Need help. Im on a network. I think someone is messing with my computer. I apparently have received messages and or sent (via messenger services), which I have not. Anyone know how this can be done?? And how to block it?? It has cost me my love. A dear price one might say and I tell you its killing me. Its over and done with but I need to know how to protect my pc in the future from this sort of thing. I think I know who may be behind it and their motive. Too late now for my love relationship yet must do something. I cant let someone get away with such a vile act. Please anyone who can help Im in your debt. Cheers

Sad thing is I only know 2 people capable of this shit. I suspect them both. One is an ex so motive maybe you will never have a loving relationship, the other the lover who wants to dump me and so what a good way to do so, makes him out as the hurt one. Im soo confused.

Hi graf, well i have a friend who has my passwords to skype and messenger. Said i recieved a message this morning from skype. However i didnt have anything. then around midday one popped up from a person i blocked. Then says i have four people of the same name and from the same location. That i searched for them. I have not. Im on a network. I live at my ex's house temporarily. So im suspecting that person. I think they wouldnt do this but now not sure. Either way has made me look like ive lied about something. I havent. I lost the relationship due to this. I want to find who is doing it. Thank you Cheers though im down and out at the moment

Well, I'm not sure I understand everything that happened but I suggest changing your passwords as a first step and not giving them to anyone. :)

i am not experienced on networks by any means, but i will offer my thoughts...

...you don't say who is the administrator of the network, if the admin is not who you suspect then i would suggest you approach that person for assistance

...and also, it may be that through social engineering* someone has accessed your password, if that is the case i would strongly recommend that you change and use a 'stronger' password that will be hard to 'guess'

...also i wouldn't rule out keylogging**

...i apologise for not being able to offer more assistance...

**Keystroke logging - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

EDIT: i see you responded whilst i typed the above...

...so, i assume your ex is the admin of the network?..and also i would not suggest giving out passwords..even to someone you trust, as they may inadvertently disclose the password via the methods i disclosed above

...yes, samanvaya means harmony, but it is not my name...

:p

first of all let me say this...

...if your lover is worthy of your love, he will 'see' and believe you

...also look at it this way, there is a reason for this happening, you may not see it now but you will in the end (hindsight being the wonderful thing that it is, it gives birth to understanding)

...i know it's a cliche but...don't worry, all will be well

...wish i could help out more, but as i said earlier, i have (extremely) limited knowledge of networks, however i will say this

...as has been suggested before, change your passwords also, remain strong in yourself with the knowledge that you have acted in good faith and above all remain detached (http://cowpi.com/quotes/detachment/)

...take care and i wish you all the best...

I know you probably don't want to hear this BUT if the love is that fragile, I think it is best you find out now before you go half way across the world.

This is so easy to fix. Run your network through a router with a built in firewall (a good one, some are hackable) and then encrypt your network. I haven't been hacked in years.

Hi,

If you're a Windows user I'd recommend you to switch to Linux(like Ubuntu or Kubuntu).Kubuntu is a bit more user friendly. And it's totally freeware.I've been using Ubuntu for almost a year and couldn't imagine going back to Windows. No security problems whatsoever.Did you know that the NSA has been involved in developing Windows Vista? That makes me suspicious.

For Kubuntu see here: http://www.kubuntu.org/
And Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/

Hope this helps,

First of all, have you got a good firewall on your PC, I use Zone Alarm (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/home.jsp)which is free.... you must have a decent firewall as this stops people being able to hack into your PC.
also go into ...system..>> Remote >>> and then make sure that "Remote Assistance" and "Remote Desktop" are both UNticked.

after this really there should be no way for people to hack into your PC unless they are really heavy bods, which unless you have a video of some ETE footage or of Bush abusing a child I cant see why they would be hacking into your PC :)

also you should open a new E mail account...or change the one you have and make sure you and only you know the user name and password as it could be a case of someone knowing your e mail details... so on....

maybe open up a hotmail e mail and keep it %100 secret, then change all your pass words and when you do make sure the details for these pass words are not being sent to an e mail account where someone else might also have access to them.

hope this helps...

hope this helps...If you knew your shit, you would know that a software firewall ain't worth a pinch of pigeon shit! If you get a decent hardware firewall, you don't even need antivirus software if you know what you are doing. Encrypt your hardware firewall to only accept the programs and port openings that you allow, and you won't have a problem. it's simple really. Forget the rest of the bullshit, it all starts with good hardware.

If in doubt always change your password, and ensure its not a sensitive password (don't use the same password that you might use for online banking!)

Firefox has some great plugins for password protection. You can create a master password and it will encript it for you. One password to rule them all ;)

Do a little digging in Google, this always helps me.

As for you love, if he does not beleive you then the relationship was already over, sorry to sound harsh, but trust is pretty important to the foundation of any relationship.

you can't lose your love over a computer. there are many ways to spy, but if you have nothing to hide, there is nothing to be afraid of. however spying is nasty and there are many tools and ways to do that. so if this is not your personal computer, just don't keep your secrets in it.

Hardware might be better, I have never used it... I have used Zone alarm and Avast for as long as I can remember and I have not had 1 virus or one invasion on my PC, and they are both free.... software firewalls also block in and out going traffic and ask you if you would like to except them, but at the end of the day weather you use software or hardware, it all gets broken down into software at some point and is susceptible to the same manipulation...

Forget all this "free on the net" stuff and pirate the good shit.

First off, get yourself a copy of BitLord (http://www.bitlord.com/)(download 1.1, other wise, you pay for it.)...

Next, get your hands on Panda AntiVirus. (http://isohunt.com/torrents/?ihq=panda+antivirus)
But make sure it's a new one, and get one with a crack. Serials just don't work too well.

Also, restart your computer. Go into your BIOS(when the computer is starting up, F2 or F8 on most computers) and switch off the "Power on LAN" function. Then save and exit, your computer will restart it's self. That will make sure than no one can turn it on via the network.

There's some other things, but I won't share it here.

Im not an expert but your all off the mark abit, first off windows is mainly built for office use and it has by default many services that are a VERY easy hack even with firewalls and anti-virus programs, i suggest turning these off (especially remote registry editing) theres a how to guide here:

http://www.prestwood.com/aspsuite/kb/document_view.asp?qid=100274

also id get a decent anti -virus (i use avast its free and its shit hot, because it isnt as poular as other comercial software like synamtec (norton) so hackers dont specifically target them)

also if it is your machine on the network, make sure your the administrator and dont give anyone else passwords/ admin properties, turn folder sharing off.

if your a bit more advanced there microsoft baseline security anyliser that is designed for administrators to test/ check there systems for holes / anything theve overlooked.

and further to that there is an amazing program called netools 4 that has lots of little programs and you can do alot with it, it can encrypt files, add passwords to folders, monitor common ports and tell you if someone is trying to connect to your ports ect ect ect

You can disable ms messenger, in fact it can be done easily in Ad-aware SE free version, by using the tool messenger control within the program to disable it. Unfortunately ms messenger can be a bit of a back door.

theres the msn messenger process and also a process with a similar name that is nothing to do with the instant messagine program, its called messenger.exe (i think) and the msn IM process is msnmsgr.exe- dont confuse the 2. and yes msn messenger is quite easy to pull packets of info out, and chunks of convos ect.

I will probably use Windows Vista on my next computer, if I can get some more money to afford one. It looks like a great OS. The drawback would be potential NSA SnoopWare (TM) which is not something that's very high up on my wish list. :) I haven't checked the latest Linux versions, but isn't KDE still a bit crude compared with Windows?

That's of course a matter of taste, but I would dear to say todays Linux versions are as flashy looking as Windows. And Linux operates much faster.Have you noticed that every time a new Windows version is out, you'll need to seriously upgrade your hardware to run it smoothly.Oh, and did you know that in Linux you don't need any antivirus etc. programs slowing down your computer. No viruses or spyware can affect your computer!

Here's a screenshot of Ubuntu desktop on a rotating cube(that's 4 desktops):

More screenshots here:

Ok, I will not harass you Windows users any more with this stuff.I just have to say: you don't know what you're missing if you haven't tried it.It's possible to run Ubuntu/Kubuntu from a CD-image without installing it.Let me know if you need help.

And Linux operates much faster.

That is something I appreciate. It's annoying to have a new computer to run slowly or unevenly just because the OS comes with so much crap in the form of a zillion compulsory background processes and the like. I don't know if this is the case with Windows Vista, but that's something that could be a problem.

hmm...seems the word "apparently" is lost on you two..

...however, this is what the creator had to say

Does the program remove the "_NSAKEY" permanently?

No. The program is a demonstration-only utility that loads a Microsoft-signed and a Cryptonym-signed Cryptographic Service Provider (CSP) into the CryptoAPI simultaneously. The CryptoAPI itself is not modified at all from its original form.

Hey i know quite a bit about pc's etc. Was the message a popup message?

Install GFI LanGuard, http://cache.torrentspy.com/download.asp?id=501039

You need a torrent client to d'load it.

It will help make ur pc more secure, less vulnerable and has an option to windows update you system.

P.S.

you can send messages to other lan user (assuming that the messenger service is started) click start, run, and type 'cmd'

Then type:net send 'computername' message
e.g: net send user-pc hello

to start messenger service type: net start messenger

Hope this helps!
