Labour Friends of Israel was searching for a new chairman this week after hedge-fund manager Gilad Hayeem stepped down from the post following the sale of his firm Marble Bar Asset Management to a Swiss bank.

Mr Hayeem announced he was leaving LFI on the same day that the deal with the bank, EFG International, was concluded.

Five hedge-fund managers including Mr Hayeem and his business partner Hilton Nathanson — a donor to a range of Jewish charities — were to share a $400 million windfall, said the Financial Times.

An LFI spokesman said that Mr Hayeem, who took over the chairmanship of the organisation from Labour Party fundraising chief Jon Mendelsohn less than a year ago, had decided to leave in order to concentrate on his “expanded business interests”.

The departure of Londoner Mr Hayeem — who donated £5,000 to the bid by Hilary Benn to become Labour leader — put further pressure on LFI leaders, who were unwittingly brought into the picture during the controversy about donations to the party by its former treasurer, David Abrahams.

The resulting furore also sparked questions about the role of Mr Mendelsohn in the affair.

LFI director Luciana Berger said that rumours that the organisation was in trouble were untrue.

“We are as active as ever and we are in the process of choosing a new chairman,” she told the JC this week.

Meanwhile, it emerged this week that Peter Hain failed to reveal a £5,000 donation to his leadership campaign by Mr Mendelsohn.
