Hi, I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy at the start of last year and have found it a constant struggle to maintain. I know what I can and cant eat and avoid gluten at all costs, but sometimes it feels like its sneaked back in somehow. The illness manifests itself in me as a really severe skin rash. Ive always had exzema but this isnt that, its alot deeper under the skin and kinda moist and raw. Are there any herbs or natural cures/preventative measures I can take, I was hoping someone would have a cure for this by now but cant find one anwhere. I read the other day that basil is a good antihistamine so have been munching that like a madman but any other help you might have would be invaluable, im reaching the end of my tether with this :)
thanks

Do you take enzymes to help break the food down? Sometimes all it is, is the body unable to break down all the peptides and gluten proteins. They're not expensive at all.
Trienza is a very good broad based enzyme.

Is your rash Dermatitis Herpetiformis?.....Have you had a skin biopsy?

it is Dermatitis yes, an ive not had a skin biopsy, gps have been pretty shit about it tbh, so i went to a homeopath, who told me to avoid wheat sugar an dairy an we gradually worked out it was gluten. Ive not tried enzymes either, ill have a look into it now, thanks

It sounds to me as if you have DH..... as this is how a gluten intolerance can manifest in the skin. You will have to have a skin biopsy for a diagnosis. :)

The rash has a good chance of healing if you stick to a strict no gluten diet....failing this there is an antibiotic cream "Dapsone".which is highly effective but is very strong and has side effects.... it is i think, also used for leprosy, so not something to be mssed with.
Have you actually been tested for Coeliac disease? If not you should ask your gp for a blood test. If this is positve they will want to do an intestinal biopsy. DH is also seen in Thyroid patients but i think it is not so common.
Does the rash blister / which body parts is the rash on?

Contact the coeliac disease association of whatever country you're from and they'll send you a list of products you can eat safely.

Ask for these in a TCM shop (if you have one near you), or try online.
Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui)
Radix Paeoniae Rubra (Red Peony Root/Chi Shao)
Fructus Kochiae (Di Fu Zi)
Fructus Forsythiae (Lian Qiao)
Cortex Cercis Chinensis (Zi Jing Pi)
Radix Lithospermi Seu Arnebiae (Zi Cao)
Flos Lonicerae (Jin Yin Hua/Honeysuckle Flower)
Spina Gleditsiae Sinensis (Zao Jiao Ci)
You may be able to buy them all in 1(tablet form). In which case ask/look for Pi Fu Bing Xue Du Wan. It pretty much completely got rid of my eczema. Also, try Bee Pollen and as much raw food as possible.
Good luck :)

its all over my back, my arms, my neck, backs of my knees, when it gets really bad it moves onto my face, eyelids, crotch and hands, can be quite a problem, when u cut yourself scratching then rip the scabs open everytime u try and move or reach up to get something. Ive used antibiotics in the past an they sort it out quicktime, but I know theyre really bad an just suppress your body's natural responses so dont wanna continue, same with the steroid creams. Nature must have a herb or something somewhere thatll right this, im convinced

I think you really need to know exactly what it is before trying to tackle it. Ask your gp for a blood test and a referal to a dermatologist. "Insist" if needs be.
If it is DH only a gluten free diet will help.
Even the tiniest amount of gluten will make you flare up.

I'v always wondered if Gluten Intollerance is related to white flour.....
does Wholewheat have the same effect?
Also, what, if any processed foods do you eat?

Yes a celiac is an intolerance to rye, wheat, barely, and oats. I also have celiac disease.

great post best one ive seen on this thread:D i have found that only the raw natural herbs and such can truly eradicate it, whereas the prescribed pharmiceutishits only make it look like its gone for a short while.

I am not a doctor but sounds like you need to have more tests done to confirm the diagnosis.

Eliminating glutten isn't that hard if you have substitutes on hand, corn chips instead of crackers, spinach pasta instead of wheat pasta, corn tortias instead of flour ones, oat meal instead of cerial with wheat, lots of fruit. Just be sure you have stuff to satify what you want to eat without eating the stuff you aren't supposed to have.

I think I might have a gluten intolerance too. I don't get rashes or anything, but I get extremely fatigued where I can hardly do anything. I limited the amount of gluten I eat to about 5% of what I used to, felt great. Then I 'forgot' and had a load of pizza a couple of times during exam week when I was too busy studying to cook. Oops. Total breakdown, probably failed my exam due to the dreaded gluten!

Despite being on a strict diet are you taking any tablets/capsules or other medicines that contain Gluten, it is often used as a binder in tablets/capsules and could be a source.

just wanted to add that if you are considering taking enzymes, make damn sure you don't accidentally get some gluten. the enzymes just make it more available to your body and doubles your reaction.
