Woman, 8-year-old son shot by off-duty policeman
(03-18) 11:27 PDT Oceanside, Calif. (AP) --
Authorities said they planned to question a woman Tuesday after she and her 8-year-old son were shot by an off-duty San Diego police officer in an apparent fit of road rage.
The woman, whose name has not been released, remains hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, said Oceanside police Sgt. Kelan Poorman.
The boy was questioned by investigators Monday at Rady Children's Hospital, where he is being treated.
The shooting happened at about 9:15 p.m. Saturday, when Frank White allegedly fired at the woman's vehicle in a shopping center parking lot after one of the two cut the other off in traffic.
It was not clear, authorities say, whether White believed he was acting in self-defense.
Oceanside police said the woman, who is in her 20s and married to a Camp Pendleton Marine, was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
Marine officials referred questions about the incident to the Oceanside police department.
White, 28, is on administrative leave while Oceanside police investigate the shooting, said Police Chief William Lansdowne. San Diego police also are conducting an internal investigation.
White has worked for the San Diego Police Department since 2005.
