Was Howlin Wolf a Freemason???

I was flipping through an older magazine I have and noticed a pic of Howlin Wolf playing guitar. On his left hand it appears he is wearing a masonic ring. Anyone have any info on this??

Fascinating. Everyone is a mason! He must have been in one of the black lodges. I found this:

Sanders, who is a 32nd degree Mason, admits Howlin' Wolf taught him to howl in the '50s, and that has gotten him gigs singing for everyone from the Queen of England who allowed him to reside in her palace, to three separate trips and a brief stay in the White House while performing for Presidents Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter and Vice President Walter Mondale.

Although his masonic membership is unconfirmed, a photograph of Burnett taken by Brian Smith in 1964 shows him wearing a masonic ring. The following correspondence is also worthy of note.
"Wolf was an active member of the Masons in Chicago and perhaps even earlier in the South. I have been told that many Chicago bluesmen were active in the Masons, especially in the 50s and 60s, including Sunnyland Slim and Magic Slim among others. Even one of the several Wolf imitators, Lil' Howlin' Wolf (Jessie Sanders), is an active Mason and often wears a belt with a Masonic buckle. He was in the Masons in Chicago with Howlin' Wolf."

It doesnt' mean he was a bad person. There are a lot of great Freemasons, I'm sure. I would bet that the black lodges are not really allowed to know what is going on.

Gathered around the Secretary's desk, Bro Rudyard Kipling was discussing the evening's proceedings with Bro Robert Burns, who was to give one of the Charges assisted by Bro Mark Twain. Also taking part were Bros Conan Doyle, Walter Scott, Samuel Johnson, Alexander Pope and Robert Service. The Grand Organist, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, was discussing last minute changes with Bros Gilbert and Sullivan. The founding members, Bros George Washington, Sir John A MacDonald, Guiseppe Garibaldi, Benito Jaurez, John Hancock and Ben Franklin were seated in the East. They have been joined by Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore. The Generals, Omar Bradley, Jimmy Doolittle, George C Marshall, John Pershing and Douglas McArthur, take their seats next to Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. The Lodge Treasurer, Bro Henry Knox was busy collecting dues from Bros Thomas E Dewey and William McKinley. The Master, MW Bro HRH The Duke of Connaught, has rapped the gavel to call the Lodge to order and it is now time for us to depart. With one last took at this brilliant assembly, one wonders what the public's perception of Freemasonry might be if they were able to visit such a lodge. IN GOD WE TRUST

What is all that? I'm not going to read that. Tell me something, kallista. Do you seriously believe that all of the millions of masons are evil people? It should be obvious to anyone who pays attention that many, many of the lower level masons are decent people who think they are doing something for the good of humanity. I am not vouching for Howlin' Wolf. I am just saying it's not correct to assume that because he was a freemason, he was a bad guy.

If you can't be bothered to read it can i be bothered to reply? Most masons join to get on, or for protection. Personally I don't understand why there is a need for charity either, and collecting for it just extends it. No one should need charity.

You make a smartass comment about "keep telling yourself that" and post some mason bragging about all the famous personages who are masons. Like we don't already know this? If you don't understand that the lower levels are used as insulation from public scrutiny by the higher levels, you don't know jack.

Depends on your definition of evil. Certainly joining a club which allows you advantages over others, immunity from prosecution and investigation and other privileges, all under the guise of doing 'Good Works' is certainly immoral and at the higher levels evil. But of course the bottom supports the top.
It's disappointing I know, to realise that some of your heroes are not what they seem, and they may have got to the popular position they hold with some 'help'. I've suffered it too. Sorry if I appeared sarccy but this really is an important point to me.
