Hey I'm wondering how much vitamin D to take during the cold winter months. After searching the internet I have read multiple amounts to take daily from 1000IU up to 4000IU which I think isn't factoring in cold winter weather. Also if you take too much will you just pass it through urine like vitamin C? Any help is appreciated, thanks.

You don't piss it out, you store it in the liver, I believe. It's not one of the water-soluble vitamins. It's fat-soluble.
It's actually a hormone. There's a lot we don't understand about it.
Here is a book by a guy who took up to 100,000 IU's a day. He mentions a study with pregnant women who were taking that much.
Amazon.com: THE MIRACULOUS RESULTS OF EXTREMELY HIGH DOSES OF THE SUNSHINE HORMONE VITAMIN D3 MY EXPERIMENT WITH HUGE DOSES OF D3 FROM 25,000 to 50,000 to 100,000 IU A Day OVER A 1 YEAR PERIOD eBook: Jeff T Bowles: Books@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/4171pjfY7TL.@@AMEPARAM@@4171pjfY7TL
Anyway, the guy thinks that vitamin D deficiency is basically the cause of all major disease because we don't live by the equator anymore.
It is true that we can't really get a lot of vitamin D without the Sun, unless you eat a lot of oysters, or TONS of fish.

I would really worry more about vitamin A when high dosing D3, and i wouldnt go much higher than 5000 IU, less if you live somewhere sunny. 100,00 IU is not recommended by any credible source ive come across, its a huge pharmacologic dose that much will likely induce Vitamin A deficiency if constantly taken.
I would go for a 2-2.5 ratio of A : D and 1mg K2.
Thorne Research do a supplement that is 5000 IU of D3 and 1mg K2 per 10 drops. Its quite a reasonable price and you can get it from iHerb.com. 150g lamb or beef liver twice a week will give adequate A. The A must come from pre-formed Retinol. B-carotene doesnt really do the job properly. I wouldnt worry too much about the ratios though as long as you are getting plenty of all 3, within the limits of what you could realistically get from food/sun. Remember that folks at the equator have black skin to prevent too much D being made, so supplement wisely.
Vitamin K1 - you will get plenty by eating well cooked (boiled) greens with butter or coconut oil once or twice a week. K1 doesnt affect absorption or utliisation of the others afaik.

Yes may get some extra vitamin a. I take a multi vitamin with a in. From the research from the vitamin d council website the only cases known of people becomming toxic from vitamin d is when they go over 40,000 iu.

have a read of those articles, Chris Masterjohn has done some good research on the literature regarding the interplay between fat soluble vitamins.
