Simple question-Jesuits

I've been reading and watching presentations about the Jesuits and how they are punishing those who once expelled them.A few questions have been bothering me quite a while:

If the Jesuit order is/were so powerful and well connected, how was it possible to expel them in the first place? And wouldn't those who got rid of them be on their guard against future "invasions"? I mean the thought that they "worked their way up" back in absolute power in those countries that expelled them, seems a bit too complicated, doesn't it?

You should become aware of the film 'The Count of Monte Cristo' which really is the story of the Society of Jesus.
