I can think of another good example: air travel. Most people who've expressed a preference to me, generally enjoy flying less than crossing the sea on a ship. 100 or so years ago before aircraft were invented everyone travelled abroad across the sea on huge beautiful, luxurious ships that resembled modern cruise liners. But those ships were soon replaced by noisy, cramped jet aircraft where you're elbow to elbow with vomiting kids and laptop-tapping businessmen. But the aircraft had one advantage over the ships: they got you where you wanted to go faster. And that one advantage outweighed every single one of their remaining disadvantages. This is another example of what Watts talks abhout in the vid.

Sangduen Chailert, known as "Lek" (which means 'small' in her native dialect), was born into a remote mountain community in Northern Thailand in the 1960's. Her maternal grandfather was a tribal man of the forest and Lek's jungle forays with him led to an early and organic understanding of the wonders of nature. Her grandfather was given an elephant as a gift when Lek was 5, for saving a man's life and it is from this early interaction with these majestic animals that Lek developed her inutitive understanding of their vast intellgence. Elephants are known as "Earth's Record Keepers" as are Whales for the sea.

Against a backdrop of poverty Lek obtained a university education - something practically unique considering her circumstances - and despite extreme financial difficulties she succeeded in founding Elephant Nature Park in 1996.

Meeting "Lek" in the bustle of her office in Chiang Mai, Thailand, we sat down to hear her story and passionate quest to provide sanctuary for elephants who have suffered a lifetime of abuse and harsh working conditions.

Lek means small in Thai, but there is nothing small about this amazing woman who is not only the first woman from a hill tribe background to earn her PhD, she has created the most loving space for elephants to live freely and bond in natural groups. Lek's ability to "talk" to the elephants has enabled her to create trust, respect and love between them and their human care-takers.

In a stroke of divine timing, we arrived there just after the birth of Faa Mai (pronounced "Far My" - which means 'new sky') and had the rare opportunity of interacting with her under the watchful eye of Lek and mother Mae Bua Tong. Being next to Mae Bua Tong, playing with her new born baby, all 250 lbs of her, is a life changing experience and one that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. This kind of interaction is not possible after a few more weeks as the elephant is too strong and heavy to interact with in this way.

Elephant Nature Park is a unique project set in Northern Thailand. Established in the 1990's the aim has always been to provide a sanctuary and rescue centre for elephants. The park is set in Chiang Mai province, some 60km from the city, and has provided a sanctuary for over 30 distressed elephants from all over Thailand. Set in a natural valley, bordered by a river, and surrounded by forested mountains the area offers a timeless glimpse of rural life.

Currently 30 elephants are under her care at the Elephant Nature Park, which has had seven births since 1996. Anyone witnessing Lek with elephants will see a loving bond, closeness and a special understanding.Finally, to anyone who has seen the elephant painting videos, these are a the result of very cruel and consistent punishment at the end of barbed metal hooks and it is imperative that we stop purchasing them or supporting these organizations. What you don't see on those YouTube videos is the elephant urinating in fear as it is handed the paint brush.

Hoagland for a discussion of the 2012 phenomenon and what it means both physically for Earth and sociologically for its denizens. "My sense is that we are, in fact, living the end of a rare and mysterious cycle of time," Braden mused. Regarding mainstream scientists who dismiss the idea of a 2012 event, Hoagland explained that this is because they refuse to examine the emerging science of torsion physics, which he believes plays a major role in the cycle coming to an end.

Braden noted that data from both archaeological and polar ice cap studies suggests that the current physical condition of Earth is very similar to previous time periods going through the cycle. Additionally, he explained that his research on polar shifts indicates that such an event requires the magnetic field of earth passing through a certain low threshold. Currently, Braden said, Earth's magnetic field is "so far above the measurement" that the possibility of crossing the threshold in the next three years "looks pretty slim." On the concern that many have with 2012-related disasters, Braden said, "physical changes, we've always survived. What we haven't survived is the way that we treat one another as we go through that change."

To that end, Hoagland noted an ongoing increase in cultural polarization, a trend that can be seen most clearly in contemporary politics. Looking at the past, he recalled how this polarity may be a symptom of the impending 2012 event as "these other civilizations killed themselves" while going through the cycle. "It's more the psychological, consciousness aspect of this physics that we may have to fear, at the moment, than the physical aspect," Hoagland suggested. As such, he expressed concern that 2012 could be used by nefarious forces to steer humankind towards a darker future, should the event usher in a consciousness shift.

Sangduen Chailert, known as "Lek" (which means 'small' in her native dialect), was born into a remote mountain community in Northern Thailand in the 1960's. Her maternal grandfather was a tribal man of the forest and Lek's jungle forays with him led to an early and organic understanding of the wonders of nature. Her grandfather was given an elephant as a gift when Lek was 5, for saving a man's life and it is from this early interaction with these majestic animals that Lek developed her inutitive understanding of their vast intellgence. Elephants are known as "Earth's Record Keepers" as are Whales for the sea.

Against a backdrop of poverty Lek obtained a university education - something practically unique considering her circumstances - and despite extreme financial difficulties she succeeded in founding Elephant Nature Park in 1996.

Meeting "Lek" in the bustle of her office in Chiang Mai, Thailand, we sat down to hear her story and passionate quest to provide sanctuary for elephants who have suffered a lifetime of abuse and harsh working conditions.

Lek means small in Thai, but there is nothing small about this amazing woman who is not only the first woman from a hill tribe background to earn her PhD, she has created the most loving space for elephants to live freely and bond in natural groups. Lek's ability to "talk" to the elephants has enabled her to create trust, respect and love between them and their human care-takers.

In a stroke of divine timing, we arrived there just after the birth of Faa Mai (pronounced "Far My" - which means 'new sky') and had the rare opportunity of interacting with her under the watchful eye of Lek and mother Mae Bua Tong. Being next to Mae Bua Tong, playing with her new born baby, all 250 lbs of her, is a life changing experience and one that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. This kind of interaction is not possible after a few more weeks as the elephant is too strong and heavy to interact with in this way.

Elephant Nature Park is a unique project set in Northern Thailand. Established in the 1990's the aim has always been to provide a sanctuary and rescue centre for elephants. The park is set in Chiang Mai province, some 60km from the city, and has provided a sanctuary for over 30 distressed elephants from all over Thailand. Set in a natural valley, bordered by a river, and surrounded by forested mountains the area offers a timeless glimpse of rural life.

Currently 30 elephants are under her care at the Elephant Nature Park, which has had seven births since 1996. Anyone witnessing Lek with elephants will see a loving bond, closeness and a special understanding.Finally, to anyone who has seen the elephant painting videos, these are a the result of very cruel and consistent punishment at the end of barbed metal hooks and it is imperative that we stop purchasing them or supporting these organizations. What you don't see on those YouTube videos is the elephant urinating in fear as it is handed the paint brush.

Author, filmmaker, and hermetic scholar Jay Weidner discussed his documentary about life-after-death, as well as his research into an ancient group known as the Aryans or the Vril, who migrated to
Mars. His film, Infinity: The Ultimate Trip features such people as Dannion Brinkley and Gregg Braden exploring concepts of the afterlife and reincarnation. Weidner said he made the film to help
people not be afraid to die, and to no longer be afraid to live their lives freely. "Once we realize that there's no such thing as death, then I think we're going to be liberated from the political
and social environment that we've been thrust into," he said. In the film, Brinkley reported that the government has investigated near-death experiences but has refused to tell the public what
they've found, because it's in their interests to control the populace through fear.


Secrets are going to come undone, "and one of the main secrets of all is that we are hyperdimensional beings...and that energies do not die, they only transform themselves," Weidner declared. In
his study of the ancient Sanskrit texts called the Puranas, he learned that humanity has been on Earth for as long as a million years, and repeats four different cycles. Our current age, they
predicted, will end in the year 2442 with coronal mass ejections wiping out life as we know it.


According to Weidner's interpretation of the Puranas, during one of the previous cycles when solar ejections occurred, a group of Earthlings were able to escape to Mars and live there safely
underground. When they returned to Earth, their appearance had changed to tall, pale-colored beings, who became known as the Ayrans or the Vril, he said, adding that they're secretly ruling the
planet. He also talked about L. Austine Waddell's research into the Aryans, and director Stanley Kubrick, whom he believed was trying to reveal knowledge of secret ruling societies, in his films
like Eyes Wide Shut, and an abandoned project called The Aryan Papers.

Edward Stourton chairs a live debate in which Professor David Marsland defends his view that the mentally and morally unfit should be sterilised. Professor David Marsland is Emeritus Scholar of Sociology and Health Sciences at Brunel University, London and Professorial Research Fellow in Sociology at the University of Buckingham. He argues that the only way to prevent the abuse and neglect of children whose parents are incapable of looking after them is to stop them from being born in the first place. It should be open to police and social workers to recommend that drug addicts, alcoholics and the mentally disabled should be irreversibly sterilised - and the courts should be able to enforce this. Challenging his views will be three expert witnesses including a senior social worker, a drugs charity lawyer and a moral philosopher. Listeners also join in via emails and text-messages.

Mike Thomson explores claims that the poisoning of a French town in 1951 was an LSD trial.

On August 16th 1951 a number of people in the quiet southern French town of Pont St.Esprit began to fall ill. Stomach pains were soon followed by violent and often terrifying hallucinations. Local hospitals were soon overwhelmed and more than thirty people were taken to asylums in nearby towns. It was soon decided that the cause was bread poisoning and the evidence pointed to just one Bakery. The reason, it was believed was 'ergot', a fungal infection found in Rye bread which had often caused mass poisonings in Medieval times.

But documents obtained by the American writer Hank Albarelli suggest that rather than simple 'ergot' there was a strong possibility that the symptoms and the nature of the outbreak were not a tragic accident. In his research in to the mysterious death of the CIA biochemist Frank Olson and his post-war work on LSD and its uses as a biochemical weapon he got hold of papers implying Olson's connection with the Pont St Esprit outbreak.

Mike follows up the claims talking to experts in LSD and its impact, historians of the cold-war search for the perfect biochemical weapon and agricultural scientists specialising in ergot poisoning. He also visits the town of Pont St Esprit and talks to one survivor, the local postman Leon Armundier, about the events of 1951. Leon describes of the horrors he faced as a young man, being forced into a straight-jacket for a week as burning sensations and images of snakes raged around him.
Many in the town are uneasy at re-opening the old story about Le Pain Maudit - the evil bread - preferring the establishment 'truth' that it was just a tragic accident. But there are some who believe a proper examination of the facts still hasn't taken place.

Steve Punt turns super sleuth, investigating a range of curious cases.

Today, Punt probes the curious claim that the Nazis developed flying saucers. This initially bizarre theory starts to carry a ring of truth as our gumshoe delves deeper into the evidence. Punt assesses sightings of strange lights in wartime skies - so-called foo fighters - and pores through CIA dossiers and old newspaper cuttings in search of the facts.

Following the paper trail across Europe, Punt is led to Poland and to a mysterious site dubbed The Henge where his contact, Igor, promises to spill the beans on top secret Nazi research apparently conducted there.

On Friday 30th April at 6.37pm 1999, a nailbomb exploded in The Admiral Duncan pub in Soho, London. Playwright Jonathan Cash was standing a few feet away from the device as it exploded.

The First Domino is a response to that event. A fiction inspired by that horrific bombing and other attacks like it, the play is woven around a series of conversations between a prisoner and a psychiatrist. It is a study of prejudice, extremism and marginalisation, as well as an examination of the human urge towards violence and revenge.

An uncompromising and at times shocking script, it is full of dark comedy too: "When people first meet me, I'm not expected to have a sense of humour. You seem to be defined by what's happened to you." Jonathan Cash

In a radio version re-imagined and rewritten for The Wire, this play has been developed from Jonathan's stage version, which won the Award for Best Theatrical Performance at the Brighton Fringe Festival in 2009.

The Cast stars Toby Jones (Infamous, Elizabeth I, Frost/Nixon, Harry Potter) and Carlton Hobbs Award-winner, Joseph Kloska.
