Thanks for the link.

I just had a bit of a look at the power of napping info, and it all makes sense.......

http://www.kellyhowell.com/podcasts/dr_sara_mednick_and_the_power_of_napping.html

.....only problem for me is if I have a nap (whether a power nap or otherwise) I always wake up feeling shite, and it takes me at least an hour or more to feel even slightly human again. :(

Are you sure you are correctly power napping Limelady? It is my belief although I haven't heard the podcast yet, that a power nap is basically resting the eyes. You don't actually go to sleep as such, well at least that is what I do and it works for me. I close my eyes and just basically observe my thoughts. When you observe your thoughts, you will notice how your thoughts begin to flow, rather than become stuck on a single thought. In this way the internal chatter is reduced and you feel refreshed. Try it, just basically close your eyes and do nothing for 15 minutes except perhaps observe your breathing and then gently open your eyes. Don't go to sleep, thats why you end up feeling groggy. p.s don't forget to check the archives on that site. Oh and thankyou for intervening in the other thread.

Hi emma.

I think its safe to say I'm not doing it right. If I decide to have a nap its usually because I'm feeling really tired (I stay up way too late reading and researching) and as soon as I relax and lie down I basically pass out! I go into such a deep sleep I have trouble 'climbing' back out. In fact, during an afternoon nap I often have what is known as sleep paralysis, a state where I am aware I am trying to wake up, but I just can't move my body or wake right up properly. You start dreaming that you are awake, but then you realise you are not! Does this make sense?

I don't often have afternoon naps these days because I don't like the feeling of being groggy and headachy afterwards.

I will try the method you describe where you don't actually go to sleep properly. I may feel more refreshed.

Thanks for the info. :)

Yes I have had sleep paralysis on two occasions and it freaked me out. If you try what I said, you may find yourself drifting off, try to avoid that. It is probably best to start first off when you are not overly tired, just so you can manage to get a feel for it without the worry of falling into a deep sleep. You should notice a difference even if your not really all that tired. I do it everyday as a form of meditation, about 15 minutes in the morning before breakfast and 15 minutes in the evening before tea.

I have had sleep paralysis also, and it is rather a a scary experience.
it was like wanting to get out of bed, being awake but yet not awake and totally unable to move although I wanted to.My eyes were wide open though! Strange experience for sure.

Yeah, I get that too, and when that happens, it always feels as though there is someone in the room with me. It's a little scary. Have you had that sensation also?

Yes I have, It felt like I was being abducted. I could not move and it felt like someone was in the room with me. Prior to this my bedroom was flooded with a strong light, which I had no explanation for at the time, but the more I thought about it and did some research, I believe It was a car's headlights across the street shining into my bedroom, but because you are in some heightened state of awareness when you are in sleep paralysis, I believe everthing is intensified, so my experience really did feel like an alien abuduction, I even felt like I was being touched all over, but I think now that this was just the hairs on my body sticking up through fear that made it feel that way.

I woke up at 2.22am in the morning, paraylised in my bed with a light filling my room once. The light was only brief, but i couldn't find a rational explanation as to where it came from. Sounds crazy but it happened. freaked living daylights out of me to as I was living alone at the time.

Yes my experience with the light filing the room was in the early hours of the morning as well. It is indeed a strange phenomena and one which I'm sure is the actually the cause of many so called suspected alien abduction experiences.

Wow! I've never thought about it like that before.

Yes, a heightened state of awareness, you're right, because I can look all around my room, but I know my eyes are closed. The reason I'm looking all around my room is to find whomever is in my room 'cos I KNOW they're there!

Wow! I need to chew on this for a while...thanks for your input.
