Saturday's alert to health departments around China comes in response to what the ministry calls a relatively large outbreak of Enterovirus 71 in the central province of Anhui.

By the end of Thursday, more than 3,321 cases of the virus were reported in Anhui's Fuyang city. Besides the 22 deaths, the health ministry says 978 people remain hospitalized, 58 in serious or critical condition.

Parts of China experience frequent outbreaks of viruses. The government has ramped up its disease-monitoring network since the SARS pneumonia outbreak in 2003.

Any disease would have to stay viable for more than the time it takes to keep the host alive without betraying symptoms of illness in the host to spread the illness to others. If this isn't achieved the body and the disease will burn itself out too quickly before it can spread and kill further host organisms.

being that china is a country of 1+billion, you can expect these things to happen.

and if china was a country of 20 billion, these things would happen more often.

look into some of the diseases/mites that plague beehives and ant colonies.

we are no more then animals on this earth,trading gases, moisture,viruses and bacteria with the environment.

just as human diseases affect coral in the ocean, things affect us.

Or the olympics gets lots of nationalities there as the outbreak worsens and then uses draconian measures to keep them in China and exterminate them. Or let them all go to spread the diseases elsewhere. Its possible.

Maybe it's all just a rumour to frighten the athletes into pulling out ? I heard athletes being interviewed a month or two ago on BBC Radio and they were trying to pressure them into pulling out but the athletes were having none of it.

The athletes are unfortunatley feuled by their own selfish motivations and some actually believe they are doing their country a service by participating in the games. The best service they could do for humanity as a whole would be to boycott the games this year and send a message to China and the world.

Well, the athletes are NOT allowed to take their own nutritional diet. They've been told, they have to eat local chinese food. (Good luck)

Your welcome. Keep in mind not all diseases and viruses are equal. Each have different families, causes, and treatments. Those which can't be treated and adapt are the most deadly. Usually, flash point disease and viruses will burn out in short order. M. Knight Shamaylan's the Happening seems interesting. A great book I read called "The Hot Zone" explains a lot about viruses etc...
