Sen. Rockefeller Calls For New Vision of Homeland Security

US Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) says homeland security efforts must be "more focused and coherent" with the next
president's administration. Rockefeller spoke to MetroNews during a two-day Homeland Security Summit Monday in
Morgantown.
"It's been sort of the stepchild of the whole post-9/11 era," Rockefeller told said in a phone interview. "People say, 'Well
we haven't been attacked', but that's not the way we should be thinking."Senator Rockefeller says the Department of
Homeland Security is by far the weakest effort that came from 9/11. "It doesn't have the money because the
administration (Bush administration) doesn't have the money to give," he said.
Rockefeller supports Illinois Senator Barack Obama for President. Obama has promoted spending more money on
efforts to secure the home front. The senator says he's been impressed with progress made in West Virginia despite
funding difficulties. He says private businesses have come up with their own security efforts. "The private sector are
usually people who have solutions they can offer, technologies they can offer homeland security, but they are not
responsible for homeland security," Rockefeller said. "The government is responsible for homeland security. "More than
300 first responders, health care professionals, security experts and government leaders were part of the summit. It was
the third summit the senator has held in the years following 9/11.
