IF YOU think you are being by bombarded by advertising now, just wait. A new form of spruiking could be coming to your lounge room soon.

Energy companies want to use the State Government's electricity "smart meters" — designed to cut power bills by providing price and consumption information — to send advertising to homes.

The Government has ruled that the new meter boxes must be able to communicate with in-house display units to show householders how much electricity they are using at any time and how much they are paying for it. The information is designed to encourage people to cut back on power use and run energy-hungry appliances such as dishwashers off-peak when tariffs are lower.

Although the display units themselves are not compulsory, The Age understands that power companies are investigating ways to exploit the technology to recover costs. In addition to advertising, a range of other services could be piggybacked on the meters, including sophisticated networks to automatically manage household appliances and even security monitoring.

The Government will begin installing around 2.4 million meters at the end of this year.

The technology, which will replace all mechanical meters by 2011, will also allow energy companies to gather information on the habits of individual households and local areas.

Energy Minister Peter Batchelor suggested that power companies that provided the displays would be free to advertise and offer other services if they complied with marketing laws.

"Technology for in-home displays and other devices will continue to evolve rapidly," Mr Batchelor said.

A spokesman for the Choice consumer group, Christopher Zinn, said real-time information on energy consumption and costs would help householders cut energy bills.

But he said household information must not be misused by retailers, nor should households be forced to receive unsolicited electronic advertising material.

"The important thing is that the consumer has got to have trust that (power suppliers) are not some sort of Big Brother poking around getting information on what you use and when you use it that can be passed on."

Kate Shea, a spokeswoman for TRUenergy, confirmed that the company was exploring using the meters to supply new services and products.

Sounds well dodgy. I bet it will be a two way monitoring device. It's crazy.

You bet..

They might get a shock if they use two way monitoring in my lounge:eek:

Thanks Montag, I would have missed this otherwise.

Next we'll be doing our daily activities by candle light!!! Back to the dark ages.
They don't mention anything in the article about putting these crap inventions in businesses. Oh no we can't have that!
Just wait for them to get on the "nuclear is good" bandwagon again. : (

"you are curently using enough power to charge 3 400w sodium bulbs please sit tight and wait for the pigs" lmao

somethings not right

Sounds like Noel's house party where they used to fit camera's in the houses so they could be captured while the show was running. Not a very nice experience if you was doing something that you wouldn't want anyone else seeing.:D:D:D Oh crumbs they are coming to fit our new meter on 10th March eek.

As long as we are connected to the National Grid, we will be dependent on "the powers that be" to provide us with the power for our lighting etc.

IMO we have to work towards ways of being self sufficient and to possibily opt out of the National Grid.

If you look at what is "reported" on the mainstream media, you will see that they NEVER MENTION each individual house having it's own solar panels, wind turbines and other "renewable" energy sources - That is the LAST thing they want us to do or for us to even consider.

Notice that 12v car batteries are not compatible with ANYTHING at all that is in your house. This is by design. For example, if there was a power cut (electric) and and I wanted to use my GAS central heating with a 12v car battery it wouldnt be possible without some major messing about.

You could attach an inverter to a car battery and power SOME electrical items but not others UNLESS you purchased a VERY expensive inverter. They are only expensive because they dont want us to own these things. Thank god for China who dont stick to the rules and manufacture and distribute stuff that TPTB in this country always made SURE we could never get. For example LED lights cost about £10 EACH but are actually very cheap to manufacture and use VERY little power. I have ordered some of these bulbs but at £10 each are quite expensive. I will be running them off 12v batteries.

The global warming scam is DEFINITELY a scam cos otherwise they WOULD consider each individual household having it's own system for free energy. In the mainstream media they sometimes talk about those big wind turbines, which I personally think are brilliant, but they always say (lie) on the news that people dont want them cos they are an eye sore. Having said that those wind tubines are connected to the National Grid which we have got to get away from IMO

Well i kinda think that the wind turbines are an eyesore, when i lived in the countryside i used to have a clear view of rolling hills until they put up 15 turbines, it wouldnt be so bad if they painted them green though, you soon get used to them, loads better than looking at a nuclear power station!

I can't see these meters saving any electricity at all. In fact, the opposite - what do these always on electronic devices with their nice LCD displays run on - air???

Those people too ignorant to understand that they use more electricity when the washing machine is on won't be able to make any use from it.

Of course, as we all know, California is already starting to install smart thermostats so the goverment can control their air-conditioning at times of need. hmmmmm! One step at a time eh?

Another gross invasion of our privacy....and a sick joke too when you consider MEG generators (which provide free energy for a life-time) were developed decades ago, but kept tightly within the black programs - as are many other free energy devices - to keep us all dependant on the 'grid'.

Meh!
