MORE KNIFE CRIMES IN TODAYS NEWS

Murder inquiry after youth killed (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7253896.stm)
A murder inquiry has begun after a boy was stabbed to death, becoming the fifth teenager to be killed in London this year.

The 16-year-old was found with fatal stab wounds in Invermore Place, Woolwich, south-east London on Tuesday.

Officers were called to the scene on Tuesday at 1615 GMT. It is thought the victim was involved in a row with a group before he died.

Police said they had an open mind about a motive for the killing.

It is normally quite good around here, this is the worst we've had around this area
Paul Whisker, resident

A Met spokeswoman said: "At this early stage it is believed the male may have been in an altercation with a group of black males prior to receiving his injuries."

Paul Whisker, who called the emergency services, said he had found the boy bleeding heavily when he was on his way home.

He said he had tried to stem the bleeding, along with another member of the public, before the emergency services arrived.

The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

'Deadly' area

Witnesses spoke of how they saw up to four youths running from the scene after the attack.

Other residents said the estate was "deadly" and there had been a series of serious incidents in recent weeks.

But Mr Whisker, who has lived in the are for 19 years, added: "It is normally quite good around here, this is the worst we've had around this area."

A large area has been cordoned off around the scene, between Invermore Place and Villas Road, with forensic examiners working in a tent erected over where the boy died.

A post-mortem examination of the victim's body is yet to be carried out.

Killer flees from security guards (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/tayside_and_central/7253728.stm)
George McGeoch
McGeoch was jailed for life in Inverness in April 1999
An "extremely dangerous" prisoner is on the run after threatening security guards while being treated in hospital.

George McGeoch, who was serving a life sentence for offences including murder and abduction, had been attending a planned appointment at Perth Infirmary.

The 36-year-old, originally from the Glasgow area, absconded from two members of escort staff and made off on foot at about 1530 GMT.

A police spokesman said McGeoch should not be approached.

Police officers are carrying out door to door enquiries in Perth and are studying CCTV footage, as well as monitoring various roads in and out of the city and bus and rail stations.

McGeoch is described as 5ft 9ins, stocky, with very short ginger hair and a ginger Mexican-style moustache.

At the time he was wearing a light t-shirt and dark jogging bottoms.

It is believed McGeoch had recently been moved from Perth prison to HMP Dumfries.

McGeoch was sentenced to life at the High Court in Inverness in April 1999 for the murder of Eric Innes, a 61-year-old bakery worker, by slashing his throat and trying to burn his body.

In 2002 he took took two nurses hostage in his cell at Saughton Prison during a five-hour siege.

Private security firm Reliance is responsible for Scotland's prison escort service.

Knife offenders spared prison (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=516565&in_page_id=1770)despite government promises to tackle crime

Five out of six criminals caught with a knife last year were spared a prison sentence.

Despite government promises to tackle knife crime, only 995 of the 6,320 offenders convicted of carrying a blade in a public place were given a custodial sentence, figures from the Ministry of Justice show.

In Humberside, not one of the 123 criminals found guilty of being armed with a knife, sword or other blade was sent to prison.

New figures reveal five out of six knife offenders are spared prison sentences despite a government promise to get tough on criminals. Picture posed by models.

Last week, it was revealed that the number of people admitted to hospital after being stabbed has risen from 3,500 in 1998/99 to 5,500 last year.

It meant 85 per cent of those convicted of the crime - amounting to 5,325 people - were let off prison despite being caught with a potentially fatal weapon.

Yet earlier this month, popular 17-year-old Joe Dinsdale was brutally stabbed to death on an estate in Hull that was plagued by drunken youths.

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said: "These figures betray Gordon Brown's tough rhetoric as yet more spin.

"This staggeringly complacent attitude to knife crime shows that Labour are part of the problem, not the solution."

Last month, Prime Minister Gordon Brown pledged to crack down on rocketing knife crime in England and Wales, insisting he supported "zero tolerance".

In an interview, he said people "deserved freedom from fear about their safety on the streets".

He added: "It is completely unacceptable to carry a knife or a gun.

"Where police have previously been cautioning people, there now has to be a presumption of prosecution."

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith also said judges and magistrates would be instructed to hand out tougher sentences for carrying blades under plans to tackle a wave of stabbings.

She wants the courts to ensure they reflect the seriousness of knife offences when passing sentence.

Ministers responded to public concerns last year by doubling the maximum sentence for possessing a blade to four years in prison.

But official figures revealed recently that in 2006, the latest year figures are available, only one of the 6,320 offenders convicted of having a blade in public received the two-year sentence available at the time.

Furthermore, only 25 others received more than a year in jail.

The average custodial sentence was less than three-and-a-half months.

Ministers acted amid grave concerns about an increase in the use of knives.

Blades were linked to 258 deaths in 2006-07 - up from 219 in 2005-06.

Earlier this week, ministers unveiled plans to give police portable airport-style metal detectors in a bid to stop people wielding knives.

But ministers were forced to admit only 100 devices will be available - about two for each of the 43 forces in England and Wales.

A senior Whitehall source said: "Tackling knife crime is one of our priorities."

Quester, do you think the media are sensationalising knife-crime a little bit?

Just for the record, the plan is to make out that knife crime is SO bad in the UK that we should be comfortable going through metal detectors and security wherever we go in Britain. Shops, stations, airports, any public place. That's the agenda, to track trace and monitor everything we do, and this blatant sensationalism over knives is helping ensure that the people demand a solution. Knives are good for the PTB as anyone can get hold of them, thus making the "threat" more severe. In truth it is a few isolated incidents blown up out of all proportion and I hate to say this dude, but you are adding to that hype by posting all this bullshit.

Well if you have got nothing to hide, then theres nothing to fear <--- FUCKING WANKERS!!
