Over the last three days I've seen military helicopters flying over Oxford. they're always travelling straight and at high speed and altitude, as if on the way to getting somewhere. They're always going in a south to north direction. Does anyone know why this might be?

As we can see here: http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/shows/showdate.htm there are no air shows being held in this country for nearly a month. I've seen unusual aircraft activity before air shows, but it's usually only a few days beforhand and it's always many different types of plane. In this case all the hellicopters have been the same and I'm pretty sure they're these ones: http://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/eh101/

There was something on the news the other week about new high level training operations about to take place, for the purpose of getting pilots in a ready state before being stationed in iraq and afghanistan, I suspect that this is what you are witnessing, just large scale training operations. The fact that it was broadcast on the news seems to suggest to me that the M.O.D forseen that this might cause alarm and released the info to the media, or maybe that is a red herring to divert attention away from what they are really up to.

That's probably it. Another went over at about 8PM yesterday evening; that must make a couple of dozen over the last threee days.

The EH101 is not designed to fly long distances, but it can be loaded aboard transport planes like the c130 Hercules and flown anywhere in the world. My friend and fellow researcher Ellis C Taylor has pointed out that they are heading in the right direction for RAF Brize Norton. That fits if they're part of the growing push against Iran.
