't hit me this time, and then out of nowhere, the PAIN. Anyhow, I kept laying there quietly, but the pain never came. I wasn't nauseous, or weak. I just felt calm. I stayed under the light for about 45 minutes, and the got up and watched a little TV. I decided to keep my activity light for the morning
(why push it?). I cut my grass that afternoon.
For those not familiar with it, SpectroChrome is a healing system developed that uses "tuned light rays". The theory is, if physiological ( and maybe psychological) problems can manifest in the colors of the aura, maybe affecting the aura with special frequencies can affect the body. Like the relationship between magnetism and electric current. Electric current will create a magnetic field; A wire drawn across a a magnetic field will cause an electric current.
If you are interested in SpectroChrome, this is THE place to start...

Good luck!
-Joe
Btw, I use the glass lenses. They really do seem more powerful than the gels, IMHO. But, the Dinshah Health Society only recommends the gels because they've been tested to verify that they are accurate to the original S-C colors.

I hope I can find the courage to try convincing friends and family about how to avoid prescribed medications. It just seems so impossible even before I try. Everyone seems to think that whatever the doctors say, is the final answer and the most healthy way of getting better. Why not just get cured though? Today it seems our believe in actually getting cured of something for good, is impossible. ;ost people today who find a way to get over a mental disorder of some kind, a "genetic" disease of some kind, allergies (or how is that spelled?), they all think it is some kind of miracle. It is what I would call finding a better and more natural way to get rid of whatever problem we might have.
Medications: I believe, that no matter what the effect of a medication is, our body will react to it this way -
Sleeping pills: Do not need to slow down thoughts and impulses in the body on its own.
Pain killers: Making yourself feel less pain will probably make the pain feel alot worse next time you feel pain without using pain killers.
Mind "numbing" medicine: The mind might have a much harder time getting to a stable mental state than it had before drugs were used to to the mind under control.

Hi Eternal Spirit, Is Aunty on Hormone Replacement Therapy? that may not help.
In my case my Migraines were brought on by smoking too much (due to really bad stress), and tummy troubles. Turned out I had a grumbly appendix, once it was taken out (at 57 yrs of age :D) my headaches went away.
I also am a great believer in keeping 'regular', (especially after the tummy probs)
so I make sure I get plenty of fibre in the diet. I Use Oat bran on my rolled oats, also psyllium bought cheaply from the health shop. I also eat large amounts of fruit and veges. I have cut out red meat, and I have yoghurt every day.
Hope she improves soon....migraines are the pits!
Lemonique
Rhodiola Rosea could help, it's an aptogen with many uses and I've read that it can be helpful for headaches.

Tackling Migraine Headaches
http://www.snwcenter.com/images/blkreports/blaylock_anxiety_24.pdf
• Most important is to avoid all excitotoxins. After all, research indicates that this is the central cause of the problem and explains why some anti-seizure medications work. This means avoid all MSG, aspartame, hydrolyzed protein, isolated protein, protein drinks, soy products and soy proteins, Portabella mushrooms, sodium or calcium caseinate, stock, broth and natural flavoring. All of these are major triggers for migraine.
• Increase your magnesium intake. It takes a long time for oral magnesium to raise depleted brain levels to normal, as much as 6 months. Yet, relief can begin within hours. Vegetables are high in magnesium, so increase your vegetable intake. To assure maximum intake, I would suggest taking magnesium citrate or citrate/malate, two capsules three times a day between meals. If you develop diarrhea, start with two capsules a day and slowly over a week’s time increase the dose.
• I have found a close relation between migraine headaches and reactive hypoglycemia. Low blood sugar depletes magnesium and increases brain excitotoxin levels (glutamate). Avoid all sugar-especially soft drinks. Drink purified water. You can empty a capsule of magnesium into your water. Including beans with your meals slows carbohydrate absorption. Also, avoid all potatoes except sweet potatoes. Irish potatoes are strongly hypoglycemic.
• Riboflavin: Take 500 mg. three times a day to significantly reduce migraine attacks, by protecting against excitotoxicity.
• Anti-inflammatory flavonoids are important. That’s because inflammation of the involved blood vessels plays a major role in the disorder. The best are curcumin, quercetin, hesperidin, feverfew and nettle. All should be taken with meals.
• Free radicals also play a role and are closely connected to inflammation and excitotoxicity. Increase your intake of natural vitamin E (Unique-E 800 IU a day), magnesium ascorbate (1,000 mg. twice a day between meals) and take a multivitamin/mineral supplement daily. White tea (decaffeinated) will also reduce inflammation, calm nerves and it is a powerful antioxidant.
• DHA component of fish oils also reduce inflammation and reduce migraine attacks. Take 200 mg. twice a day. You can mix the quercetin and curcumin with the oil to increase absorption. Keep the DHA in the refrigerator.
If you follow this program to the letter, you will either completely relieve your migraine or dramatically reduce the severity. I have had great success, even in the most resistant cases. The drugs used to treat migraine are often very dangerous and can increase the risk of a stroke or heart attack.

I used to get terrible migraines, white sparkly blindness, intense headache, sensitivity to smell touch hearing sight taste. Initially the only thing i could do was to go into a dark room put a cold towel on my forehead and just try to relax, maybe take a pain killer. But after suffering from them for 2 years or so I began to recognize a pattern. Often I got migraines during the winter months,(but not always) and often that was when many things came together which would trigger it. These were, lack of exercise, being indoors too much, chronic stress - almost always because of school related bullshit- eating poorly, and strangely overcast greyish white sky days. I often noticed that days when it was that greyish-white cloudy overcast color I would look out and the brightness and color of it triggered the migraine. So it is important to look at what triggers or causes the headache before taking an approach to treat. And any cure- herbal, big pharma, any alternative therapies, will still only treat the symptom. For me, the best ways to treat migraines is to prevent them. Get regualr exercise, be outdoors, and eat as best you can keeping away from man made chemicals, and processed food. But if you do get a migraine the best remedies Ive found have been to make a tea with a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, then 8 ounces boiling water. That will usually fix it. Also taking some deep breathes up through the nose stretching your arms out and upwards while rising up on the toes to stand tip toed helps. There was also one time I had a migraine during the summer, another day of white-grey overcast, where I went to a quite place covered my eyes so no light got through, then I layed down and calmed myself, much like a meditation and I kept focusing on healing the spot where the pain came from. I could feel the blood and energy and I tried to smooth the flow of it with deep breathing. While in this state apparently an hr went by, but when I awoke no pain, atleast it was very little greatly almost completely diminished and all the blurriness was gone, I took it easy for the rest of the day. Hope this helps

This product (http://www.new-chapter.com/product/product.lasso?-Search=Action&-Table=P_Web&-Database=NewChapter&-KeyValue=141) has worked well for every kind of headaches I've had but I don't know if it'll be strong enough for a truly terrible migraine. Caffeine can also improve headaches and migraines... brew a strong tea or coffee once in a while.

drink enough water. Its the most important step in being healthy.
Drink before you're thirsty - if you're thirsty, you're dehydrated.
If you ain't peeing clear each and every time you go then drink more water.
When I started doing that headaches stopped for me altogether. Headaches are a combination of dehydration and stress in your neck and head muscles. Find a friend and teach each other how to give a really relaxing head massage. Then you can always sort each other out!
Sex also makes headaches go away, but that's just not British darnit! :D

This can be a major player in migraines, basically its caused by toxins being given off.
As posters have already siad, allergies need to be addressed along with seeking a professional who can check for this condition. Candidias is a pain to be rid of but can cause some real headaches, particualrly if you have inadvertantly not eaten the allergic food as often headaches are also a symptom of toxic die off.

i would stress the importance of exercise as a major component to all around health. Detox diets, fasting and such just wont clean you out like a gold ol sweat. That what is important here, you need to move the body to push the fluids around. That will clean you out reset the organs and the whole system. Im not in any way trying to tell people not to fast, im just saying, fasting should be a lower priority to good amounts of exercise and drinking lots of water. Next should come clean eating, then other things such a fasting and what not. I think doing things like that will get you optimal health. A good amount of protein in the diet - high quality like eggs, meat- will also help provide the building material for all the enzymes and such that will help clean out the body.

New studies on migraines have proven structural differences in the brain. People who suffer chronic migraine headaches have a thicker somatosensory cortex. The study also shows that migraines can induce changes in the brain.

I suggest you get down to a quality Chiropacter and have any misalignments corrected. Also take 5ml of a strong Cayenne Pepper tincture or put a teaspoon of quality powder in 250ml of warm water and drink this. That should most times stop migraines.

This is certainly true. If I do catch it in time, I can usually prevent it. Sometimes, though, I wake up in the middle of the night and it is already full blown. At this point, nothing seems to help.
I haven't had one lately. I think weather is a factor when I do get one.
