Came across this earlier today:

Allen and Gates share interests in such areas as alternative energy and brain research, and Allen said he could see them collaborating on future projects.

There are many places where biology and computing are coming together," Gates said to the roomful of scientists, having opened his talk by joking that the lowest grade he ever got in college (a C) was in organic chemistry.

He spoke about a number of the projects at Microsoft Research, including one led by David Heckerman using software designed as a spam filter to seek out potential weaknesses in the AIDS virus that might provide clues for a vaccine. He said he remained excited about the fruits of this bio-and-bits marriage.

Asked last week if he intended to spend more time pursuing this long-held fascination with bioinformatics, Gates said he does intend to dig deeper into that arena for the foundation.

"I'll be learning more about the aspects of biology that affect the foundation's work," he said. For example, he said, solving key problems in immunology could provide the kind of breakthroughs needed to prod pharmaceutical companies to invest more in long-neglected problems of the developing world such as tuberculosis or malaria.
