Fingerprint scan at schoolgates

Mar 24 2008 Nick Coligan, Liverpool Echo

HI-TECH fingerprint scanners could be installed at the doors of Liverpool’s rebuilt schools.

Education managers must decide in the next year whether to include the controversial technology in designs for new learning centres.

The equipment, which checks children’s fingers or thumbs for their unique code, is already used in many school canteens and libraries.

But it may now be taken a step further so only teachers, pupils and support staff supposed to be on school premises can access buildings.

It could also help monitor attendance.

City leaders want to find out more about the system which could be incorporated into Liverpool’s multi-million pound Building Schools For The Future (BSF) scheme.

They are concerned the controversial equipment might prompt complaints from staff and parents if it is introduced without their consent.

The council’s education director Stuart Smith admitted there was a “difference of opinion” among headteachers and governors about scanning.

He said: “Currently, arrangements are put in place by the governors and parents at each individual school autonomously.

“In the designs for BSF, a number of project managers have included it. It is tied to pupil registration – attendance is based on fingerprint entry.

“We have not built any BSF schools with that facility or made any detailed planning arrangements so we have not had to answer that question.

“Headteachers and governors hold a whole spectrum of views, from those who do not touch it with a bargepole, to those who want to use it to take attendance, to those who use it for school meals.

“We have quite an influence over the way schools rebuild and have to decide in 12 months whether to endorse using it in the main entrance at schools.”

Fingerprint technology is used at Liverpool’s biggest school, Alsop comprehensive in Walton, for school meals and library books.

Education chief Cllr Paul Clein said: “I was reassured by the system at Alsop. It does not retain fingerprints but translates them into a numeric algorithm for each kid – like an individual bar code.

“If parents and staff do not want to participate at Alsop, that is fine. It might make life more awkward, but it is their choice.

“Maybe it is something we need to formulate and offer guidance.

But if it was a condition of entry to school, I think that is a bridge too far.

“People should always have the right to opt out of the system.”

The Echo first revealed how fingerprint scanners were being used in Liverpool schools almost two years ago.

Some parents believe it boosts pupil safety as they do not need to bring cash to school and risk being bullied for it.

The cash-free system also speeds up dinner queues and stops pupils buying junk food.

Scanning is now also being used for registration and library services.

A single database can be used to give pupils and staff access to doors, library books, school meals and the register.

Great now all a kidnapper has to do is chop of the kids finger, enter it into the scanner, send the finger in an envelope to the parents along with ransom demands, before the school knows anything about truancy. Which in turn that gives them about a 10+ hour head start before any investigation is filed in 24 hours after being reported missing from school.

If anyone sees any other newspaper reports on fingerprint scanning in schools would you mind just doing a little favour and spend a minute posting the link in this section.

Ive done the same at my boys school, and the teachers said that they would not allow such systems in thier school and that they would be failling the children if they have to put such systems in place..
But just in the near by town they sent out letters asking to take imfo from the kids and photos.. the school had put a pack together asking for concent, saying it's all to do with the internet .... and if you do not return the pack signed within a week that you have then given your concent.... very wrong..

I find myself agreeing with my sons teachers that if they need such a system they are failing the children.

Is that the same school they're trying to close down? If so no wonder!

yes it's the same school, and the other local school that they are keeping open already has a fingerprint system in place for school meals ... oh no surpise there!!! also a school near by, I some time walk past doing doggy duties has up graded it's cameras infront of the school ,,, I life in an area of very low crime. also some nights after midnight the computer in the schools office seems to be on and working by it's self ... and we all know after afew hours it should have turned itself off ... and teachers would not be doing nightshift...

British Airways are facing problems at term5 for trying to collect fingerprints, it's against the law ... so why do school feel that they are not breaking the same laws.

Dna blood samples at birth,
fingerprints to enter school and total misinformation from the education system ,
Character, and health reports from nursery age, or even from inside the womb!
not allowed to play out side for fear of abduction
chipping children
fluoride in the water,
mandatory vaccination programmes,
chemicals in the clouds,
chemicals in the food,
computers and set top tv boxes with built in cameras, and micro phones
CCTV in schools, well everywhere

i doubt that if when we were children we couldn't imagine the scale of this
the next generation have no hope of experiencing a free way of life let alone a free way of thinking

It's strange how the location of CCTV cameras do not relate to crime levels. They're defnitely there for snooping on us, not protecting us.

It's encouraging that some education professionals are refusing to go along with the fingerprinting agenda.:)

“If parents and staff do not want to participate at Alsop, that is fine. It might make life more awkward, but it is their choice.

how "awkward"?...

...also, does one get an impression that it is said in a condescending tone?...

“Maybe it is something we need to formulate and offer guidance.

But if it was a condition of entry to school, I think that is a bridge too far.

“People should always have the right to opt out of the system.”

...hmm, will it be "awkward" to opt out too?...
