The Long Count

I'm hearing an awful lot about December the 21st 2012 as being a key date when i'm doing research on all this stuff. Based on the Mayan Calendar and this was their 'Long Count' version.

My understanding is that we have kinda decoded their calendar and it has given us this date as the end of their long count. The question is, how can we be so sure that we are correct with this date? How do we know when exactly the mayan calendar was written? I don't know a lot about the different calendars we ourselves used in those days, how they tie in with our calendar now if different and how we can tie either of those in with the mayan calendar.

Furthermore, how do we know if we decoded the images correctly?

If anyone have any ideas or could give me some clarification on any of the above it would be greatly appreciated.

for me this date is a gregorien date (or haab-ien)
i would be very carfull of this date (perso)
after all it was the longnecks (the catholics) that gave us this piece of shite (the gregorien calendar)

me perso j'adore the work of José Argüelles for the kins and tonalitys (the Tzolkin)
and i follow Carl Callermans interpritation of the long count the TUN...
with its end date callculation for the 28th october 2011.....

but then again whats 420 days over a 16.4 billon years

for me most of Ian's works resonate with my Ku
he worked principaly with Carl Callerman and the Elders on the TUN.... interesting how each of them Ian and José have there different interpritations and how people get in there heads about defending one or the other, i feel that both have brought out into the world some very important information that compliment each other, remember 'A'ohe pau ka 'ike i ka halau ho'okahi (All knolage is not taught in the same school)
(by the way tru3 you never check your mail on hunatrainer..? happy hollidays my freind...)

getting back to the thread, the longnecks brought the gregorien time with the bible and they had to kill alot of people to get it accepted....
