A 12-year-old white schoolboy is among 120 people dealt with by police in a new project combating Islamic extremism, it has been revealed.

The child, who has not been named, was reported by his school in West Yorkshire after he was found circulating horrifying video clips of terrorists beheading Westerners.

Sick films were distributed to classmates on their mobile phones, prompting his teacher to contact the authorities. The 12-year-old is now being handled under a scheme known as the Channel Project.

Three police forces are piloting the initiative in a bid to build links with the community, including Muslims, and gather information about possible extremists.

West Yorkshire Chief Constable Sir Norman Bettison will reveal more details about the project at the Association of Chief Police Officers' annual conference in Liverpool.

Sir Norman said: "The white child that we are working with has been downloading Jihadist beheading videos and circulating them around school.

"That was bad enough, but he also has an unnatural interest in guns and weapons. He had come to our attention and we are working with him and his father and his school."

The Chief Constable said the project, which is being operated by his own force, the Metropolitan Police and Lancashire Police, had been operating for nine months.

The number of suspects so far uncovered was "higher than expected", he added.

Already 124 people have been referred to the police and other agencies for attention by schools, community leaders, mosques and others. Sir Norman admitted none of the 124 has been prosecuted so far because officers are attempting to avoid using anti-terror laws against anyone identified by the scheme.

I agree with 'Wakeupworld'. This child's curiosity has gone extreme. Having an intellect not hold enough to compensate for an understanding of the meaning and consequence of the material he is distributing to his school mates, is the issue here.

This young fellow is deliberately seeking out this material as it seems it has become a social crutch upon which he has become dependent to bolster his own image in the eyes of others. Left unchecked, there is no knowing what type of adult he will become; desensitized, sociopathic, perhaps even, psychopathic. Certainly, at such a young age, he will be unable to assimilate this material into his consciousness, and remain a balanced human-being.

These murders are filmed by the killers in order to inflict as much psychological pain and fear on the family and friends, and compatriots of the victim as possible...it is an act apropos to the enemy sending back the head of the messenger. I hear what you're saying.. but, kids have been desensitised to these images for so long now, pick up a paper, switch on the TV.. it's all there! And why the hell are these clips available for 12 year olds to download anyway when much less offensive stuff is banned/censored? It's another PRS stunt!

We don't know if this picture-collecting had become an obsession.

The article is made to produce a knee-jerk reaction = pro or con.

To be sure, if you have a vivid imagination, you could see that a disturbed child, one prone to violence, could be USED, brainwashed, manipulated now that his proclivities have been SPOTTED by the higher-ups.

I am intrigued by the tense of the statement - - he had come to our attention. It would make you think that the lad had ALREADY come to the attention of the police, before the incident(s) with the emailed photographs or short video clips.

Now, how was that? Where did he get the clips? Perhaps he had been visiting Jihadist websites. I'll bet his online visits were duly noted, tracked, etc. by the authorities. I am not judging the boy, just stating it as a fact.

I am sure that teachers are given a set of instructions for how to deal with possible threats to other students and to the school. In the US, this would certainly follow in light of infamous school shootings such as Columbine.

I am quite frankly surprised that the teacher contacted the authorities directly, and that it was not the "principal" or "headmaster" or some such SCHOOL authority. (Is she, as Julia Middleton would have it, leading beyond authority?)



I say, where are the parents? Well, I see that the authorities are working with them NOW. Hmmmm.

As noted again, we are just given the bare facts of the story, which makes it even more inflammatory. It is the sort of issue which is polarizing.

We all looked forward to the computer age, we are all guilty of placing our children in front of the worlds biggest library, for them to learn.

The internet is what it is, many parents have gone out and bought their kids computers, given access to the internet and who knows how many, in their own bedrooms.

My Point is...for those of us who take reasonable care to bring our kids up in a safe environment, taking care not to control, but be watchful.....there are those that don't, and their children will have access to what you and me and everybody who uses the internet.....take a word...any word and type it in google, then hit search, not long down the list, how ever you wish to describe the results (of which some people call the seedy side) it will have links to porn, murder...and everything else you would expect from a library (internet) facts, fiction...in all it's glory.

Going back to this kid at school, he may have been showing questionable material, but only i suspect... to the willing, and the chances are, the willing could have just been the the type of kids who were protected by caring parents?

“He spoke openly of his wish to be a sniper and spoke of his curiosity of what it would be like to kill someone.”

Sir Norman described him as an “angelic looking boy” whose police mugshot showed a fair-haired child so short that his head was barely in the frame of the camera.

“He is at risk of being a violent young man and a threat to society,” the chief constable said.

“He is not a Muslim. He is not driven by ideology – he is too young to spell the word.

“But he is being influenced and intoxicated by the imagery and appeal of Jihadist and other internet violence.”

Sir Norman, speaking at a conference of police chiefs in Liverpool, said that the internet helped to peddle the “virus”.

He added: “We know that there is a latent sense of grievance in the minds of many young people which, in the right conditions, can lead to the desire for violent expression.

“What happens if they learn how to build and deploy an explosive device that will cause mass casualties? Or if core al-Qa’eda can get their hands on these people to act as mules for a more sophisticated attack?”

The police chief urged every parent – particularly Muslims – to address the issue of extremism with their children.

“The al-Qa’eda brand of violent extremism continues to spread like a virus infecting young minds,” he said.

“Every young Muslim will be introduced to ideas around al-Qa’eda and a ‘global struggle’. I don’t see how you can avoid it in 2008.”

“We are not talking about criminal actions. We are talking about vulnerable kids.”

Two other cases highlighted by the senior policeman were Muslim youths, known only as NH and YH, who were both 15 when they were reported by their communities because they were showing extremist and racist tendencies.

New figures revealed that 36 people were convicted of terror-related offences last year and 31 have been convicted already this year, with several trials ongoing. Around 140 are on remand awaiting trial.

Bob Quick, the head of Scotland Yard's Counter Terrorism Command, said: “The threat has not lessened in any way to that we have seen in the past four summers.”

The fact that he was showing this horrific stuff to people though may be cause for concearn. I saw one of those videos and it was probably the most disturbing thing I have ever seen on the net ( thats saying something ) and would go a long way to not see it again.
