Hi, I just wanted to start a thread about crap jobs we may have done during our time here. Before Xmas I was made unemployed from a job I enjoyed by a bunch of cowboys. I took a job after xmas working in one of those generic motel style hotels that act above their station employed as a driver. I had to work split shifts (8am to 12am-6pm to 10pm). In the morning I was a laundry porter and in the evening I was made to stand by the entrance and greet people as they entered the (h)motel. I only lasted 2 days before I was saved by an old boss of mine and given a decent job.

Of course the job was minimum wage, six days a week. I f-ing hated it. You won't believe how gratewful I am to the bloke who gave me my old job back. I was nearly in tears when I had to stand by the entrance to the Hotel. I had to walk nearly 2 miles in the rain to work then smile and welcome disgruntled businessmen for 4 hours.

The only driving I ever did was taking the senior managers down the town to a better hotel so they could go on the piss!!

I hated it. Silly post but I thought I wold share it and wonder if anyone has ever done anything worse.

As a teen, I worked Saturdays as a hair salon washing hair. I didn't hate it, it was fun.

In my mid twenties, during my backpack travels, I worked in a sandwich shop (didn't hate it), and also as a waitress by night. Now THAT was a hard job, and even though the people were thankless (including the boss), and the trays were really heavy, and the air conditioning never worked...I came away from that experience respecting restaurant workers more than ever. Now I over-tip, and I make sure to thank them sincerely.

I think your experience may have been an important lesson for you. You just have to think about what it really meant.

Important lesson was that they took the piss. I achieved nothing and gave nothing. I was pointless in a wet sweaty shirt. I have nothing against the workers there except that I was lucky to escape after only two days. It was the managers that annoyed me by paying the stigmatic minimum wage but expecting employees to be expectional while they swaned about on the piss at better hotels.

I will always tip better whenever I get the chance to reside in these places as the staff deserve it. I hated it and felt like they had unzipped their trousers and taken a huge shit on my head because I was desperate for a job (the managers that is)!!

PS Does anyone here feel that the Minimum wage is a good thing, or do you feel it just stigmatises people?

The minimum wage is there to make sure you dont earn too much, keeping you down there on the bottom rung.
To make ends meet then youll have to do overtime, more work for less money in real terms.
Im unemployed at the moment, but when i am working i will not work overtime
you should be able to get enough money during your normal 40 hours or so.
I have no debts,no mortgage,no 4x4,no HP,etc.
so i dont need much to survive day to day and that gives me a bit more
"sense of freedom"....and more control over my circumstances.:)
P.S.please no posts saying 'freedom is an illusion'...which it is anyway,i just get sick of hearing it.:D

You could understand that working in didn't fields of employment is a "learning" in life. Perhaps it's something you ask to do (before re-incarnation). I've had many low end jobs. I also started my own business which was very successful, BUT now I have nothing (I wont elaborate) but I'm so better for it. Ofcourse this is personal to me, but choosing to start all over again, gives me a better perspective. The mind has clarity, see's the bigger picture. It isn't for everyone but it worked for me.

All my jobs have been rubbish, but not truly vile, detestable and mind numbing of course, soul destroying and restricting.
I find today that people 'prostitute' themselves by working all the hours god sends just to get the material things they are virtually told to buy.
The lifestyle in the UK used to be jokingly called ' the 2 car family'
now its more like '3 cars(4x4),plasma telly and an house extension family'.
Every body is competing with one another to see who can get the best and dearest stuff.
How sad and shallow can you get?

yes i am a minimum wage soldier, i rarely work due to this fact, the combination of the council paying my rent and Job seekers allowance means i am as well off out of work as i am in it...

I recentley completed a temporary position in a bankrupt company called stationery box, it was interesting watching the shop disintegrate around me and also to see peoples reaction to the disintegration, many were genuinely upset to see the shop closing, it was a good thing for me though, i had been out of work for two years and i really put myself out of my comfort zone.

I feel it is vital to keep challenging ourselves, and even in some cases doing stuff we feel we don't want to, have no fear and make the most of even the darkest situation, if for no other reason than to see just how brilliant you are and how you can deal with anything....

Crap jobs should be very high-payed. Think about it: crap job + crap wage, that's a pathological combination, stemming from an old-school survival-for-the-fittest mentality, which has created the rigid hierarchical pyramid of social worth we see around us today in our so-called modern world. I even suspect that companies that offer crap jobs for crap wages will not last. What was 'competitive advantage' in old-school business-think will not be able to meet future requirements for integral business, and hence no longer be any competitive advantage at all.

Crap jobs should be very high-payed.

In one area this is already the case. Jobs like being president for a large corporation are crap jobs with high wages. The poor suckers think that they have a high social status, while in reality all they got is a severely heightened risk of getting a cardiovascular disease.

Also, what one person thinks of as a crap job, another person can really enjoy.

Other people, like Steve Pavlina, thinks that ALL jobs are crap:

When I first left school I didn't have a clue what i wanted to do with my life; I'd blown my exams and was very dispondant. I carried on with my paper round for a few months and got a job putting wooden toys in boxes for a man who made them in his home. Then I got a job in an office as a junior, but I hated it! It was so false and political, everyone desperate for promotion and willing to tread on anyone else to get a few more scraps from the table. The only good thing about the job was that it was for the local health authority. It gave me the chance to meet members of the hospital portering service and realize that I wanted to be a part of that. As soon as I turned 18 I did.

Unless you genuinely enjoy your job then all jobs are crap.
Even if your job is your hobby you gunna have times when youre sick of it.
The word job strikes up negative thoughts, youre doing something you really dont want to do.
Its only neccessity that puts you in that position.
A thought has just occured that if everybody wanted to do what they wanted wouldnt that lead to utter chaos?
Yes,it would.but most people are willing to tow the line.
I would say that most people are happy enough to lead the simple life, dont want too many upsets, just get on with things and leave it at that.
Maybe people dont wanna know whats really going on.
Ignorance and bliss do seem an attractive couple at times.:)

Yes, it could lead to nobody wanting to work, and since we don't have androids to do the work for us.... yet, it would in a worst case scenario mean that nothing would be done. So some kind of balance between work and total freedom is needed.

You need to get some qualifications friend. working for the man will lead you to an early grave, but talking about a worse job, I was an apprentice Carpenter, who was the bosses (whoever that was at the time) whipping boy. If shit needed to be shovelled, I was your man. If you needed a hand digging a hole, I was your man. If you needed the toilets scrubbed, I was your man. Only in my third year, did I start to learn about my trade from a practical prospective. After I had my qualifications, I started to teach myself about the trade that I was indentured to for four years.

Whoever he is, he's onto something. the only work humans should be doing, is hunting for the next meal, and gathering for the next meal. The natives of the world, knew this thousands of years ago, but we have yet to grasp the idea. How dumb are we?

You got a point there. If our modern society REALLY was that modern, why then must most people work their asses off 60 hours per week or more? If we really were effective and productive, then we should be able to produce what was needed in much less time.

Someone said something very interesting. After the agricultural revolution, people needed to work many hours, but before that, in hunter-gather civilizations, people only needed to work very few hours. After the industrial revolution, people worked many hours, and today, in the middle of the information age, we still work many, many hours. Something's suspect with that picture.

I worked in a shop once and that was fun. It's often not the jobs themselves that I have a problem with, but the lack of freedom. Our whole society is so mechanical, the tick tock world, as Stuart Wilde called it. I would even be able to enjoy a simple job as a road sweeper, if I could do it whenever I wanted, and not be bound by some mechanical Gregorian tick tock schedule. I understand that some form of mechanical schedule is needed, but society today is far, far too fixated on mechanical schedules.

To become less bound by mechanical schedules we need to develop our intuition. The thinking mind cannot deal with the higher requirements of a less mechanical society. We need the order that the Gregorian calendar can provide, but the mechanical rigidity of today's society needs to be transcended.

All jobs and lack of freedom go hand in hand.
