What do people think is a good start to improving their spiritual well being & mental health or what have you done recently that you think has been beneficial and would benefit others?
For me, stopping watching t.v and becoming vegetarian seem to have made a great difference.

Being truthful to yourself and others, following your heart rather than egoic desires.

No alcohol and a rejection of excessive materialism have personally been two of the most beneficial things for my peace of mind...

Admit that I have the potential to be just as bad, or worse than anyone else I'll ever meet.
Realize that even though I am entirely capable of being worse, I am better off not to compete on that level.
Know that how I treat others is how they will treat me, and learn to set myself up to be treated well by appropriately adhering to this principle.
See the good it is doing me as I succeed toward perfection, and learn from the example of my failures.
Remember that I was once lost, and without hope. And marvel that I've come so far, And pray that I can make it all the way.

Eat plenty of meat, keep active (children who participate in sports do better in school).

They're all related. With a healthier body, comes a healthier mind, and spirit.
No meat makes us susceptible to religious cults (not spiritualism but brainwashing). If it was spiritualism, it wouldn't work for all cults.

a fast is meant to be a great shortcut to being more spiritually open,
24 hours is good for a start, but i think imagine you might need twice that to feel a big difference spiritually

A lot of great responses. :)
The most important thing is to listen to yourself.
Fasting, exercising, meditation, prayer, vegetarianism...these appear to be the big ones.
Let's not forget though the spiritual power of giving. Find something that holds value in your life (but is not essential) and give it away to a stranger. Bless the person and the gift. Do not tell anyone what you did.
Saying thank you. Say thank you randomly aloud and in your head, to a god or to a tree or to the clouds. Thank you is a powerful expression and one of my favorites in the English language. I enjoy the sound of it, thank you.
Avoid saying, "I'm sorry," unless there is truly an offense that deserves apologizing for. Too often in our society people apologize too much. It seems as though some are always saying "I'm sorry" as if they feel a need to apologize for their own existence.
Read. Read the Koran. Read the Tao Te Ching. Read the Bible. Read the Kabala. Read all the holy books you can get your hands on. But you don't need a guru, a guide, or a priest. Look within.

Yes, people with a weak mind will get susceptible for cults.
Stop searching for good arguments to support meat, cause there aren't any.
