Hundreds of thousands of people were hit by electricity blackouts yesterday when six power stations shut down. The unscheduled stoppages were seen as an unprecedented sign of the fragility of Britain’s power infrastructure.
Operations were cancelled, people were stuck in lifts, traffic lights failed and fire engines sent out on false alarms. Householders were unable to use any appliances or make phone-calls as the blackouts hit areas including Cleveland, Cheshire, Lincolnshire and London. The cause was not revealed.
As the power cuts escalated, the National Grid was forced to issue the most serious possible warning – “demand control imminent” – and urged suppliers to provide lower voltage electricity to meet demand.
Energy suppliers affected by the shutdown, including British Energy and EON, said that they could not reveal the reasons for the cuts, nor would they say when some disrupted stations might resume service because disclosure could affect the wholesale price of electricity.
A National Grid spokesman admitted that the the number of shutdowns was highly unusual. One power company insider said that such an incident had not happened in the past ten years. After two power stations suddenly shut down within minutes of one another at midday, nine “generating units” also shut, and at least four other power stations suffered failures throughout the day. Wholesale electricity prices soared 35 per cent to £95 per megawatt hour, a new record, immediately after the cuts.
Operations had to be cancelled at Wycombe Hospital in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. When the cut struck, the hospital’s emergency generators kicked in but one was affected by a fire. Surgery was abandoned in the catheterisation department. Elsewhere in the town, lights went off in the Eden shopping centre. In and around the Lincolnshire towns of Market Rasen and Louth, 23,000 homes were affected. Thousands of households were left without electricity in Wallasey, Birkenhead, Ellesmere Port and Runcorn on The Wirral.

We had a blackout where I live about 3 months ago. It happened about 7pm and lasted nearly an jhour. It was local as I saw lights in the distance. I didnt find out what had caused it as I dont buy the local paper but it was good to tell my boys about the numerous power cuts we had when I was a child (not that long ago :o)
We had candles going, the light was very relaxing and made me wish we had them more often, sooo peaceful!
(I know....be careful what you wish for)
I did worry my fishtank would cool down too much, and of course not forgetting the frozen food!
It was the first one I have had for many, many years

Aye, i used to live in a small village up on a moor (nothing more than a couple of rows of houses) and I used to love blackouts and using candles, and seeing all the candles in everyone elses windows :D

There was a short blackout yesterday with National Grid who fucked up while switching circuits apparently:rolleyes:
See how the media turn it into a major problem for the UK:o

Definately fear mongering, testing, keeping us brits 'worried','it's all gonna end if we dont recycle plastic bags!!!!' lol, fuck them and their 'power'. We have generators, but they dont' really wanna cut power cause they wont sell any more of them Xboxes.......im sure those like us would soon adapt and like some people say, it will be the best thing to happen, or will it!? And yeah we had a blackout, the only thing that did worry me was keeping my mum warm, and my Monitor Lizards!!...

They "lost" the first power station, then the grid system started automatically to "shed" the load and so started systematically doing just that, reducing power to places rather than totally collapsing the whole UK grid. Its all in the design of the grid to do that, of course.
The interesting bit is how did the first station go down:rolleyes:

"LONDON (Reuters) - Kingsnorth coal fired power plant in England cut output by almost half on Monday morning after it was invaded by environmental campaigners but operator E.ON UK insisted the reduction was a commercial decision.
Greenpeace said its campaigners stopped the conveyor belts feeding coal into the plant in Kent in an effort to starve the power station.
Three of the four 485-megawatt generation units had reduced their output to 230 MW by 1 p.m. on Monday, according to data from National Grid, while the other one was shutdown last week.
A spokesman for the UK arm of German energy giant E.ON denied the output reduction was caused by the protest, adding that there is already plenty of fuel inside the plant.
"If we so desired we could keep it running normally," he said. "It's a commercial decision."
Greenpeace is protesting over E.ON's plan to build another carbon dioxide emitting plant at the site and wants Prime Minister Gordon Brown to reject it."

Why are Greenpeace not encouraging the government to have all homes and business's installed with green technologies ie solar panels wind turbines,
water containers to collect rainwater ie to be used for flushing the loo, bath and shower water:confused:
and other things they could spend there time doing to assist with environmental issues:confused:
That organization as probably been infiltrated by the elites as well:mad:
i mean all that money spent on NUCLEAR MIS MANAGEMENT:eek:
What a joke it all is:(

We've also had the poisoned water scare too, in Northants I expect that'll get rolled out in other test areas soon.
We had a power cut aswell , a little while ago, that turned out good. All the neighbours got together, with all the kids, real-fire, candles. A great night.
But how would all really get on ? Imagine no water out the tap, no electricity, food shortages, fuel shortages. It wouldn't take much for them to take us there.
Sorry, I'm sounding negative, but I'm not!!

I recall the blackouts in th e70's but you are surely too young to be recalling these beldazar! Candles and making toast on the gas fire us kids wanted it to stay that way .Anyway we survived then so dont panic its what they want .My sister tells me she hasn't had an electric bill for 3 years .She has written and phoned emailed etc for years complaining as she wants it sorted in case she wants to change suppliers or move she needs the details .They keep telling her her house isn't registered as being supplied from the local power grid!! She lives on an estate a relatively recent one last 15 years maybe built on fields in the area but nonetheless sheisnt in an isolated property .The strange thing is that a recent power cut to the local estates put everyone in darkness except their home .This freaked her out as it was a power cut not a fault with cables being cut or anything how did hers stay on .The response she got from them was what are you worrying about you had electric .She is getting it sorted out as they say they know its their problem not hers ? wtf how bizarre is that .What this indicates though is that they obviously have some sort of control to each property thru a black out otherwise how would their electric stay on .Somethings a foot and i dont mean the end of your leg

Good post thanks . trust in the good :D
hey perhaps we are mature enough to all pull together and their ace card will backfire as we all reconnect with one another like we used to before .Plenty of people have barbacues so in the short term i could see the people all pitching in , maybe this is what is needed t obring about change butfor the good

Electricity is overatted, but needed to a certain extent. But we consume it for useless things, like toasters, Tell-a-vision, hair straighteners, fanny electric razors (dont ask - my girl used 'em lol) Blah blah you get what i mean, but we need electricity for other things like for animal care, music food etc.
and heating for the old.

Heating with electricity? We use gas round here...
But ...the main thing I think is fridges. How can fridges work without electricity?
But evidently we don't 'need' electricity (well electricity in the sense of harnessed electricity) since we existed and got by fine for millennia without it.
