israeli Defense Minister vows to unleash "Shoah" on Gaza

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7270650.stm

Speaking on Israel Army Radio, [israeli deputy defense minister] Mr Vilnai said if Palestinians increased rocket fire, they will bring upon themselves what he called a "shoah" - a Hebrew word for catastrophe, and for the Nazi Holocaust.

The BBC's Katya Adler in Jerusalem says many of Mr Vilnai's colleagues have quickly distanced themselves from his comments and also tried to downplay them saying he did not mean genocide.

I'll bet.

The gruesome truth about israel's goals and intentions is never far behind their flowery lies.

israelis have slaughtered over 35 innocent Palestinians in less than 48 hrs, yet clearly it's not enough for their bloodthirsty souls.

GAZA CITY, March 1--The Israel occupying regime pressed its assault against the Gaza Strip with a surge of strikes on Saturday, killing at least 32 Palestinians including four children, medical officials said.

The fighting was concentrated in and around the crowded Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, where the regime's special forces crept in just after midnight followed by a wider incursion involving tanks and helicopters.

Dr. Muawiya Hassanein, head of Gaza emergency medical services, told AFP at least 32 people were killed by a "great number of rockets fired by Israeli planes."

Seventy-five people were wounded, 15 of them critically, he said.

Witnesses also reported clashes in the nearby Tufah neighborhood in northern Gaza City.

The urban battlefields were littered with debris as frightened residents hid inside their homes and clerics read out Quranic verses over loudspeakers from inside mosques, witnesses said.

The high death toll makes Saturday's operation the deadliest raid on Gaza in several months and comes at the end of a sharp four-day escalation of violence that has killed around 60 people.

The latest dead include at least four children and three women, medics said, including a 12-year-old girl and her 11-year-old brother, who relatives said were killed by shrapnel as they slept.

At least 10 activists were killed in the operation, including eight from the Islamic resistance movement Hamas movement and another two from Islamic Jihad.

At least five Zionist soldiers were wounded, the army said.

Gaza activists meanwhile fired at least 30 rockets at southern Israel, army radio reported.

The fresh Israeli killings came hours after the occupying regime's deputy war minister Matan Vilnai threatened Palestinians with a 'holocaust'.

Controversially, Vilnai used the word 'shoah' -- which is exclusively used by Jews to describe the Nazi extermination.

Vilnai warned Israel "will not shy away from any action" to halt the near-daily rocket fire from Gaza.

Hamas held the comment up as proof their enemies were the "new Nazis" and Palestinian Authority chief Mahmoud Abbas called Israeli threats "dangerous".

Ousted Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh said: "This is a proof of Israel's pre-planned aggressive intentions against our people.

"They want the world to condemn what they call the Holocaust and now they are threatening our people with a holocaust."

Other officials of the occupying regime threatened to launch a larger-scale offensive.

War minister Ehud Barak sought to prepare the way for an offensive by sending confidential messages to world leaders, including US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who plans to visit the region next week.

"Israel is not keen on and rushing for an offensive, but Hamas is leaving us no choice," Barak told the leaders, according to Israel's mass circulation daily, Yedioth Ahronoth.

Security sources were quoted by both Israel Radio and Army Radio as saying that a major operation was being prepared but was not yet imminent.

A senior member of Olmert's centrist Kadima party, Tzachi Hanegbi, said the army should prepare to topple Hamas.

The occupying regime pulled its troops and settlers out of the Gaza Strip in 2005 but still maintains control of the territory's air space, coastal waters and major border crossings.

Hamas has raised the stakes in the confrontation by using Grad missiles, more powerful and accurate than improvised Gazan Qassams, to strike deep into Ashkelon, a major southern illegal settlement of 120,000 people.

Gaza resistance fighters have fired more 125 rockets at Zionist targets since Wednesday, according to the Israeli army.

The chief of Israel's left-wing Meretz party, Yossi Beilin, said Hamas had offered a truce around Gaza over the past two weeks but the overtures had been rejected by the Israeli leadership.

Amid the Israeli threat of an impending ground operation, tens of thousands of Gazans protested Friday against Israeli raids.

The demonstrators poured into the streets throughout the impoverished and isolated territory in response to Hamas calls to denounce the airstrikes, whose victims include close to 20 civilians, many of them children.

"They've killed my right to childhood," read a sign held by a child, clad in a red-stained white funeral shroud, who attended a large rally in Jabaliya.

Among the protesters in Gaza City was Khalil al-Hayyah, a Hamas leader who lost a 25-year-old son in an airstrike Thursday.

"We will never recognize Israel, even if it assassinates all our leaders and kills our children," he shouted to the crowd.

Haniyeh told worshippers at a Gaza City mosque that the coastal strip is facing war.

"Gaza today faces a real war, a crazy war led by the enemy against our people," he said.

Haniyeh lashed out at the US administration, which he said backs the Israeli attacks by portraying them as "legitimate self-defense".

He also accused the Arab world of "encouraging the Israeli aggression" through its silence.

The 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council also condemned the Israeli raids and urged the United Nations to rein in the Zionist regime.

At least 261 people have been killed, most of them Palestinians, since the Israeli regime and the Palestinians relaunched formal talks at a US conference in November, according to media count.

Israel: Enlarged Operation Not Major Ground Operation

01/03/2008 Israeli forces are engaged in an "enlarged operation" in the northern Gaza strip, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai told Israeli public radio on Saturday.

"I am calling this an enlarged operation and not a major ground operation," Vilnai said, adding that Israeli forces "are using mostly air units, although some ground forces are also involved."

Vilnai denied that the operation was the start of a major campaign aimed at a partial reoccupation of the Gaza Strip, from which Israel withdrew its forces and settlers in 2005. "We are permanently engaged in Gaza, and what we are doing now is within the scope of such activities. There's nothing new apart from the raised tension of the past few days," Vilnai told the radio. He added that "the more the situation escalates the greater the chances of resorting to a larger number of forces."

On the other hand, Israeli Environment Minister Gideon Ezra, who is also a member at the security cabinet, told army radio that "all those involved in rocket fire, including Hamas's former Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniya, must be eliminated."

At least 65 Palestinians, including 17 children, have been martyred since Wednesday, Palestinian medical officials said.

Dozens die in Israel-Gaza clashes
Palestinian health workers wheel a wounded Palestinian to a hospital in Beit Lahia.
There is no sign the fighting is abating
At least 46 Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers have been killed in one of the deadliest days of fighting in Gaza since troops withdrew in 2005.

Medical staff said at least eight were children and up to 16 were militants. Israel said most were militants. Seven Israeli troops were lightly injured.

Israel says it wants to stop rocket attacks from Gaza, but about 50 hit Israel on Saturday, injuring five.

The Palestinian leader has demanded urgent UN Security Council talks.

Mahmoud Abbas said the Israeli raids were "more than a holocaust".

He was apparently alluding to controversial remarks made on Friday by Israel's Deputy Defence Minister Matan Vilnai, who said Palestinians risked a "shoah" - the Hebrew word for a big disaster as well as for the Nazi Holocaust.

Mr Vilnai's colleagues insisted he had not meant "genocide".

Khaled Meshaal, Hamas' exiled leader in Syria, went further, calling Israel's actions "the real Holocaust".

Civilian deaths

Israel has said it may launch a full-scale attack on Gaza in response to militant rocket attacks.

The BBC's Katya Adler in Jerusalem says Israel's leaders have been under pressure from some quarters to launch a ground invasion.

However, a recent opinion poll has indicated a majority of Israelis favour a truce with the Islamist movement Hamas, which controls Gaza.

Israeli government spokesman David Baker said "Israel is compelled to take the proper steps to bring an end to these rocket onslaughts" on about 200,000 Israelis living alongside Gaza's border.

Tanks and troops have made an incursion into northern Gaza, encountering resistance from Palestinian militants, as Israeli planes made several air raids.

On one occasion, a house east of the Jabaliya refugee camp was struck - two children, a brother and sister, were killed.

Israel says it wants to end the agony caused by militant rockets
Later, a 15-year-old girl and her 16-year-old sister were also killed.

In another attack, a mother was killed as she was preparing breakfast for her children, medical workers said.

"We are in the middle of a total war. We hear the rockets and the explosions everywhere... we cannot leave our homes," a Jabaliya resident, Abu Alaa, told the AFP news agency.

"They're shooting at everything that moves."

There was also fighting in and around the camp between Israeli troops backed by tanks and Palestinian militants equipped with crude rockets and mortars.

Map
Israel says its aim is to stop Palestinian militants firing rockets across the border.

On Wednesday a rocket fired by Hamas militants killed an Israeli student in the southern town of Sderot, the first such death in nine months.

Palestinian militant leaders say they are responding to Israeli attacks.

More than 70 Palestinians have been killed in the violence since Wednesday.

Dear Friends,

I had a long day, an awful day, taking photos and writing from on the ground in Gaza City and northern Gaza. I met with two children who survived Wednesdays Jabalyia soccer bombing: the other 4 kids were, as you likely know, killed. One of the children I saw had no flesh on their legs, had burns all over their bodies from the tanks shelling. This was one of the scariest things I have seen yet, and I have seen a lot more than that.

I asked one boy to give me details of what happened that Thursday afternoon. The 9 year old boy cried while he told that hed seen the decapitated head of his cousin strewn far from his body, arms and legs, far away from where they were all playing soccer. His mother added that there wasnt any electricity when her son was admitted to the hospital.

He was crying as he told the story, his tears hurting him even more than his psychological pain, as he has burns in his eyes. His mother uncovered his wounded leg where I could only see bones without flesh in places. I could not understand how he managed to lay down conscious, but knew it was a consciousness full of pain and anguish. I felt this pain in my own heart and head.

As I talked this childs mother, she said that shed had to evacuate her children, as its no longer safe to be in that area where the children had been playing. The kids ranged from 6 to 14 years old. The two ones who survived said they had all been playing soccer in front of the door of their house in Jabalyia when the Israeli missile hit them.

I finally came back home some hours ago, after waiting a long time to find transportation. But, eventually managing to make it back to Rafah, I collapsed for a nap for an hour. My sleep was disrupted: I awoke scared by the bombing of F-16s (I learned later on). I ran from my bed through our dark house, and seeing no one from my family inside, I ran without shoes into the street. People were out in the street, young men running. I didnt understand, didnt know what I was doing other than that I was running but didnt know to where. Most peoples windows were down, shutters closed, as it is freezing cold at moment.

I was glad not to be injured by shattered glass and debris on the streets. I made it back home to write this on my laptop. But Ive decided going back to sleep is not a good idea, no matter how exhausted I am. If I have to die (not my wish) , I want to be awake, so I know Im dying, and by whom. Not asleep.

To be honest all it would take is about 12 helicopters doing boarder patrol with flir to secure the border gap between Israel (won in war Palestine) and New Palestine. You are probably right.

You could say the same about Britain and America too.

I live in Britain. Do you think that the brainwashed populations of Israel, Britain, America are REALLY to blame ? It's the MANIPULATORS to blame.

I absolutely detest what the state of Israel/Britain/America are doing to the Palestinians/Iraq etc but their armies are acting on direct orders of "the powers that be" (not the puppet governments) and it is THEM to blame (the powers that be) and not THE Israelis. Anyone who says that it is THE Israelis who are to blame are very possibily playing the "divide and conquer" game IMO.

As soon as the populations wake up to HOW they are being manipulated and WHY, then there are gonna be some REAL changes in this world. The manipulators are being found out every minute BIG-TIME and they WILL be stopped I do NOT doubt that but I hope it is sooner rather than later for the sake of the innocent children who are being murdered EVERY day

The whole idea of war is idiotic to me. What I hate is how when Israel retaliates-everyone shits their pants and goes in rage, while my tax dollars are used for "Palestinian aid" e.g. weapons for terrorist groups, or "freedom fighters" as they're commonly referred to in these circles, to kill innocent Israelis who would love more than anything to give the house next door to a Palestinian. People are soooooooo one-sided it's not even funny. The sword cuts both ways. I'm not Israel's biggest fan, to say the least lol, but it's only the military-industrial transnational folk who profit from the dead while we argue about it.

Oh, one more thing... BBC is shit. :) I do like TopGear though...

Yup, I agree that people should wake up,and you're right - there's a change happening..you can almost feel it can't you? It's like a collective whisper and more and more people are hearing and joining in. Unfortunately, that isn't gonna help any Palestinians tonight or tomorrow or next week or next month.

Israels SUPPOSED "retaliation" (as is often "reported" by the mainstream media) is probably a retaliation to "false flag operations" or probably out and out attack by the Israel Army/air force and not a retaliation at all. As I said before, it's the MANIPULATORS at the very top that have to be exposed and their tactics in order to wake the Israeli population up.

I recall seeing a doco last year that covered the Palestinian occupation. In it many human rights activists explained how the MSM always claimed that Israel "retalliated" or "counter attacked" against the militias when in fact it was the other way around ie Israel did the original attacks and compelled the resistance to retialliate. They expalined how PR handled by the Israeli govt is immediately on the case and supplies the MSM International with "what they need".

After I saw this, I have seen it being portrayed everytime I see any MSM news on Palestine-Israel conflict. When you are awake to it, it makes you sick.

There was a study undertaken by Glasgow University (they bought a book out detailing its conclusions called 'Bad News for Israel') which illustrated how in Britian and America the msm generally doesn't give a background of the history of the conflict in its reports, which ensured thatthe reports gave a false impression that Palestinians were the agressors and occupiers whilst the Israelis were the occupied and victims.
