Hi everyone,
I thought I would relay a little something that happen to my 10 year old son the other day.
In class as kids do, a fellow peer of my son made a rather insulting remark aimed directly at my son. He retorted in defence at the perpetrator with an equally insulting verbal answer to which he was then given a good telling off by the teacher. Now before I go any further I must make clear that I have no problem with my son being punished at school if he does wrong I expect him to be punished and I have told the school such.
Anyway carrying on, hoping that I'm not boring anyone too much, my son being annoyed a little at being given a telling off for defending himself proceeded to ask the teacher "what happened to my freedom of speech"? (just like his Father :D )
This didn't go down too well with his teacher and subsequently he was made to stay in at break time and write down a large amount of literature copied from a poster on the subject of 'rights and conduct'.
Now the part I find a tad disturbing is as follows, On completion of my son's punishment he was told by the deputy head, - "maybe next time you decide to use your freedom of speech you'll think twice"
Sums up the UK's Orwellian society rather well I think.

Aye it does sum up our Orwellian society. To quote a very muched used phrase these days. "PC gone mad". but thing about PC is, it was very politcal but it was never correct.

LOL. What a Nazi teacher. It's important to understand that people behaving like that are THEMSELVES pushed down by something.
As Bruce Lipton said, today, the way people reach power is by PUSHING OTHER PEOPLE DOWN!

G'day truebastard,
Please tell the school that they no longer have the right to punish your child. If they have an issue they can tell you about it and it would be your judgement that gives out any punishment. I was personally on the end of some teachers personal vendettas at school. My father always said that I must have deserved it and that was the end of that. This is not always the case. Sometimes the teacher is (to use an English saying) 'bang out of order' and the child is fully justified in feeling victimised. While there are many kind and loving teachers, there are also some that appear to take enjoyment out of 'putting kids in their place' by whatever means they deem necessary.
You have the right to do as you will, in no way am I telling you what to do, but please, please, please, tell the school to stop any and all punishments until they have spoken to you so that you can make your judgement as a loving parent deserves the right to do.
With LOVE.

Hi TB. What happened to the tosser who insulted your son in the first place? F*** all I expect. Just another tosser who gets away with it. And for the deputy head, he sounds like a wanker. Maybe the D.H. slipping that lad's mother one. The tosser knows about it, so thinks he can get away with any thing.

Hi Bumble,
The school has a non-retaliation policy, kids are not allowed to defend themselves, they are only allowed to report any problems to a teacher. So yes, the little tosser did get away with it as usual, and my son gets punished for breaching school policy.
I teach my son to defend himself when needed and to think things through for himself and not just except everything his told as gospel, the school seem to find free thinkers difficult to handle, something to do with resisting suppression I suppose ;)

schools today are mind-processing plants, including university, imv.
the one mental skill that is absolutly required in adulthood is never taught: critical thinking.

I sense this teacher and her supervisors participated to defame and ridicule your child. This is a serious violation of student and teacher privilege and must be dealt with accordingly. I would file a lawsuit that these educator's do not have time to educate, but rather discipline students for nothing more than childhood antics such as name calling. This should be channeled and fomented by local media, is this a private or public school? If public the school must behave in the manner which it is paid for that means discipline on both students without ridicule or to defame any student through their actions..

I think Teachers need to be more up front and honest....
now IMO the teacher should have said.... "you can have all the free speech you like, but we do not allow people to speak to each other like that in our school, and this is why you have been told off", then your kid would have understood more, all be it been annoyed the other kids comments where over looked...... if he then went on about it you could understand them getting arsy...
but there is no reason the teacher could not have explained that, after all its very relevant today...
As for the teacher saying "maybe you will think about that next time you use your free speech", thats just stupid.... again this would have been far more mature " there is nothing at all wrong with free speech, but we have rules in this school and we don't like kinds being rude to each other and must respect this" .... but instead the teacher came across totally consumed by whats going on around in the world....
to be honest half the teachers nowadays have not been educated about the real world so how can they teach kids..??
I think parents have got to do their best to educate them that although school is important it is also full of shit.... and you got to try and show them what parts to take in and what parts not to.... that being said some kids at school and little shits and I can imaging in can be night mare (not saying your kid is).... its a tough one...

I agree with you thirdwave, what you mention would have been a better way of dealing with the situation. This school is now run by heavy duty Christians who can't see past the bible and into the real world. I try to teach my son to look at situations from all angles first and then draw his own conclusions. I'm sure if my son logged on to David's website at school, I would have social workers knocking my door.
In today's messed up UK, the school in question no longer punishes the violent/out of control kids, instead they reward them with burgers from Mac D's when they go a week without kicking the shit out of someone

that whole episode is so unbelievable, but, almost insidious, the message being, use you freedom of speech, get punished.
i grew up in apartheid south africa, where you had freedom of speech, as long as it toted the white christian line, i began questioning apartheid and how it fit in with the christian mantra of 'treat your neighbour as you would yourself' with the way our black neighbours were treated. this got me 3 years of personalised 're-education' in the form of meetings with the school guidance counsellor twice a week.
but tbh, i actually thank my narrow minded teachers, i remember speaking in class one day about deserts (we had to do a project on different climate areas) and i said the deserts are growing everyday, and she told me that i was lying, i still remember it like yesterday, i said i wasn't, she said i was and it went back and forth like that, eventually i was sent to the prinicipals office, and it was on that little walk down the corridor that i realised that teachers and grown ups don't know everything, and in a little way, i changed that day.
so truebastard, if your son is anything like me, he'll learn from that experience, i hope he does.
