To me, it seems odd that he would paint the cans black rather than stripping them down to aluminum. I lived in a house with an aluminium threshold at the front door. To put your feet on it when the sun was shining was not possible. You would have to put your feet on it for about a second at a time in order to cool it before you could hold your foot on it for longer.
Try it.
Strip one can down to aluminium, and paint one black to see what I mean.

Sorry, surprising as it maybe, you're not correct.
Black absorbs light and heat better than any colour.
Thats why all solar hot water systems are black.
I built one a while ago, you would be amazed how hot it got in ambient light.
