Any techies know of any good (preferably free) programs that make your online activities anonymous? Are they easy to configure and do they slow everything down by a lot?

Ah now worries - I found one and have got it working!
http://www.torproject.org/
It's a little tricky to figure out and it does slow things down a fair bit, but I now have a randomised IP address so anonymous surfing! Useful in these times, I'm sure you'll agree ;)
If anyone wants to know I'm happy to tell you how I got it working.

why do you wish to hide, this will allow them to go for you ... oh he most be doing something wrong he does not want us to know who he is !!!!!
be proad to speak out for what you feel is right ... this is your rights ... and others who see you might do the same .. if you hide they will target you and can easly discridet you and other will not follow....
be proud of who you are .... be proud of what you say ... waking up is about freeing yourself ... not putting yourself in a new prison made by fear...

Well fucking said that man
I've tried these 'proxy servers' but found the computer slowed to an unacceptable level. Can you play online games with yours running without masses of lag?!

@ malvern: obviously heartfelt words but I don't agree with them. Privacy is a right and you don't have any if you surf the web. I can be proud of who I am and what I believe AND have privacy and security
@ mido: Sorry I've no idea, I don't play online games. It's slowed down my net speed for sure but I can live with it

Plus there is a Firefox add-on which lets you disable it with just a click of the mouse

understand why and how you feel mate ... that but is coming
but
sadley the net does not give you privacy because of these bastards who want to control us ... they have rooms full of screens checking every second for hidden users and they say this is to stop fraud, it's there to protect them...
yes you are right to want privacy and freedom ... buy it's these evil governments that stop us from having it by making up laws ..and it's these laws and law makers that we most change and not are actions ... you should feel free to do anything ( as long as it does not fck others over )... all this tracking is for the controllers and large companies, they call it trend tracking so that they forcast ... forcast new ways to intrap us and controll us..
every time you spent, not using cash they track it .. every where you go, they track you, you leave a trail no matter how much you try and hide it....
so as i said it's the laws and law makers that need to change, not you and your actions ... you are free, by hiding you are not.

I wouldn't use them for illegal activities. Anything that actually works is either bought out or taken over by tptb.

Use vidalia (http://vidalia-project.net/), you can switch it on and off when you want to leave a message. Browsing with it all the time is impractical.

I said before in another anonymous browsing thread.
YOU CANNOT USE THE INTERNET ANONYMOUSLY
The way you connect to the Internet is through an IP address, this is unique and identifies you, and you only. Using such programs that manipulate the IP address such as stand-alone programs or proxy servers only manipulate your IP to the SINGLE website you are on.
Example -
If you were to use a proxy service to visit this website, the administrator of this website would not see your true IP address, it would be masked under a proxy address which is not yours. Bare in mind that many modern websites block known proxy traffic to limit spam.
But on the bigger service at hand your IP CANNOT be hidden, your Internet Service Provider gives you your IP, how can you change the ISP IP directions? You can't.
You're ISP knows exactly what you do on the Internet and the ISP data will be used to track your paths and habits of what you do, you are not anonymous. Ever.

There was JAP which used encryption, but I believe the FBI bought out that service.
